Bluetooth not working High Sierra

Hi there,

Updated my OS a while ago (2 weeks?) and my Bluetooth isn't working ever since. Turned it on and off a few times, didn't work. So I decided to reset the Bluetooth module, that didn't work either. Neither did removing all connected devices.

The problem is that my Bluetooth keep searching for devices, but can't find any.

Any ideas on how to fix this? People with similar problems?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS High Sierra (10.13)

I just updated today and had to have Apple support walk me through a fix...

After restarting everything in sight. AND disconnecting and reconnecting everything. AND debugging the Bluetooth. Nothing worked. I noticed Bluetooth didn't even give me the option to turn off and next to "Devices" above the empty list was a spinning wheel... searching... for anything.

Apple walked me through powering down and rebooting the SMC.

The simple process (Mine: MBP 2015 15" Retina)

1. Power down

2. Hold SHIFT+ALT+CTRL (on the left side of the key board) + POWER BUTTON for 10 seconds

3. Release all keys

4. Press the power button to boot up

Bluetooth preferences opened up like new. I can turn them on and off and every bluetooth thing in sight was an option.

Typing this from my wireless keyboard now. Hope this helps.

After updating to 10.13.1 and 10.13.2, I've had some Bluetooth issues as well.

  • Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mousepad stopped working even though Bluetooth was on and connected. I tried turning Bluetooth on and off. I had to restart the computer and reconnect them to get them working.
  • Apple Watch is connecting but then won't reconnect automatically when I come back into range. (I used to use my Apple Watch to login to my laptop but it no longer works.)

I have this problem with a brand new 40GB, SSD, 27inch, 5K, iMac running latest updates 10.13.2 (17C88) to High Sierra. It happens always when using Screen Sharing and letting the iMac idle. Once the screen dims a little, no MagicMouse2 and no way to get it back. I've plugged in a 15 year old wired Microsoft mouse and everything works fine no reboot required, no magic.

Rebooting works sometimes and sometimes not. I've tried the things mentioned here and they have not worked. The only thing that works 100% is that old 15 your old wired mouse from a competitor.

In the two months I've had it, this iMac has been the worse Apple computer I have ever owned. When it works it really performs, but the quirks, random quits, stutters, etc. are really bad. If I had not been forced to use an Apple computer I would not.

The fact that Apple does not make a wired mouse just *****. The fact that you cannot charge an Apple mouse while using it *****. I really miss the old Apple that paid attention to functionality and lived up to the phrase "It just works!". Clearly that is no longer the case.

Ever since updating in October/November, I've been having intermittent issues with the bluetooth with my early 2015 macbook pro 13". My apple wireless keyboard and trackpad now have to be connected via two lightening cables to a usb hub connected to my laptop to ensure a connection that is connected 100% of the time. I've done all the recommended resets, deleting pfiles, and refreshing pram again it will work for bit but the problem always re-appears.

More details:

Laptop goes to sleep and sometimes when I wake up the computer the keyboard will sometimes work, if it does, it can stop working after logging in or during a session.

Apple,

It MUST be clear now that this is a MAJOR embarrassment and problem.

Nearly every day, and sometimes multiple times in a day my mouse and/or keyboard drop out. I have to plug the keyboard in and connect a wired mouse in order to then reset Bluetooth. For many, this is not possible, so they have to tediously restart their Mac.

I do not believe this ever happened with my 2010 iMac for the last 7+ years.

I have no USB devices plugged in. No devices nearby that might interfere.

As the person I am replying to clearly states, this is an OS problem. You have degraded the base OS many times as you add new frills. What point multiple desktops if rebooting now loses the assignment of apps to those desktops? The devil is in the detail, but the detail you are now missing is a deep problem.

The Apple help line were friendly but actually believed that a device switched off would stop interfering with Bluetooth if I moved it further away. The Apple store in town still believe they can fix the problem - they would have me bring in my Mac - not so easy without a car I can assure you - and look at the problem. Even though I explained that it was intermittent - minutes or days between occurrences.

You MUST act on this as a severity 1 problem.

Your reputation is in serious jeopardy.

It did it almost instant honestly. But you know how it is ... in/out/in/out. Sometimes for minutes, sometimes for days. To be honest for awhile I just stopped even using them. I plugged my KB in and would just use a USB mouse that I have for my Windows laptop. Thankfully I had that on hand. Of course they tested the hardware. It was never the hardware as EVERYONE HERE has proven. Also, once again, ironically I have had NO ISSUES since going BACK to Sierra. It's more than clear that it's High Sierra as that's when it started and since not using it (over a month now) I've had zero issues with my BT. I only use the mouse/kb with my BT on this iMac, I'm very minimal with accessories/apps/etc. I'm disgruntled at Apple at this point! (And I'm a more recent customer - like the last 3 years maybe?) LOL

I tried downgrading to Sierra to fix this persistently annoying issue on High Sierra. Unfortunately, once all was said and done, my Sierra installation refused to use my High Sierra Time Machine backups. <sigh> So, rather than reinstall everything, I went back to High Sierra and its persistent Bluetooth dropouts.

What makes the dropouts especially annoying is that they cause my docked late 2011 MacBook Pro to lose connectivity with its paired Apple Keyboard and Apple Magic Trackpad. Once Bluetooth connectivity drops completely, the only solution is to undock my MacBook and restart...

I have not seen this issue among these replies.... My bluetooth works for my keyboard, mouse, and TWO of my THREE bluetooth speakers. It will find and connect to two of them, but it can't even FIND the third speaker... and everything was working GREAT on Yosemite, I could even create an aggregate device and play on two BT speakers at once... now I can't even keep two connected...

After struggling a lot with what I think is a similar/the same issue that you guys faced. What actually helped me (because manually setting the Bt headphones as my output device and my built-in mic as input device and any other thing seemed to help) was getting into Audio MIDI Setup native-os app, which allows me to do the following:

Either you'll want to EQ your existing devices or you'll create another device, a multi one and an aggregate one. No much difference between them. Just create the one that fits you best and voi-lá! there you go...

Hope it helped!
