Bluetooth not working High Sierra

Hi there,

Updated my OS a while ago (2 weeks?) and my Bluetooth isn't working ever since. Turned it on and off a few times, didn't work. So I decided to reset the Bluetooth module, that didn't work either. Neither did removing all connected devices.

The problem is that my Bluetooth keep searching for devices, but can't find any.

Any ideas on how to fix this? People with similar problems?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS High Sierra (10.13)

I'm having 2 issues with bluetooth since updating to High Sierra.

1) Similar to you I have connection issues and in the bluetooth section of system preferences the option to delete the device is unavailable. Restarting the OS brings back the option to delete the device in system preferences and then a re-pair get's me back up and running. Having to do this at irregular intervals. No idea what triggers the connection issue.

2) The balance for music is off when using headphones with iTunes. I have bluetooth headphones that can also be connected with an analog aux-in. With the aux-in the headphones work perfectly. When I use the bluetooth function to stream the music the left earphone is far louder than the right. What the heck.

Thanks for the update.

A case of company wide denial, it seems.

Why not trace the changes that might have affected Bluetooth? Surely the bluetooth module is not so huge. And that they can add test code to it.

I am tempted to try another line - to ask the Apple store what they would do if they could reproduce my iMac problem. I can then cite your case.

They did do tests. I had to send exact date/time down to the seconds of when it happened on my iMac. Keep in mind, my machine isn't even a year old and they've now changed parts that didn't need to be changed, gave me incorrect information. They told me my machine was in Texas and then the Apple Team in Boca called me a few hours later and no one had info correct anywhere. It was so messy. I was so over it. The engineers came back with I needed to wipe my machine completely (again - like 3x now) and start as a new machine. As long as I don't upgrade to High Sierra I have no issues. The minute I upgrade to High Sierra the issues happen. They know it's happening. Like I said their fix is to stay on Sierra and turn off updates so I'm not bothered by them. That's their end result for me. So here we are ...

I legit called every time it happened. I screen shot the time/date. Change your time to show seconds. When you see it happen or notice it screen shot that. Tell them to get you to engineering to test this. I think this is the only way we can get this issue fixed. I mean the Senior Advisor basically said people won't call 100x like I did because it's not worth their time. Most people will complain and just stop using BT unfortunately.

Good Luck!

I tried downgrading to Sierra to fix this persistently annoying issue on High Sierra. Unfortunately, once all was said and done, my Sierra installation refused to use my High Sierra Time Machine backups. <sigh> So, rather than reinstall everything, I went back to High Sierra and its persistent Bluetooth dropouts.

What makes the dropouts especially annoying is that they cause my docked late 2011 MacBook Pro to lose connectivity with its paired Apple Keyboard and Apple Magic Trackpad. Once Bluetooth connectivity drops completely, the only solution is to undock my MacBook and restart...

I have not seen this issue among these replies.... My bluetooth works for my keyboard, mouse, and TWO of my THREE bluetooth speakers. It will find and connect to two of them, but it can't even FIND the third speaker... and everything was working GREAT on Yosemite, I could even create an aggregate device and play on two BT speakers at once... now I can't even keep two connected...

You have my sympathy.

This is a terribly embarassing situation for Apple. Or it should be. But they seem to shrug their shoulders and not care.

Maybe the golden boy - the iPhone - is blinding them to legacy machines.

Apple sit in billions of dollars. They clearly have the resources to do their jobs properly.

Has you used Apple support to seek resolution?

The man on the genius bar said that he could not swap my mouse for a wired one because the mouse was not faulty. After 10 minutes talking to his boss he could offer a trackpad replacement. But I pointed out that it too would drop out as it is bluetooth.

They are not aware of this problem and do not see it is well recognised.

I asked if I could invoice Apple for replacement mouse. Nope.

I will try to make a 4k video of the problem and put on YouTube to see how many others are suffering with this problem. I find it hard to believe that it is localised to a few if a bug of the OS. Maybe it is a big in combo with underperforming bluetooth hardware, but your swapped machine denies that.

I bought beatsX wireless earphones today and paired them right away. Tried to take advantage of the w1 chip and try to connect to it on my 2017 touch bar Macbook pro, didn't work. I tried connecting them as a regular pair of bluetooth ear set, they connect for a second, you choose them under audio output settings and they disconnect immediately. I tried it on an older Mac that is not updated to Sierra, works perfectly. SO obviously, there's something wrong with the bluetooth on the Macbook. I have a Keyboard and a trackpad connected to it, they work fine. I also tried another bluetooth headset and they don't stay connected either. There's something wrong in 10.13.3, if it works in a past version of Mac and also works on my iPhone 7. The beats are updated and also The Macbook is updated as well. I talked to Apple chat, obviously no help. I reseted the beats, no help.

Seems I really should make a clear 4k video of the problem my end. Currently I am trying the iMac with no USB cables plugged in (they were plugged in before but not to active devices). Since then, no bluetooth dropouts. Will try a few days then plug them back in one by one. It may be that they act as aerials, interfering with bluetooth frequency.

But I cannot leave USB cables unplugged to work around an Apple problem. And Apple cannot expect this.

I hope that if I post a very clear demo video that the scale of the problem can be gauged. That the 1st person in the coffee shop I spoke to about this is having the same problem, then I find it hard to believe it is rare.

Did you start experiencing the problem after upgrading to High Sierra? Do you have to reboot your Mac to resolve the problem? Or are you now using non-bluetooth devices as I have now had to. My shiny new magic mouse, fault free, sits on the side of my desk, unusable. Replaced by a bought mouse that lacks the nice glidepad on the Apple mouse. So I actually lose hardware functionality thanks to this bluetooth problem.

I guess I have the same issue with my Magic Mouse:

Sometimes, it disconnects, sometimes macOS looses BT completely, and at least once I had two entries for the single mouse I have (none was working).

After reboot, the mouse connects again - but I didn't become an Apple customer because I want to fix problems with reboots and fresh installs.

I noticed this bug after installing Sierra High in my job's iMac and then I had to find a Windows mouse with a cable to finish setting up and then after updated again from the App Store this trouble has gone...My latest version working fine is 10.13.3
