iPhone X, phone calls and Apple's Folio Case

I have an iPhone X with Apple's Folio Case, Great, right?

But ... when I made (or received) 'phone calls, people couldn't hear me properly - I was 'muffled'.

I tried voice memos. It worked.

I tried calling my own land line (with answering machine). Horrible, muffled.

The problem? I was folding the 'flip lid' all the way back so it was against the back of the 'phone. It seems the rear mic is relied upon and doesn't like being covered up. That's a concern for me as I reaaly wanted to have a firm grip on my 'phone. The only way it's going to work right now is to have the flap against my face. That's not the main concern (get a _good_ grip on an expensive device!).

The folded flap works just fine with "Voice Memos".

This is a SW issue. Yes, I disabled Accessibly "Noise Reduction" to see if it works.

This transcends the origami iPad case, where the inside rests on (e.g.) a mucky table. Then, it folds back up against the iPad's glass.

Well done. Could someone please look @ this?

Hi MugWup,

This could even be something as simple as the case interfering with or obstructing the iPhone's antenna. If this is the case, there is no workaround. If your case is new, and you still have the original packaging, you may be entitled to a refund given that you're not receiving the satisfaction that you expected from the product.

To enquire about a refund, or possible solutions for your particular case, you'll need to contact Apple Support.

There are 2 ways of contacting Apple Support:

Contacting AppleCare

If you're happy to speak to a technician over the phone to try and resolve your issue at home, you may use AppleCare to do so. If you'd like to get in touch with someone from AppleCare, simply go to getsupport.apple.com to get a callback from AppleCare.

Making a reservation

If you'd like to skip contacting AppleCare, you can create a reservation for your nearest Apple Store using the Apple Support App on your iPhone. Simply download the app, sign in with your Apple ID and follow the on-screen prompts to create a reservation.

If you do end up seeking a replacement, this is the kind of feedback that Apple would love to collect! You can provide product feedback over at apple.com/feedback.

If you have any further questions, queries or concerns, please don't hesitate to reply to the thread as I'm following it.

Best of luck!

It has been reported with the iPhone 7 and later, with this type of case. It's not restricted to iPhone X. And it should be obvious that if you cover a microphone that it will result in muffled sound. It's physics, not something that can be easily fixed in hardware or software.

I help a lot of people taking pictures through a submarine periscope with iPhones, and these cases also interfere with use of the camera. It's just a poor choice of case for any smartphone.

Thanks for getting back to me Lawrence. I stopped the Phone Noise Cancellation and my voice is still muffled. I tried it with my own answering machine and you could tell the difference in my voice.

I'm inclined to agree with the opinion that ANY folio type case will act the same when you fold the cover flap over the rear camera lens. I picked up an inexpensive folio case on Amazon and it acted the same. Not sure how Apple will solve this without disabling that rear mic.

I'll keep checking in.

Ha!

11.2 does indeed seem to have fixed the muffleupagus effect.

Only, now I have an Apple folio case with an extra 'aperture' that I made using a largish ( ~10mm radius) hollow leather punch - let's just say I was sick of not being able to use my iFX properly (holding it with a safe grip).

So to test things under 'standard' conditions, I stuck a coaster over the extra aperture - to replicate a solid back flap. I could have been imagining things on my answering machine, so I called someone who verified I wasn't muffled.

Sure, this is only a sample population of 1 to date. Time will tell.

As I said - Ha! Anyone in the market for a folio case with an extra hole in it? I suppose that's asking if someone would like an extra hole in their head, huh?

Hi, I'm in France, I have the same problem that people complain about the same problem, when I flip the mobile party folio at the back I have a microphone problem

Hello, I solved the problem, Apple Store France reimburse me the product (even after 30 days.
I find a new case of the brand TORRO uk Who does not pose a problem, the Date Magnet is placed at another location.
the solution can also come with a holster without portfolio magnet to date Apple has no solution for this problem.

Some users reported that upgrading to iOS 11.2 solves this problem.

Thank you for your update on your experience with the Apple store.

franch77,

Thanks for the tip on the TORRO Uk cases. They look pretty nice. Not sure if "Date Magnet" translated right. Which case did you buy?

Thanks, David

Just pointing out the fact that nobody at Apple held a gun to your head and forced you to get that particular style of case. The fact that it doesn’t seem to work as expected with the iPhone isn’t an issue with the iPhone—which, from what you’ve mentioned, seems to be performing as expected.

To me, it seems perfectly reasonable that if you cover the mic with something, the sound transmitted would be muffled. That = Common Sense.

There is no flaw in performance, so your problem really is that you’re feeling entitled to things just working for you because you’re you. Sorry—the solution to your problem is not to yell at Apple about it but to simply get a case that works with the phone. That is in your hands, not Apple’s.

Well there is some speculation that the magnets or their position in the case could be interfering with the microphone. Still a design flaw which probably should have been found by Apple.

I was just trying to find if another folio type case without the magnets in that position had the problem. franch77 seemed to feel that way initially so wondered if that was still the case.

I have the same problem. Everyone I have spoken to when the case was in place has complained about muffled sound. Most annoying. Have returned the case for credit and reverted to the standard silicon case. Pity as the case was very nice. I regard this as an unforgivable fail by Apple. How could this have got past their testing? Can’t believe that they are still offering it for sale.

Hello,

As I mentioned before... For me since I did the update to 11.2 I haven’t had any issues. Prior to update it happened every time. Now it’s never. Anybody else do the update and have success? For those that say it’s not a software glitch/update...I can’t imagine Apple would not have found covering the sound cancelling mic in testing muffled phone calls. Maybe a a glitch in the software.
