High Sierra contacts not working

Hope someone can help. I am trying to use Contacts on my Mac since upgrading to High Sierra.

I keep my contacts in iCloud.

Whenever I open Contacts, no window opens. It changes the menu bar to Contacts but nothing happens. Right clicking the dock icon says "Application Not Responding".

I unchecked contacts in iCloud (System Preferences > iCloud) and was then able to open contacts. The second I re-enabled contacts in iCloud and immediately the app froze again.

Is anyone else having this issue? I'd love to know how to fix it - I use contacts all the time.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), macOS High Sierra (10.13), null

Start with this fix:

  • Quit Contacts.app
  • Go to User’s Library.
  • Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
  • Make a backup copy of this entire "AddressBook" folder. (in case things goes wrong.
  • Delete the file AddressBook-v22.abcddb
  • Restart Contacts app (on Mac) and this file will be repopulated.

Dave Sag posted these steps that fixed sync for him. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8086745?answerId=32374121022#32374121022

  1. quit Contacts
  2. open ~/Library/Containers and delete anything with addressbook in its name
  3. open ~/Library/Application Support and delete anything with addressbook in its name
  4. open ~/Library/Preferences and delete anything with addressbook in its name
  5. open ~/Library/Caches and delete anything with addressbook in its name
  6. opened System Preferences : iCloud and uncheck contacts
  7. restart your mac
  8. when it boots back up open System Preferences :iCloud and check contacts

Another user posted this fix:

I logged in to iCloud.com, and under Settings > Advanced chose "Restore Contacts", and then restored the contacts from a backup that iCloud.com had automatically performed yesterday. Then, all my contacts appeared on my iMac. Do note that all contacts that have been added after the backup will be lost.

Show User's Library

The User's Library folder is hidden by default. To unhide:

Option 1) Select the Finder in the Dock. Under Go in the Menu bar > hold down the Option key and you’ll see the Library.

Option 2) You can also select the Home folder in the sidebar of a Finder window.

Pull down the “View” menu and select “Show View Options”

Check the box for “Show Library Folder”

Try restarting and see if that fixes the problem.

If that fails, boot into the Recovery Drive and run First Aid in Disk Utility.

Make a note if your drive is formatted as HFS+ Mac OS Extended Journaled or APFS in Disk Utility.

If your drive is OK, select to reinstall macOS.

This will not erase your personal data. However, it's always advised that you backup first in case of unexpected problems.

Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.

See this link for help moving to a new User. Basics are the same. Be very careful with what you bring over from your User's Library. Best to sync as much as you can via iCloud and let it download into new User.

Move your data to a new User or a new Mavericks partition

Hi Diane,

I've tested with a new user and syncing Contacts via iCloud (and nothing else), and the issue is absent there. So, it would appear to be an issue with my current user.

I compared ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook between the two accounts and found they differed.

So, once again, I deleted ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. On recreation (after logging out then in), the differences remain. There are some file size diffs, but significantly the /Images directory is not recreated -- it contains a single file in the test account -- and the /Metadata directory contains only the .info file; whereas the test account contains 3 additional files (named as UUIDs).

Where the files sizes differ (between the two accounts), they are smaller on the recreated account.

These data seem to indicate a failure during creation of the address book on the non-test account. The address book appears to be incomplete; which is likely to be the cause of the other issues.

Of course, an error message in the logs would be nice here, but as with suggestd (which only reports abnormal code: 1) there is nothing usefully reported, which is a shame.

Just a thought... I use Little Snitch to monitor internet traffic on both my iMac and Macbook. It is possible that this was a factor in Contacts not working on my iMac under 10.13.2 and that the installation of 10.13.3 reset Little Snitch. My thinking is that the problem seems to be related to Contacts connecting to iCloud.

Maybe temporarily turn off the macOS firewall, if you have it turned on, and see if that fixes the problem?

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

CREATE A NEW USER

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups.

Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.

Log in with your Apple ID. You can only select Contacts for this test.

Only default Apple apps will be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open other apps you might want to test.

Do you still see the issue?

If yes, then the problem is with your base files or it could be hardware related.

If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.

Another interesting fact. If I logout, and then login as a different user that is setup with my appleid, the errors go away and the contacts.app works perfectly. It must be some problem in my usernames config-files. There is a ******** of stuff in my original accounts ~/Library/Application Support directory compared to the simple test login I set up.

The solution dianeoforegon posted from Dave Sag worked for me (thank you as it's been bugging me for ages!). The one thing I'd say is that after I had manually eyeballed all the files with addressbook and deleted those from the stated folders I also did a search of the library which highlighted some I'd missed. You then have to carefully look to see which folder they are in before deleting... then followed the remaining steps and all good.

Hello,

I have just reported this bug as a developer at Apple Bug Reporter. You could do the same, but be prepared to submit technical details. Open the Console app, under the category System Reports, you should see a Contacts_DATE_MACHINE.hang report. Right-click on it, select "Show in finder", and attach the file to your report.

Or else you can use the standard customer feedback system. See here for a list of feedback mechanisms : :http://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/04/15/how-to-submit-feedback-and-bug-reports-t o-apple/

I've seen this happen on a new iMac fresh out of the box. Logged in with Apple ID and selected sync. Nothing else installed. Sync failed. User had three other devices. Sync worked perfectly with one device but not on others.

The fact that is only affects some users and some devices is making it very difficult for Apple to track down the cause.

In the mean time, you could try adding a Gmail account and move your contacts to Google and see if that syncs properly.
