iphone 8 poor/sensitive mic during call

Just got a new iPhone 8 (updated to ios 11.0.2) upgraded from iPhone 6. When making a call if not talking directly into the mic the person on the other end cannot hear me (or my voice volume is drastically lower). This occurs when even slightly moving the phone away from my mouth or rotating the phone slightly up or down. My father has the same problem with his iPhone 8, even returned it and got a new one, same problem. Switching to speaker phone solves the problem. Also noting it does not happen all the time and a hard reset can fix it for a bit but then it goes back to the bad behavior.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I found this interesting post on a similar mic issue thread for the iPhone X (thanks to brentwoodkennyg):

I sound muffled or underwater, but only sometimes. Other calls are perfect. Tried all of the fixes in this forum - Network reset, LTE off/on, full reset, wi-fi calls off. Noise cancellation off. With and without cover. Got a replacement phone from the Apple store. None of it helped and now I know why...

The issue turned out to be how I was holding the phone. There are three microphones on the X and one of them is located by the camera on the back of the phone. Even though I didn't cover it while holding the X (with fingers and thumb on the sides of the phone, I apparently was close enough to make that mic behave differently. When I move my phone-holding position in the same grip to the bottom part of the phone, the problems vanish. I have run through a series of test with my "complainers" and this seems to pinpoint the root cause. It's either user error or a design flaw, but there is a simple workaround. Hold the phone at the bottom of the case and definitely not near the top. Problem Solved!

Update as to why this works: Apple has designed noise cancellation into the talking side of the phone. (This is different than the noise cancellation in the Accessibility settings - those are for the listening not speaking). Anyway, there is a small mic on the back of the X by the camera. It's purpose is to listen for ambient noise (think crowded bar) and to cancel that noise from what it hears from the mics on the front at bottom of the phone. Those mics hear your voice talking plus they hear the ambient noise (crowded bar). The software "subtracts" the bar sound from what it hears on the front and the listener never hears the bar noise - just your voice. (You can test this by completely covering the back mic hole with your finger - then the listener hears the bar noise and has trouble hearing your voice).

Anyway, this is a really great feature - except that if you hold the phone near the top, it channels part of your voice into that back mic and it ends up canceling out all or part of your voice. So I have to hold my phone at the bottom and things work fine. This also explains problems with folding phone cases and issues when you are holding the phone between neck and shoulder.

Perhaps you should see my fancy iphone, settings, contacts, Zero mention of any default setting for gmail. Zero option. iphone 8 plus , brand new replacement . If it was there i would use it. All i have is : siri, sort order, display order, short name, my info. Thats all that is visible

If you haven't added your Gmail account and enabled contact syncing, you won't see it. It's apparent that you are unfamiliar with how your iPhone works. This would certainly make it frustrating to use. You should really review the manual:

I did take note of the suggestion to work with the carrier and like this idea, believe it has potential to help me resolve my problem probably at the lowest cost to me; thank you! Only to know, I also got burned on a $2500, late 2016 build, Mac book pro that failed catastrophically to the tune of $650 for repairs, just 70 days past the 1 year warranty thru no fault of my own - the right fan failed and wiped out the logic board. Yep had to pay out of pocket for this, absolutely no consession on apples part - not a happy camper. Especially as my other Mac book pro, a late 2011 build, paid $1199, is still working flawlessly. So the apple product and brand has diminished drastically in the last 5 years or so, when it's time for a new laptop, I'll be buying an $800 PC based throw a way. Not an overpriced, predetermined obsolesce, rotten apple. and to find out that the late 2016 Mac book pro has a glued in battery, sure it can be unglued and removed, but it's a toxic nightmare and the process and chemicals should be banned by the EPA. and ...for strike three, my daughter's iPhone 7 screen locked up and would take no input no matter what, apple "Genius Bar support" a real oxymoron, and phone support was of absolutely no help. Cost us a replacement phone, again, the 7 was a few months out of the 1 year warranty.

my entire family is now thoroughly appalled at these experiences; apple will sell no more of anything in this household period, but it's clear, they could care less!

You are so right. Sorry to hear of the laptop issues. Yes, I just took my 2 year old Mac Book Pro over to a guy to have him see why in the world, after just hitting a restart , the restart bar goes only half way. I do need to update to the latest software but still it was working great until a restart was done. I too agree Apple has fallen far, far from their own tree. Sad , really, Steve Jobs had a great company until he past away. Then it has gone down hill fast! You wait, Apple will do nothing with these issues we are are experiencing. Yea, i refuse to go to an Apple store for help. Genius Bar, yea right... You can probably Google more advice than they give out. Yes, do call your carrier, dont go into a carrier's store front. Over the phone they have way more pull and authority! Work your magic and demand things and you'll get something, trust me on that one! Sad so many faithful Apple customers are having such huge issues with zero fixes...

Same here, we started with Apple when their first iPod came out and have been with them since. Well, I just left Apple for good when it comes to phones, 2 days ago and the new Samsung S9 + is on its way and the new Samsung Galaxy Frontier Gear S3 Smartwatch. I'm totally done with the rotten Apple Co. My wife still likes Apple, but her Iphone 8 + has zero issues. So weird, since i've had 3 replacements in 4 months with zero fixes on each phone. They are probably just recycling these bad phones and giving them all back to us. Should have had more but i was trying to do all the suggestions on this forum with nothing changing....Apple will lose a lot of customers over this. Can you imagine all those customers having these same issues that are not on this forum or even know about it...I've told a lot of people about this forum and to read these posts before they go to the new iphone X. Hope some solutions happen for all those sticking with Apple, but for me, I'm so tired of their BS and terrible customers service. Sure wish Steve Jobs was still around...he was very hard to work with and for but he got things done and customer service was number one to him. Thank Goodness for the Plan B route I can and did take!.

What’s really sad about it, is the fact that my daughter bought two iPhone 7’s because she thought that she was too rough on her phones, and blamed herself for the sound not working properly on both of them, but we never had a clue, that there was a mic problem. Otherwise I would have never taken this gamble and bought an iPhone 8!!! I’m not one to gamble away thousands of dollars so this will be my last iPhone!

The crappy thing about using your speaker the whole time is everyone can hear your call. Yes, it makes it more clear but not private at all !! What a pain to have to use your speaker phone option on a cell phone and or your ear buds. Come on Apple , your fancy nancy phones cant even be used like a normal phone. Flip phones work better for a call. We know you are reading this forum so fix your issues !!

Very nicely written. We need someone like you to fight for us. Same experience I had. Bought an iPhone 8 with Apple Care. The audio was terrible for anyone I called. They couldn’t hear a **** thing! Finally took the Verizon chip out and went back to an old 6s plus. All ok now. I would be petrified of getting a new iPhone now - no matter what new features they add. Because of my bad experience with the IPhone 8, I started watching YouTube videos on iPad Rehab about the technical end of fixing iPhones with Jessa Jones. The story of Apple‘s decline gets even worse as you start to examine the underbelly of Apple. Apple would even put water damaged parts back into an iPhone when repairing it. Many repair people are enraged at Apple‘s poor design. Yet the media barely writes about it. Even Apple Insider isn’t aware how mediocre Apple has gotten. After years with Apple products - I have to admit I am opening my eyes to Samsung. Steve Jobs would roll in his grave if he knew how far his own company has declined.
