Since the update to High Sierra, a Preference I set in Mail keeps changing itself.
I prefer the Classic Layout which is chosen from Mail > Preferences > Viewing and this takes effect correctly when I set the Preference, but it keeps dropping out every third or fourth launch so Mail reverts to the modern layout. Anybody else seeing this?
iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), macOS Sierra (10.12.6)
I finally resolved this on my own. I had to delete the correct preferences file. It is here:
/Users/{your username}/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
It is actually a folder. This seems to be the modern method Apple uses for preferences.
Clearly no one from Apple is interested. Suggest changing to Thunderbird instead.
I don't use Classic layout, but I am losing the order of my accounts under Mailboxes/Inbox, and I lose my Preferences->Viewing->Show most recent message at the top preference every few launches. Super annoying..
Agreed. Definitely not fixed in 10.13.1. Maybe no one at Apple actually uses their own Mail app. Or maybe they just want their customers to stop being old-timers and give up using the Classic (and best, to my mind) view.
Ok, so I'm not alone. Had this happening to me since upgrading to High Sierra, and again this morning it switched from Classic Layout to the modern one. I'm currently running macOS 10.13.1 with all the patches, so I know it's not an issue of needing to update.
Apple, for heavens sake, please fix this. For those of us who use your mail client, it's beyond annoying. What is happening to the QC at Apple??
Same here. So I caved and went with the 'modern' instead of the classic design. Only issue now is that the newest responses that I like to have on top keep going to the bottom. I have to open prefs and click the box again and again and again and...........
I will add myself to the list of people that are experiencing the same problem. I have a mid 2011 iMac and had no problems until the upgrade to High Sierra. It is so sad that Apple is now releasing software the same way Microsoft does, full of bugs and things that instead of enhancing the user experience are making it worse. The same thing happened with the latest version of IOS 11 and HomeSharing, it doesn't work properly and there is no fix in sight. At this rate, it will make more sense to buy Microsoft products. They may not be as good and they are more prone to viruses but for the average user like me, it will be cheaper and easier in the longrun
As a Mac user who owns a successful business that uses Macs, I can assure you from bitter experience that it would make no sense whatsoever to buy Micrsoft products.
Please don't divert the purpose of this thread which is to draw attention to a specific issue with Mail and hopefully get a resolution to the problem.
As a user who pays to buy his products the same way you do and who uses both Apple and Microsoft products at a federal government institution, I reserve the right to express my comments in any way I see fit. The purpose of the thread remains the same, otherwise I would not have mentioned I have the same issue, the same way I have issues with IOS 11 (which have yet to be resolved). Hey, thanks for the suggestion. I was looking for an email client that was good and cheap and Thunderbird sounds like a great option. It's extremely sad that something as simple and as basic as the main email application from Apple is not working properly after the latest OS release. My preferences keep resetting to the default and even the message viewing window changes when I open the Mail app. It's irritating and even if it's not something that will keep the computer from working it certainly makes me not even want to check my email.

Unfortunately that does not fix the problem. After a couple of re-launches Mail is back to the same routine of changing the Preferences.
An additional problem has now appeared in that it is no longer possible to empty the Trash mailbox with the Shift+cmd+Delete key shortcut. The Trash mailbox can be emptied from the menu in the normal way.

Running OnyX did not help me either. Mail still randomly ignores it prefs settings. Apple has really blown High Sierra reliability and security. Time for Apple to reset their development cycles and concentrate on getting things right the first time.
Indeed it does it to me too. I much prefer the classic layout but seems I am getting the same symptoms. I would launch mail and the layout would be the modern version with the content window squashed way over to the right of the window. I close and re-launch and it seems to be back to classic without having changed anything except the lower content window in this layout is all squashed to the bottom - nothing that re-stretching the horizontal toggle bar doesn't solve, but this bug is very annoying!
Another 'me too'... I keep Mail.app open all day, and seemingly at random it will switch viewing prefs - typically once every other day or so. Then I go back to prefs and set it back to Classic. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I have reported this bug to Apple.
The 10.13.2 update is supposed to appear in the update tab of App Store as long as the Mac meets the following High Sierra's system requirement, I guess. Which Mac model are you using ?
