iphone 8 poor/sensitive mic during call

Just got a new iPhone 8 (updated to ios 11.0.2) upgraded from iPhone 6. When making a call if not talking directly into the mic the person on the other end cannot hear me (or my voice volume is drastically lower). This occurs when even slightly moving the phone away from my mouth or rotating the phone slightly up or down. My father has the same problem with his iPhone 8, even returned it and got a new one, same problem. Switching to speaker phone solves the problem. Also noting it does not happen all the time and a hard reset can fix it for a bit but then it goes back to the bad behavior.


Has anyone else experienced this?

I have also had this problem, my iPhone 8 has just come back from the apple authorised repair facility.


They inform me that they have performed extensive tests and found nothing wrong. If I find that the problem still exists (it does) then to reset the phone to its factory settings and set it up as a new phone without using a back up. I have not done this yet but plan to do it at the weekend just to see if there is something corrupt in my backup.


My back up has been used on various through the years and I can only assume that the repair facility believe it is corrupted in some way.


Is there anyone who is experiencing this microphone problem that has set up their phone from scratch? (Without using a backup saved in iCloud)

I see the problem that when you calling and the sound not well right? You were sent to the Apple warranties and then it comeback they said Meditate no anything else going wrong. So with my experiences that you should try to change your Wifi internet modem.(Maybe the modem out of date or any mistake) And make sure your data always backup in the icloud storages. Sometime If the icloud full you can be able delete them to free your storages coz everything you saved there it were recognize and remember. Dont worry.!! (SIS- intelligence)The icloud should not be too full with warning system annoying. Because These action status sometimes affectted to the data sound voice call or your Media sound also.

There are many of us with this problem. It’s nig the WiFi or router- it’s the phone itself. The microphone cuts out- unless you hold the phone perfectly still and shout it sounds muffled to person on other end. You can reset the phone, exchange it, bring it to Apple store, change settings etc and it’s no good. There are so many with this issue. A response from Apple acknowledging that indeed there is a problem and they are aware and working on a solution be it an update, new mic repair, recall, whatever. But it seems we are all being ignored or fed a line to reset the phone or check settings or call WiFi company. This problem occurs in just plain old talking on the phone. Which should be working! I bought a $1,049 256gb iPhone 8 Plus, I shouldn’t have to put earplugs on or use speakerphone as the only way to make calls that people can hear me. Apple please promise us a fix is in the works. Thank you.

Yes, same here, this is my 2nd Brand New iphone 8 Plus and reading all these posts, everyone is getting new ones and then another new one replacing the first one, etc and having the same issue. I also hear everyone trying to go to Apple Stores and standing and dealing with this issue for Hours and Hours and they really are not getting the results they wanted. So, why go into the store if i'm going to have the same experience. Apple needs to get this solved Now! These phones are expensive and I too, use it everyday and need it to function as a basic phone, Apple is ignoring this problem. My word , put a software update out that actually will help us fix the problem. I have tried everything suggested on this forum and Zero have fixed the issue. I hate always using my speaker phone for a call. I dont want others to hear my conversations from the person on the other end of the call. Apple, Address this issue Now and Fix It Now. Apple is monitoring these feeds and comments. Trust me they are and they are aware of the issue, we just need to get a Fix for it. I have such delays on sending pics via texts too. Select a pic and then go to a text option and the phone just sits there and sits there.....its like its frozen and then, no joke, 15 - 20 seconds later it moves to the text contact screen... Its really getting annoying. All my calls, I hear "I cannot hear you" " You sound like you are in a tunnel and its garbled and cutting out"...Ridiculous. $1,000 phone doesn't work. I need it to work everyday and on every call. Apple, do let us know what is going on. Thanks everyone for all your comments and opinions and suggestions.

I didn’t really find a fix.... as I mentioned, I swapped out the mic from an 8 running iOS 11.1.2 and that resolved it because the issue is underlying in the software/firmware. The only thing I can come up with is any iPhone 8 updated past 11.1.2, damages the mic. Im only seeing all these defective mics in iPhones running 11.1.2 or later. I am now using the X with 11.2.5 and solid. I feel it’s an “8” issue on

My software is up to date and still having issues on iphone 8 plus. i hear people with iphone x's experiencing the same issue. If it is an iphone 8 plus issue then Apple needs to address it ASAP! There are a lot of us out here/there! I cant use my phone and i've done the whole replace the phone deal and still, its like they have a batch of bad phones they keep giving us. Why in the world would my backup be the issue, someone suggested it was corrupted. i have used the same steps to back up all my previous iphones clear back to the iphone 3 or 4 which ever was the first one. And have kept everything updated and clean. They dont fix it i'm switching companies. I have love Apple but.....lately we are getting ignored. Then the whole iphone X having a delay in answering phone calls, come on Apple.

Still having the same iphone 8 plus issues after months of having the phone and issues. See, everyone, Apple is reading these comments we all leave. Yes, I have had many comments removed, which i find way funny because we are letting others know what doesnt work. Apple knows whats up with all of us and are not addressing it. They remove our comments because we are speaking the facts. Still having delays in the pic and texting options and delays else where too. Have rebooted my phone daily and its getting old. I have updated to the latest software as well and still having issues. Apple Hear Us and Fix these Problems!!

Yep, constantly having to reboot is not ok and AS A WOMAN I feel especially unsafe with this phone. What if the moment I really need to call someone for help, need 911 or whatever it pulls the usual and decides not to complete the call or needs one of its hourly reboots?! Or, the call goes through, but the 911 operator CANNOT UNDERSTAND ME BECAUSE I AM MUFFLED?! Maybe Apple needs a few people filing lawsuits due to this danger and then they will finally acknowledge this issue and make a fix......

I contacted the Apple support on twitter by direkt message. They have been helpful.

I erased my phone and tested it. The problem still existed.

So I restored it with my back up and of course the problem is still there.

Apple customer support phoned me and could hear the problem first hand. They have booked me in for a Genius Bar visit on Tuesday. Their suggestion is to replace the unit and they say it is a hardware fault.

I will see what happens on Tuesday and report back.
