iPhone 8/ 8 plus home button cracked

I have been using my iPhone 8 for a little over 6 weeks. Last night I plugged in my phone to charge and walked away for about an hour. When I came back the phone had turned off and I observed a hairline crack running across the home button. The phone was not dropped or even touched during this time. It honestly just spontaneously cracked. I know that the iPhone 7 had a similar issue but I was not able to find anyone that had experiences a similar issue with the iPhone 8.

I called Apple care and they advised that it would be anywhere from 99-600 dollars to have the home button replaced. Has anyone had a similar issue with their iPhone 8 or 8 plus? Thank you.

Here you go, I have changed some details but you get the jist. Also I cant share the email address as it pertains to my particular Apple case ID and mine has been closed. You will need to reply to the email you receive from the Apple rep.I hope this helps your case and I hope this gets more traction to get the wider issue looked at.

Hi,
Firstly, thank you for your great customer service and support yesterday and making an
exception to fix my iPhone 8 + screen due to the home button cracking itself.
However, this is not the end of the issue and I will list them below;

  • I went to Oobe in Wellington NZ yesterday and the guy advised based on the notes that Apple will fix the screen (home button included) free of charge however any other damage resulting from this issue they will not cover.
  • He asked me to wipe my phone but back it up first at home – I tried to update it then back it up but the phone, either hardware or software, has corrupted terribly and now it has been restored to factory with several issues to me personally.
    1. I lost ALL my data as it would not update and self-restored to factory settings – I had a lot of baby photos from January (we had a newborn on Jan 3rd) and I hadn’t backed up my phone as we moved into my in-laws house while we
build our house so my computer is in storage making it difficult to do my once a month back up to my PC. I also had some personal notes not backed up anywhere which is also painful. I never thought my 7 month old phone would break so quickly.
    2. The phone after restoring still will not boot up to the hello screen or anything else so I used an existing back up to restore to the phone and that did not work so it keeps looping through apple logo, bar loading and then black screen which suggest it could be something more than just the screen itself, it could be a hardware or software issue that you advised would not be covered as only
the screen replacement is covered by Apple.
  • I have logged a claim with my insurance company as I think this will not be resolved as easily as I think and this will cost me $200 excess as well as a penalty on my non-claims bonus. This is pending and I haven’t undertaken this course of action yet but the claim is lodged.
  • I did some further research on this issue and found many threads that replicate exactly what happened to me and my device. Reading the comments reiterated to me that I did not drop or bang my phone but this happened on its own via some faulty hardware or just pure bad design. Below are the threads I have looked at and most come from the Apple community forums on the Apple website. I will
restate; I did not drop the phone, I did not bump it against anything, I did not handle it roughly prior to the damage and I never have. I had used it with no issues, then 5 mins later charged it, then not long after I pulled out the lightning cable and placed into my pocket but had not checked the phone so it could have been damaged by then. I went to the bathroom and kitchen and after 5 mins I went to my desk pulled it out of my pocket and saw the damage. It sits in a Otterbox symmetry case with a screen protector on it – it is cared for as if it is one of my children and cost me $1449 NZD which I still have not fully paid for yet.
  • Here are the threads I mentioned and they all have a common theme – they were charging it and came back to see damage. Could it be that the charging is causing this issue:
    1. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8153835 - my phone looks exactly as the picture in this thread
    2. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8269914
    3. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8308437
    4. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8250804 - this is exactly my issue
    5. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8069340 - subject line refers to iPhone 7 but some comments mention iPhone 8
    6. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7742979 - also iphone 7 related but they use the same/similar hardware for the home
      button
    7. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8093709
    8. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8046417
There are many more of these re iPhone 7 on Apple’s website and from other websites but I think you get the point.
Im very frustrated that I can easily see a common theme here but Apple doesn’t – I have wasted time, energy and money on this issue and Apple hasn’t accepted liability they have only just made an “exception” for me where I see a bigger issue.
I am tempted to go to my commerce commission, Fair Go (NZ TV show that deals with consumers being ripped off) and our media outlets to vent my frustration and make this known to the wider community.
My main concern is that this may happen to other people and they go through the same process as me and get frustrated and potentially lose all their data (like I did which is causing me a massive headache and my new-borns pictures from his birth cannot be recovered ).
This shouldn’t happen and the response from Apple’s reps is unacceptable.
I will await your response before proceeding with what action I will take.
Please reply as quickly as you can as I need to make a decision soon.
Thanks.

Have the same issue from August on my 7 Plus, happened on charger just laying by itself, not dropped. After immediately finding this thread, I've been to 2 Apple Stores in London, escalated it as a safety issue (as the button is hot almost all the time), spent multiple hours on conversations in chat and on the phone, and no luck. Super frustrating experience, as they all imply you damaged it by yourself and just tell them fancy stories to justify your careless use of the phone (mine is flawless). The last time I've been to the Apple Store I left the phone for a safety escalation and they kept it for 10 days until the phone warranty expired. I'm just curious how would they learn there is a new issue if all "geniuses" immediate reaction is "oh there is a crack. it's a paid repair, you're just lying".

This happened to me 2 days ago too, so clearly it is still an issue. Same story as all of yours on here -- charged iPhone, picked it up, cracked and hot home button, phone only 2 months old. I called Apple, talked to a tech who concluded at the end that it was a hardware defect and the phone would be replaced with no charge. Recommended I go to my local store to do this, which I did, and they insisted I have to pay the $169+tax because I broke it and they've never heard of this issue before. Well a) clearly this is not an unknown issue, and b) I am not abusive, nor excessive with the use of my iPhone, so a tech simply telling me I pushed it too hard (and also snarkily adding that it "isn't a button, it's a sensor and you don't push, it just gives you the sensation of pushing it") doesn't add up to me. (Particularly if I didn't push it, but that's a different argument). I paid bc I needed it fixed, but have also called Apple again to have someone file a complaint, and also filled out some generic webform (apple feedback or something) the guy at the store told me to do (bc that is the only way I could possibly get reimbursed). My hopes are not high, and I am absolutely furious with this situation.

I have had the same problem. Put my phone on bedside table on charge and when I woke my phone was burning hot, but charger not. Black screen with apple symbol in the middle. Took 30 mins to cool down and when it did turned back on to find it say touch I'd not activated on this device which it was before and upon inspection the home button cracked. Now they are saying I have to pay £127.03 to get it fixed surely this is not right iv not done anything to damage it just put it on charge like I'd do every night. Any advice on what to do next?

I am the next one in line with a cracked home button on my iPhone 8 Plus, 3 1/2 month old. I have never dropped the phone and for no reason the button just cracked. When starting up the phone it reports: "TOUCH ID: Cannot activate settings of TOUCH ID on this iPhone" (not exact phrased as I translated it from Danish).

I decided to contact Apple Support first. I told them that this in NOT an accidential damage, but an issue they have with iPhone 8/8 Plus. I told him about this thread and that we are thousand of users with the same problem. I got an case from them and the kind supported I talked to that I should send the phone to the authorized dealer and refer to both this thread and the case I have open with Apple. I am not going to accept that they don't replace the phone.

I will post the progress of the case here.

Just happen to me tonite, for no reason, was talking to my sister, phone cut off and I got the Apple emblem. After turning it back on home bottom would not work, got a message saying home bottom would no longer work on this phone and it gave me an embedded home Botton to use as the home botton but the passcode touch will not work.

I have spent a lot of time discussing this with Apple but guess what, they won't repair my device because the Apple repair site says that the button was pressed down (lowered) and that can only happen if I have misused it which I of course haven't.
I asked the Apple Care person to report to his superior that APPLE has a problem here. We are thoursand of users with this problem.

😠

Did you resolve the issue? I just left Apple and I showed them the newsfeed and they told me it’s not verified from Apple and the hole button looked to be a impact damage. I didn’t drop my phone or anything, I always used the wireless charging and Just the one day I use the cable my home button cracked. They wanted me to use my accidental damage and I said no, it’s not fair.

Nov 30, 2018 1:21 AM in response to milan.f112

Hi, no I didn't get resolved at all, was told the same that I would have to use my insurance or pay to get it fixed. Been to 3 Apple shops now and none interested. Even said there must have been a stone or grit on the home button when I pressed it, nonsense. Also told them about this discussion and there reply was than I could fine a discussion on any fault. Think I will report to trading standards next.

Nov 30, 2018 8:39 AM in response to miafromlarbert

I called through the phone and I kept being nice and I said it’s not fair for me that this broke and I wasn’t at fault, I’ve been loyal since iPhone 3GS. T

wo people ended up understanding and read through the discussions and believed it and I got it fixed with out paying or using my accidental report. Just keep trying. The problem with people is that no one believes it until they witness it. I prefer dealing with apple on the phone because they’re so much nicer and caring.
