Bluetooth not working High Sierra

Hi there,

Updated my OS a while ago (2 weeks?) and my Bluetooth isn't working ever since. Turned it on and off a few times, didn't work. So I decided to reset the Bluetooth module, that didn't work either. Neither did removing all connected devices.

The problem is that my Bluetooth keep searching for devices, but can't find any.

Any ideas on how to fix this? People with similar problems?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS High Sierra (10.13)

I just updated today and had to have Apple support walk me through a fix...

After restarting everything in sight. AND disconnecting and reconnecting everything. AND debugging the Bluetooth. Nothing worked. I noticed Bluetooth didn't even give me the option to turn off and next to "Devices" above the empty list was a spinning wheel... searching... for anything.

Apple walked me through powering down and rebooting the SMC.

The simple process (Mine: MBP 2015 15" Retina)

1. Power down

2. Hold SHIFT+ALT+CTRL (on the left side of the key board) + POWER BUTTON for 10 seconds

3. Release all keys

4. Press the power button to boot up

Bluetooth preferences opened up like new. I can turn them on and off and every bluetooth thing in sight was an option.

Typing this from my wireless keyboard now. Hope this helps.

I literally went through sooo many steps with the highest tier of 'Apple Specialists'. They even changed out HARDWARE which didn't fix it either. The ONLY thing that has fixed this bluetooth issue is reverting BACK to Sierra. I've had ZERO issues the last few weeks (daily before) since I went back. However NOW I constantly have to deal with my Mac trying to force me to upgrade to High Sierra. It is DEFINITELY something with their OS and them NOT acknowledging/fixing it is really disheartening and has made me lose my trust in Apple.

They did do tests. I had to send exact date/time down to the seconds of when it happened on my iMac. Keep in mind, my machine isn't even a year old and they've now changed parts that didn't need to be changed, gave me incorrect information. They told me my machine was in Texas and then the Apple Team in Boca called me a few hours later and no one had info correct anywhere. It was so messy. I was so over it. The engineers came back with I needed to wipe my machine completely (again - like 3x now) and start as a new machine. As long as I don't upgrade to High Sierra I have no issues. The minute I upgrade to High Sierra the issues happen. They know it's happening. Like I said their fix is to stay on Sierra and turn off updates so I'm not bothered by them. That's their end result for me. So here we are ...

I legit called every time it happened. I screen shot the time/date. Change your time to show seconds. When you see it happen or notice it screen shot that. Tell them to get you to engineering to test this. I think this is the only way we can get this issue fixed. I mean the Senior Advisor basically said people won't call 100x like I did because it's not worth their time. Most people will complain and just stop using BT unfortunately.

Good Luck!

I have the same problem. I've narrowed the issue down (for me) to after my laptop is been put in sleep mode. And this is all the time. The ironic thing is I wake the computer up from sleep mode by typing on my bluetooth keyboard. It takes about 30 seconds to a minute after waking up from sleep mode before I lose the bluetooth connection. The only 2 temporary solutions I know are:

  1. Restarting my macbook
  2. Once the macbook wakes from sleep mode, If I turn off and back on by bluetooth, then it stays connected.

It is not acceptable to reinstall the Mac.

It take s too much time and is complex with all installed components.

I like to do this as late as possible.

Best regards

Frank

Hi All

We have Apple Care Enterprise cover. at work. I've just spent an hour on the phone to Apple Care. My problem is not fixed but just for the record here is what we tried.

Also, I'll just add that I did a complete fresh re-install (delete HD and start again) of High Sierra 10.13.2 last night to see if that fixed things (it didn't).

I have a Bose Soundlink Mini II speaker and Apple Keyboard as the devices I wanted to find and pair. Both are discoverable when I look on my iPhone.

Here is what we tried today....

1. Reboot MBP - always the first thing they ask you to try

2. Toggle Bluetooth off/on (about 20 second wait) - almost as bad as step 1

3. Turn BT off, Removal of com.apple.bluetooth.plist and com.apple.bluetooth.xxxxxxx plist file, then reboot

4. Reset bluetooth module via bluetooth debug menu

5. NVRAM Reset

6. SMC Reset when you do the SMC reset, if your power supply is attached with the green light - the light is supposed to change to show the SMC has reset. Mine did not change ... so there is a chance my SMC reset is not working.

But, after the attempted SMC reset my MBP started to show up on my iPhone as a device that could be paired... but my MBP still could not see my phone. - odd

7. Booted into SAFE mode and tried to find bluetooth devices - could not find anything

8. Ran Apple Diagnostics via Alt-D at boot - this showed no issues

At this point they said there are two more options. A fresh install of OSX to a new partiton (or delete main partition and install.) but as I already did a fresh install they recommended the final option which is a Repair call and an engineer will come out and investigate as they think it may be a logic board issue.

They have opened a repair ticket for me and Apple care will contact me within 4 working hours to arrange when they can come and repair.

Will let you know if the engineer fixes it!

I already did that. It actually stopped working AT the Apple Store too. Like it was literally doing the same thing we're experiencing WITH an Apple Advisor. That's why they changed my hardware. Still ... same result. Since I went back to Sierra about a month ago and have not had the issue since. Just ***** I can't use the current OS because of their issue :/

I bought beatsX wireless earphones today and paired them right away. Tried to take advantage of the w1 chip and try to connect to it on my 2017 touch bar Macbook pro, didn't work. I tried connecting them as a regular pair of bluetooth ear set, they connect for a second, you choose them under audio output settings and they disconnect immediately. I tried it on an older Mac that is not updated to Sierra, works perfectly. SO obviously, there's something wrong with the bluetooth on the Macbook. I have a Keyboard and a trackpad connected to it, they work fine. I also tried another bluetooth headset and they don't stay connected either. There's something wrong in 10.13.3, if it works in a past version of Mac and also works on my iPhone 7. The beats are updated and also The Macbook is updated as well. I talked to Apple chat, obviously no help. I reseted the beats, no help.

Seems I really should make a clear 4k video of the problem my end. Currently I am trying the iMac with no USB cables plugged in (they were plugged in before but not to active devices). Since then, no bluetooth dropouts. Will try a few days then plug them back in one by one. It may be that they act as aerials, interfering with bluetooth frequency.

But I cannot leave USB cables unplugged to work around an Apple problem. And Apple cannot expect this.

I hope that if I post a very clear demo video that the scale of the problem can be gauged. That the 1st person in the coffee shop I spoke to about this is having the same problem, then I find it hard to believe it is rare.

In the meantime I found this suggestion over on Forbes of all places. Basically the guy is saying turn off handoff on your Mac. Here’s the link. https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradmoon/2017/07/13/this-trick-may-solve-your-mac-b luetooth-connectivity-issues/

Disclaimer: I have not tested this yet. Stay tuned. I’m heading into the office right now.

Best,

Tony
