Well this is silly, since I have no interest in proving anything. As a courtesy, I'll go ahead and address your question, Tom. Check out jinsonkv's post. He explains when he goes to send an email from his Mac, the letters are replaced. Re: How do I fix my iPhone from turning letters and words into symbols?
Friendly comment ... as a computer engineer with over 20 years experience my path to wisdom started long ago when I first realized how much I really don't know~
1. Try syncing with your iTunes computer. 2. If that doesn't work, do a full backup and then restore to factory settings from the backup. 3. If that doesn't work do a factory restore and set up as new.
I was having the exact same problem today. I think I found a fix by going to General -> Keyboards-> Text Replacement. Then add a new one by hitting the plus sign. I just said make I change to I. Seems to be working!
I had the same issue, and fixed it in this way too, by creating a shortcut from “I” to “I”. Autocorrect is still trying to catch it where it can. I have been having wild keyboard issues all evening: random words get capitalized or several letters will appear when I thoe One (that was typing “type one”), it’s like the keyboard sensitivity and location is off as well. Note, I’m not using the new “one hand typing” feature in iOS 11.
The autocorrect from I to the unreadable symbol seems to be a bug affecting lots of iPhones.
This super annoying!! Apple are you going to fix this issue anytime soon because I would like to text without someone asking me "what's wrong with your phone?". This phone is suppose to help with my everyday life and it's do nothing but making it harder and more annoying everyday.
I too am having this same problem. Strangely enough though I’ve noticed it today in a Facebook post, but if I copy the text of the post and paste it, it doesn’t show the strange characters. As a current work-around, when I type the letter I, I make sure to choose it from the suggestions before continuing.
Easy fix!!! It's a keyboard problem with apple!! Not your phone!! Download the GBOARD APP THE GOOGLE KEYBOARD FOR NOW . to general, KEYBOARD, Delete the English keyboard , And change to GBOARD! It's functional for now at least until apple fixes their keyboard ! Anyways the GBOARD is pretty good too!
I spoke with Apple. They are aware of the issue. Their engineers are working. I’d expect an update coming out shortly. All those options below didn’t fix issue. Unless you want to turn off auto-correct but that’s annoying.
Went to my local Apple Store and the Genius Bar is closed for the IPhone 10. Girl up front looked at it anyways and couldn’t figure it out. Went and asked a co worker. He said, “Yeah dude, sorry, you’re kind of SOL. Im sure Apple will fix it though.”
Same thing happened to me but after working with Apple support and doing screen share, etc. it was actually not the computer that didn’t have enough space but the iPhone (even though the error message does day “computer”)
Was working to restore a saved iTunes backup so knowing I had that to work with they had me restore the phone to factory and then restore from backup and it worked.

So, Is anyone at Apple even embarrassed by this kind of thing any more? It doesn't seem like there is adequate discipline in coding or testing.
Well, since no one here is from Apple, it is hard to tell. It is not affecting everyone. I've not noticed it on any of our devices at home, and we have 8 devices, 5 iPhones and 3 iPads. Seems this bug only affects selected users. So they are working on a fix.
I'm truly glad it is not affecting everyone or your family. My point is that it seems that Apple is very much "not here, IMO. Poor code, unstable code, and/or lack of discipline. It's just that simple.
You are welcome to your opinion. You've made your determination what the problem is. Apple is addressing the problem. I'm sorry you are experiencing a problem, but you are trying to make points about Apple, when this forum is not manned by them. It wasn't necessary to come back and repeat your coding comments. When you agreed to the Terms of Service here, you acknowledged that Apple wasn't here. My comment about the family was to point out that not everyone is experiencing the issue, so it would be difficult to determine the cause, but Apple has acknowledged it and has identified a workaround. I'm not sure what else you are wanting, except to make negative comments about Apple.
