Go to "Settings" "General" "Accessibility" and shut off "Noise Cancellation." Unfortunately this didn't fix my problem...even having no case on the phone. There is clearly something wrong with the design or in need of an APP to fix this overwhelming issue.
Have been meaning to post this for a while - the issue is not the phone. It’s the flip case. When you fold it back, it covers the rear mic and the phone thinks your voice is the background noise (hence trying to cancel it out).
I have tried calling without folding the cover and multiple people confirmed my voice was crisp.
Here is what I figured out. You cant hold the phone between your shoulder and ear as so many commonly do when doing something while on the phone. You cant hold the phone tight against your hand at the top of the phone near the camera. You cant use a portfolio case of any kind with the cover opened back. Disabling noise cancelling will not correct the problem. This is 100% an issue with the rear mic by the camera.
How to use your phone until Apple corrects this issue.
1: Hold the phone with the tips of your fingers towards the bottom of the phone creating an arch in your palm to allow plenty of room between your phone and your palm.
2: Do not hold the phone with your shoulder while on a call.
3: If using a portfolio style case. Open it to answer the call or dial, then close the case and make the call with the case closed making sure you hold your phone as listed in 1:
4: Put it on speaker phone
5:Bluetooth device.
This is the only way to use your phone with decent audio quality until Apple corrects this problem via software, firmware, hardware update or combination of all three. Exchanging sim cards, phones and other fixes will not correct this issue.
If implementing 1 through 5 does not correct your problem then you may need a phone replacement/repair, but I would be willing to bet that almost all phones will work properly if following those techniques. At least using these techniques you will be able to make an important business call without missed communications and sounding completely unprofessional.

Apple said they know there is a problem and they are working on a fix. I couldn’t return my $120 folio case as I received it 3 weeks befor the phone. Apple offered a new case and $150 in Iphone related Apple store merchandise. I was told not to send back the Wallet case. I found that if you hold your finger tip between the wallet case when open it works fine. Iphone model # is NQAK2LL/A
Most people here are talking about the iPhone X microphone not working, not the EarPods. Yes, the EarPods do cancel all other microphones. Have you tried a different set of headphones that have a microphone?
Think I might have to do that, how long was you without your phone for 🤔
The best way to test it is , be with someone who has a phone and call him and then steer talking for a minute, swap phones and you can hear the difference 😬
I am on my third iPhone X and nothing has helped and Apple really has no regard for their customers regarding this issue. I absolutely agree with Tiptx4, there are other phones out there that work great an you can actually place a phone call with them, novel idea. I have since changed over to a Pixel 2 XL and it is a far superior phone in my opinion.
This issue is occuring on many models, not just the X.
It's linked to cellular voice calls only. Facetime audio call are fine.
Searching for answers to "iphone, people say they can't hear me" or "people say I sound muffled,"
reveals the X, 8, 7, SE are all suffering from this maddening issue.
Don't bother wasting your time with resets, restores, and new sim cards. The problem will come back.
Testing the microphones will not show any issues.
Apple hardware diagnostics will not show any problems either.
A replacement phone will most likely have the same issue.
Only thing that seems to help is blocking the rear microphone near the flash.
Either by putting your finger over it, or a piece of tape.
My 2 cents...This is either a software bug related to noise cancellation & the rear mic,
in some revision of ios 11.x.x, or a hardware issue within the audio codec chip on the logic board,
which only services cellular voice compression.
So if you take a look at the beginning of these threads, individuals can select I have this question as well. It is at almost 1700 just for this thread. There are other threads in the Apple communities that revolve around this issue as well. Not to mention, there are entire websites devoted to this issue that has been going on since the iPhone 7. Also, if you get far enough with Apple with your case they will admit that this is a known issue and there engineers are working on it. However, they would never admit that publicly. What I really don't understand is if you phone is working so well how did you end up in this discussion? In addition, this only happens if you are making a call from the handset, not using air-pods or using the speaker phone. How do you know your phone sounds great, maybe no one is telling you it sounds like crap.
Everyone including apple seems to know about this issue except you! Even the executive level at apple know there has been an ongoing issue since 7. The strange thing is not all folks are having this problem. We were with Verizon and now with Sprint, we'll see if it makes a difference.
LOL, who said I wasn't aware that some people mentioned having problems? Somewhere in one of these threads I even mentioned a friend with an iPhone X and a leather folio who learned she had to not cover the ambiance microphone in order for people to hear her. But I've not had the problem and many others I know with iPhones since the 7 haven't had it. So you are saying that executives at Apple know that every iPhone since the 7 has this issue? Really?
I have had some success by switching ON noise cancellation and hold my pinkie tightly over the rear mic next to the camera.
Switch noise cancellation off => terrible
Not holding the pinkie over that mic => terrible
So to use an Apple phone as a phone you need 1000£ and a strong pinkie. FFS.
I use the phone without a case. I realized that the problem is related to the congestion cell tower.
It should be the same as disabling the noise reduction function. Hearing Aid Compatibility "Toggled On"disables turns off the noise reduction function.
Turn your phone off and on..
people cant hear me on calls on iphone x
