iPhone X with Apple Leather Folio Mic Issues

I have a repeatable problem affecting two iPhone Xs with the new Apple Leather Folio cover; when the cover is folded behind the phone in order to take a call, the microphone is muffled.

This appears to be caused by the folio's magnet interfering with the phone's microphone.

If, during the call, the cover is opened wide so it is not folded behind the phone, the call quality is immediately improved.

I'm guessing that this is going to be a problem for everyone as it is happening to both my and my wife's phones in the exactly the same manner.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Hi,

I had the same problem and returned the leather folio case. The problem is not issued by magnets, it is because the folded cover overlaps the little microphone between the two camera lenses (little hole), which should reduce the background noises. Using this folio with cover folded it also rups over the microphone and it is almost impossible to make phone calls. I almost returned my iPhone, cause I thought it might be the phone, that is not working. I talked to the people from Telekom, went 2 times in an Apple Store, but nobody could help me and nobody knew anything about the problem.

It is an constructional defect of the leather folio case.

Just bought the Otterbox Strada and everything works fine. The iPhone X ist a great mobile phone, the best I ever had, but the leather folio is disaster.

But the reviews for the Otterbox Strada at Amazon claim they have the same problem. It is a design problem of the iphone x

No, it is a problem with the iPhone 7 and 8 series also; all of the phone models that have a 2nd noise cancellation mic on the back. Reports go back 18 months of this issue with folio type cases if you fold the flap all the way back.

Yes - We can confirm this is happening with my wife's new Iphone X and the Apple Leather Folio case. We swapped new phones and confirmed it is not the phone. We had an accidental discovery at the Apple Store when the call was made without the case and it sounded fine but the problem returned when the case was added back. Many may not realize unless they get a feedback from the call receivers providing a feedback that they cannot understand assuming they think the caller is not drunk 🙂 or at a crowded place.

I had the same problem

EE my service provider sent me a text linking here

I bought my case from the Apple store in Cardiff and took it back this week well after the 14 day return date

The manager, Derek, was most helpful and was not aware of the issue. I showed him this thread and he agreed straight away to refund the £90 I had paid for the case.

My problem now is what to replace it with . Can anyone recommend a good quality leather folio case that doesn’t pose the same problem - is there one where the flap folds downwards rather than sideways

Also has anyone experience of the Clear Coat Fusion protective covering - it is pricy - £150 but seems too goodto be true?

I think there is a problem with the noise cancelling algorithms. I have experimented with noise cancelling, and when you take a lower volume copy of your voice and use it as the noise profile, in an app like Audacity, you get somewhat the same effect as when talking in the phone. I do hope Apple engieneers would do something to remedy this problem.

Since this does clearly happen with all folio cases, not just the one by Apple, the problem is within the phone, not the case.

By the way, please file a radar on this matter, and leave a link to this thread as well in it. Ive heard Apple engieneers say, if there is no radar, there is no issue.

I agree, and there was an earlier post that suggested that with the flap folded back the gap between the flap and the mic channeled your voice to the noise canceling mic. That is consistent with your hypothesis. But it isn't the algorithm, because without a case there is no problem. And I also saw a post that said if you hold the flap tightly against the back there is no problem either. I will ask the hosts to pass the problem on, although if a number of cases are being returned Apple's inventory management system will notice.

Everyone, it's not that big of a deal, really... All you have to do is hold the phone with the flap open and you're good to go. The folio case make that easy as it's soft leather. I love the folio case from Apple and the convenience it lends. Furthermore, I'm sure Apple know about it and will update at some point, tweaking things, to solve the matter of the flap+noise cancellation mic throwing the the user's voice out of whack.

I have disabled the noise reduction and still experience this while using a flip over case. Really annoying as I spent a lot of money on the case and don’t really want to get rid of it as it offers good protection. As this model of iPhone is the most breakabl, I don’t want to have only back protection. One way round it is to put the call onto speaker but that’s not always practical. Love the phone but such a shame about the problem.
