printer problems HPLaserjet M553

After installing High Sierra update I'm experiencing problems in printing with mail, word, excel, adobe. I've a HP Laserjet Enterprise M553 with IMac late 2013. The following errors appears when printing:

ERROR: Undefinedresult

OFFENDING COMMAND: show

I've already installed firmware printer updates, printer software updates. I've tried with a USB connection and with a LAN connection but the problem is always the same. Any suggestion ?

thanx in advance

iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015), macOS High Sierra (10.13)

Hi Robert (rhfoster34)

There are a couple of workarounds.

1. Install Calibri font into FontBook; you may need to exactly follow the instructions given (see below).
2. Change the default fonts in Word and Excel away from Calibri.

Note that this doesn't solve the problem for PDFs created in 10.13.x.

Re 1, " I downloaded a bunch of MS fonts from Apple StackExchange <https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/128091/where-can-i-find-default-micros oft-fonts-calibri-ca...> and installed Calibri and Cambria, following the instructions there. Restarting the iMac was essential."
see After Update to Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra - Printer M553dn un... - Page 11 - HP Support Forum - 6388132

my message 110. You don't need to install Cambria.

We have the same problem with all High Sierra and HP corporate printers in our networks in line with what above.

As it seems the problems relates to the way TT fonts are sent from OSX to the printer in High Sierra.

We have solved the problem while waiting for Apple/HP to issue an update by modifying the PPD files for that printer as follows:

change line :

from

*TTRasterizer: Type42

to

*TTRasterizer: None

save the file.

then use the web interface of CUPS at http://localhost:630 to modify the printer that is not working

(under the administration menu) to use your newly modified PPD file.

Hi everyone,

I have contact HP they give the following solution:

Go to the printer driver and instal a new printer. Select Airprint instead of the automatic selection.

I know it's a basic mobile driver but it works for me fine. They are working an a new firmware...

Please also notice that when you search for a new firmware on hp.com to select an older version of the mac version. There is the new firmware 3.9! When you select the newest mac version you get the old version...

I hope this well help some people

There is a contribution to After Update to Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra - Printer M553dn un... - Page 16 - HP Support Forum - 6388132 by Code_Red which tells aus there will be HP firmware updates existing or coming in February.

I quote:

01-19-2018 01:20 PM

This issue has been addressed in firmware for various HP printers (more updates to come). When High Sierra was released, Apple changed the way they send certain font values to the printer. This results in the offending command errors.

If your printer is running FutureSmart 4 Firmware, you can upgrade to FS 4.5.3 and the issue is resolved. That covers the following printers: E87660, E77830, E82560, E77660, E72535, E75160.

For remaining printers running FutureSmart 4 Firmware, you will need to upgrade to FS 4.5.4 which will be available in Feb (call HP and request firmware).

If your printer is running FutureSmart 3, you will need to upgrade to the upcoming FS 3.9.1 (Interim firmware release) which will be available in mid-Feb. Again, contact HP and they can provide you the firmware (you may need to request an escalation to L3 support).

Over on the HP board, a work-around has been identified by Prints_William. It involves changing a ppd parameter *TTRasterizer to None. Other contributors have identified possibly better ways of implementing the insight to avoid updates that nullify the change, and also scripted an administrative solution that could target a large numbers of HP printers on a network. See message 205 and subsequent messages at Re: After Update to Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra - Printer M553d... - Page 21 - HP Support Forum - 6388132

I hope it helps some people.
Paul.

This is a major problem - I only have Macs in the house and I can't print a simple spreadsheet from Excel 2011.

Correction: I changed my font from the default of Calibri to Cambria and it worked. I randomly selected Cambria, and haven't tried other fonts.

Nonetheless, Calibri is a great font and it needs to work - it worked before.

Is it possible that the font needs re-installed somehow?

I work in an IT department at a university. We are being plagued by this problem right now, and we don't have much information for our end users.

This started with the release of High Sierra, and this is only affecting HP printers. It affects Office/PDF/browser print jobs, and changing the font doesn't always work. Generic PostScript drivers vs HP drivers make no difference.

The only fix we've found that is 100% is using Generic PCL drivers, but this fix is unacceptable as it restricts to using Black/White/duplex and print quality is terrible.

This is ridiculous.
