High Sierra freeze

What you have just explained doesn't sound like a normal or stable behavior of a system. Imagine if you had to take your computer at work and at home every day and connect it to external monitors. This would have been a big problem. I would still call apple and request a repair

If the freeze does not happen immediate, most likely the problem has to do with some applications you are using.

3. Start with your own account without any Apps loaded at Startup.

Login with your own credentials and go to System Preferences -> Users & Groups. Choose the tab 'Login Items' and remove all items that are listed there (write them down so you can re-enter them later). Restart and login with your own credentials. Now test your system. First do nothing and see if you get a freeze. If not try an app, test it for a freeze. Most likely you don't have any or you get one using a specific app. At that time you know the problem.

4. Re-enter the login items.
If your system is still stable after performing all the steps above, you can try to re-enter the login items (System Prefs -> Users & Groups).

I hope this will help to track down the real problem.

I have found several apps that cause problems (my list is very limited because I am still testing). Please note the apps below does not necessarily cause a freeze.
- MySqlWorkbench, the latest versions will not, try version 6.1 instead.
- Microsoft Office, Excel decimal point settings are not recognized anymore.

I did not have time yet to test the possible freeze, because I need to finish another task and can not have a freeze now. When I have time I will update with a list of freeze-causing-apps.

For now my uptime is :

I certainly think your theory has more credibility than the Chrome theory - since the freezes happen even when chrome is not running.

Even so, shouldn't disabling the "Automatic Graphics Switching" in the "Energy Saver" preferences do something? may be not - if the problem is with the high-performance graphics driver.

Have you tried the gfxCardStatus app (free on the net) that forces the graphics mode to be 'integrated only'? I could not get that setting to work with the newer versions of the MacOS.

That sounds encouraging. I just also did a clean install of High Sierra. I first used the diskutil command line utility to clean and reformat my SSD drive. Then I reinstalled the OS. Time will tell if the issue is gone or not.

I have no idea why, when I rebooted after 6 hours, it was back to normal. Regardless, I took that opportunity and I did as someone suggested and went to Mac HD > Library > Extensions. [not the user Library]

Not seeing any of the specific ".kext" files others mentioned, I deleted any .kext file older than 2017.

Not only is it a bit "snappier", booting quicker, but my Siri is healthy again (...and the villagers rejoiced. Apple never did reply). Previously, it errored the 2nd time it was accessed, often not working at all. This was a standard failure for the past several weeks.

My friends (not developers, no beta) started having the same issue (freezing on boot-up) yesterday. I'll try a Time Machine restore from 3 days ago (last known good boot date). If successful, I'll delete all old kext files using Finder.

I'm wondering if too many Time Machine and Migration Assistants from the past (in Apple years that's 5 years when they stop caring) results in old conflicting files are never discarded when OS X is updated.

If not, I'll use the suggestion of command-R and Terminal to delete the older kext files to see what happens. I'm far from knowing UNIX, but I think I can do a few safe commands. I'll report back with the results.

I miss Steve's attention to detail, too.

Its not help. i tried to scan virus, optimized the system, clean all the files and even reinstall new system still freezing. Its always hang every click or when i open the file.

There are currently around 540 posts on this issue spanning 36 pages and 1222 people having the same issue and not one mention of a fix by Apple. Gone are the days (of Steve Jobs) when issues like this were treated seriously. This issue is serious enough for people to consider moving aways from Apple, although I consider that out of the pan into the fire. Apple have lost focus on their users and are fair too interested in the App Store, Music, TV and making as much money as they can. There has been little in innovation from them in the past 10 years with most features just keeping up with the competition. We all need to post a product feedback here Product Feedback - Apple and start putting pressure on Apple to fix this issue once and for all.

I am a frustrated owner of 2013 trash--er--Mac Pro with 64GB of memory that froze constantly. Just as was I about to yank this machine from my desk and use it for target practice, I found this program that might help you: Onyx. I know some people might express uneasiness about using third-party software with the self-healing, virus-free Mac; however, I downloaded it this morning and experienced full day without any freezing. I worked on my documents using Microsoft Word with YouTube playing in the background; something almost unheard of a month ago since using these two together guaranteed the rainbow ball or a permanent view of the mountain no profanity, key, click, or shut-down could remove.

I've not lost any information during these freezes so I'm surprised your Mac has been so hard hit. But then again I never use Microsoft Word. I stopped using it when Apple no longer supported it. It was a pain anyway as websites and emails interpreted it as containing code.

I have found a post from Christopher (sorry not to quote your full username but I can't currently find your post) dated 10th January saying to do the following

I have been getting random lockups since High Sierra too. I originally thought it may be related putting the system to sleep every night so I started rebooting before using my computer. I had it happen again this week after detaching a panel in Think or Swim trading platform which is JAVA based. Maybe it is related to JAVA somehow? It has happened before when in an online classroom using Illuminate Blackboard, which again I think is JAVA based. I can move my mouse but I have no access to my keyboard or programs that are running. I do seem to have sound as I was still hearing my instructor when this happened. The only way to resolve this when it happens is a HARD shut down using the power button. I am on a 2013 iMac that has every hardware upgrade that was available when I bought it. I have had issues with past OS upgrades with TIme Machine not running automatically because of an issue when on a UPS battery and the system thinking it was running on battery power when it wasn't. Random lockups like this have never been an issue with my macs before. Apple is getting as bad as Microsoft in breaking things that were working with their upgrades. If you find a fix for this let me know. I hope Apple fixes this issue soon. It seems others are having it as well. It will make me very hesitant in upgrading an OS again. I am still wondering is JAVA is causing these lockup issues.

Absolutely pathetic effort by apple with the latest update - it fixes NOTHING. Random freezes, no matter what you're doing, and yes, all you can do is physically switch off the mac pro using the power button. So, anyone want to buy a completely USELESS £4,000 cylindrical door stop off me?

I am beyond had it with apple at this point. Not getting another penny out of me, ever, and I've spent well over £30k with them over the years.

I don't want to be that guy but, my Mac Pro is now solid - 24/7 uptime at 14 days since 12.4 update, up for a month or more since 12.3. And, before you say 'That's not helpful.', I can confirm that my spec: Mac Pro 6x3.5GHz/2xD500/64GB/1TB/2xDell5K/1xAppleThunderboldDisplay, 'Prevent computer from sleeping':Check. (Actually, all in that section of system prefs checked) it does work, this versions of Mac OS can work reliably and dependably. What's different with your spec? Is it possible you have bad hardware? Corrupt firmware?

...Oh and one other thing I've noticed, I have three-finger swipe enabled for Mission Control and App Exposé - every once in a while I accidentally do a slight swipe - not enough to trigger the function but just enough to disable the keyboard and stop mouse clicks from operating. A firm swipe up/down fixes it.

PS: Apple have been trying to fix my broken iCloud Drive sync since November 2017 so, yeah, I'm not fan of Apple right now either.

Also still has not frozen after all displays are in "Default for display" mode.

Just that with this display mode the mac is unusable as so little fits on screen

Guys, I have bad news.

I just installed OS 10.13.1 beta 5.

The problem is not fixed at all. I send a report to Apple through developers channel...

I cannot believe they missed this issue.
