Bluetooth not working High Sierra

Hi there,

Updated my OS a while ago (2 weeks?) and my Bluetooth isn't working ever since. Turned it on and off a few times, didn't work. So I decided to reset the Bluetooth module, that didn't work either. Neither did removing all connected devices.

The problem is that my Bluetooth keep searching for devices, but can't find any.

Any ideas on how to fix this? People with similar problems?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS High Sierra (10.13)

I'm having 2 issues with bluetooth since updating to High Sierra.

1) Similar to you I have connection issues and in the bluetooth section of system preferences the option to delete the device is unavailable. Restarting the OS brings back the option to delete the device in system preferences and then a re-pair get's me back up and running. Having to do this at irregular intervals. No idea what triggers the connection issue.

2) The balance for music is off when using headphones with iTunes. I have bluetooth headphones that can also be connected with an analog aux-in. With the aux-in the headphones work perfectly. When I use the bluetooth function to stream the music the left earphone is far louder than the right. What the heck.

Ok, I seem to have found a solution to my problem regarding the mouse not connecting...this has worked for both me and my wife.

So when your mac is on sleep mode and you hit a key to wake it up, you are then on the screen to log in, this is when you need to click your mouse so it connects (before you type your password)

Problem solved 😉

I literally went through sooo many steps with the highest tier of 'Apple Specialists'. They even changed out HARDWARE which didn't fix it either. The ONLY thing that has fixed this bluetooth issue is reverting BACK to Sierra. I've had ZERO issues the last few weeks (daily before) since I went back. However NOW I constantly have to deal with my Mac trying to force me to upgrade to High Sierra. It is DEFINITELY something with their OS and them NOT acknowledging/fixing it is really disheartening and has made me lose my trust in Apple.

Now I know why.....it was connected to another device...

Once I disconnected from the other device, the Macbook then found the bluetooth headphones, and it connected OK.

It was not obvious or clear though. You'd have thought that it'd be easy to show you the headphones, and just say that they are already connected elsewhere..but perhaps not..

Apple,

It MUST be clear now that this is a MAJOR embarrassment and problem.

Nearly every day, and sometimes multiple times in a day my mouse and/or keyboard drop out. I have to plug the keyboard in and connect a wired mouse in order to then reset Bluetooth. For many, this is not possible, so they have to tediously restart their Mac.

I do not believe this ever happened with my 2010 iMac for the last 7+ years.

I have no USB devices plugged in. No devices nearby that might interfere.

As the person I am replying to clearly states, this is an OS problem. You have degraded the base OS many times as you add new frills. What point multiple desktops if rebooting now loses the assignment of apps to those desktops? The devil is in the detail, but the detail you are now missing is a deep problem.

The Apple help line were friendly but actually believed that a device switched off would stop interfering with Bluetooth if I moved it further away. The Apple store in town still believe they can fix the problem - they would have me bring in my Mac - not so easy without a car I can assure you - and look at the problem. Even though I explained that it was intermittent - minutes or days between occurrences.

You MUST act on this as a severity 1 problem.

Your reputation is in serious jeopardy.

Apple doesn't want to take responsibility for this. Instead they act like we're all just insane. They literally even changed hardware in my new iMac and that didn't fix it. The only fix? I went back to Sierra well over a month ago and ironically NOOO ISSUES SINCE. The only issue is now my computer CONSTANTLY wants me to upgrade. Sad to see so many are still having the same problem as I have to scan this to see WHEN I CAN ACTUALLY upgrade again. Sad.

You have my shared sympathy of course.

My dialogue with Apple support was farcical, in hindsight. To ask me to move away USB connected devices further away when note even powered!

They should do an error causal analysis on why such deeply fundamental issues happen, or not detected in testing (a child could spot this one), and not fixed with good speed. They would, it seems, not be training programmers to respect legacy code. I worked as an IBM systems and applications programmer. On mainframe software, making changes was a microscopically tightly managed process.

You might imagine that they would set up two machines for a soak test, one on Sierra and the other High Sierra. To drill down to the cause.

I am hoping that dialogues such as ours trigger such. Sooner or later, if not already, an Apple showroom demo will be inflicted with this problem.

At this point they won't even recognize this problem. I actually spoke to someone yesterday that said since they'd done everything for me that there was nothing else they could tell me. They won't take any responsibility. I've directed them here, TO THEIR FORUMS, and they tell me that they don't look at these or interact. That the development/engineers are the only ones that possibly look at that. I mean we're literally here troubleshooting FOR THEM and they ignore us and/or act like we're crazy. They will no longer even DISCUSS bluetooth with me! So they told me how to turn off my app update to not get High Sierra update requests multiple times a day. They linked me to how to do that via Twitter. Like they're not even TRYING anymore. I'm so frustrated and disappointed. Maybe we should all just tweet them with a hashtag or something to show them this is a freaking problem!?!?

Oh dear. This is worse than I thought.

It is very revealing that Apple CHOOSES to treat customers with contempt this way.

The same pattern seems to repeat - power and/or wealth creates chasmic distances between people. If Apple were a fledgling company, they would fix this problem with all speed.

Maybe I will try to experiment. I will see how my iMac functions in a different room that has no other devices in it. Except that :

1. This is doing Apples diagnostic work for them

2. If that fixes the problem, which then returns at my desk, what do I do next?

Mar 16, 2018 12:52 PM in response to NeilMoffatt

I already did that. It actually stopped working AT the Apple Store too. Like it was literally doing the same thing we're experiencing WITH an Apple Advisor. That's why they changed my hardware. Still ... same result. Since I went back to Sierra about a month ago and have not had the issue since. Just ***** I can't use the current OS because of their issue :/

Mar 16, 2018 1:03 PM in response to NeilMoffatt

It did it almost instant honestly. But you know how it is ... in/out/in/out. Sometimes for minutes, sometimes for days. To be honest for awhile I just stopped even using them. I plugged my KB in and would just use a USB mouse that I have for my Windows laptop. Thankfully I had that on hand. Of course they tested the hardware. It was never the hardware as EVERYONE HERE has proven. Also, once again, ironically I have had NO ISSUES since going BACK to Sierra. It's more than clear that it's High Sierra as that's when it started and since not using it (over a month now) I've had zero issues with my BT. I only use the mouse/kb with my BT on this iMac, I'm very minimal with accessories/apps/etc. I'm disgruntled at Apple at this point! (And I'm a more recent customer - like the last 3 years maybe?) LOL
