Since the update to High Sierra, a Preference I set in Mail keeps changing itself.
I prefer the Classic Layout which is chosen from Mail > Preferences > Viewing and this takes effect correctly when I set the Preference, but it keeps dropping out every third or fourth launch so Mail reverts to the modern layout. Anybody else seeing this?
iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), macOS Sierra (10.12.6)
I finally resolved this on my own. I had to delete the correct preferences file. It is here:
/Users/{your username}/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
It is actually a folder. This seems to be the modern method Apple uses for preferences.
Resetting PRAM always a good idea!! Thank you for suggesting it. So far so good (4 hours).
I have not seen the 10.13.2 update in App Store.

It seems different folks are having different sets of preferences spontaneously change on them (the one common theme is losing the Classic layout). Adding to the confusion, the list of which preferences are getting whacked, and which subset of those get automatically restored by just quitting & restarting Mail, has changed for me since I first upgraded to High Sierra.
I have also had one or two occurrences where other Apps lost their prefs, so I'm starting to wonder if this is a bigger problem in High Sierra than just Mail.app.
In fact, Onyx.app doesn't resolve the issue. It's still here some days after.
But when the problem reappears, I restart Mail.app one or two times and my preferences are back. So it looks like sometimes the app just doesn't find the right preference file or something like this.
Other than suggesting a reinstall of the OS or trying it in another user account, send Apple feedback. This has happened with other apps besides Mail and may be an OS problem.
Yes, I have also found that after 24 hours of running with 10.13.2 installed there has so far been no sign of anything changing unexpectedly in Mail. Let's hope that problem has now gone away!
It happens on a new iMac, MacBook Pro and old iMac. Definitely an iOS bug. It's quite annoying as each time it fails to keep my classic preference, my mail boxes and toolbar are arranged to a default and I need to manually adjust them to what I like. Hopefully it gets fixed.
I prefer the Classic Layout, and the same problem happens to me, too.
In addition to the layout setting, settings in the General and Composing tabs also automatically get back to the default several times a day, which is very irritating.
I have reported it to Apple as a bug, and am waiting for an update to fix it.
EXCELLENT point. And thank you for providing the direct link. I have done exactly this now. Others experiencing this issue should do the same. I'd say be as specific as possible, but the box they provide is rather limited in how many characters you can type.
Yes, it does for me . . . sometimes. Other times on a quit and re-launch, more changes occur such as a further change in the order of the mailboxes in the left-hand column and re-launching yet again does not restore my Preferences.
The only option then is to manually re-set the Preferences.
Whilst not "life-threatening" this bug is really irritating.
I am experiencing this as well. My "Conversation View" setting was reset to where the checkbox "Show most recent message at top" was removed.
My sound alert settings keep reseting as well. I do not like any alerts at all and have them off, but every 3rd or 4th Mac Mail open, this is changed back and I start hearing sounds.
Finally, favorite folders are also removed. I like to drag 4 or 5 favorite folders to the gray bar where "Mailboxes" is at the top. Every time Mac Mail resets, these are removed too.
The app is now not only changing on start up. It resets the preferences even when I click on the inbox. The other day, it was running and some time between looking at it, it had reset the preferences.
I see the "revert Mail.app viewing settings" revert to defaults here too (Classic view, font sizes etc.). Super annoying. I'm using two Macs and syncing pretty much everything there is to sync through iCloud. Is everyone else here doing that too? Could it be a bad sync problem? No sign of 10.13.2 update here, how strange (MBP 2013).
Yes, I use Classic Layout and have a similar problem. My mail sorting (View -> Sort By) preferences are not saving and get reset even when switching to another mailbox.
I have reported this as a bug to Apple. Let's hope this gets fixed in the next update.
