iPhone 8/ 8 plus home button cracked

I have been using my iPhone 8 for a little over 6 weeks. Last night I plugged in my phone to charge and walked away for about an hour. When I came back the phone had turned off and I observed a hairline crack running across the home button. The phone was not dropped or even touched during this time. It honestly just spontaneously cracked. I know that the iPhone 7 had a similar issue but I was not able to find anyone that had experiences a similar issue with the iPhone 8.

I called Apple care and they advised that it would be anywhere from 99-600 dollars to have the home button replaced. Has anyone had a similar issue with their iPhone 8 or 8 plus? Thank you.

Here you go, I have changed some details but you get the jist. Also I cant share the email address as it pertains to my particular Apple case ID and mine has been closed. You will need to reply to the email you receive from the Apple rep.I hope this helps your case and I hope this gets more traction to get the wider issue looked at.

Hi,
Firstly, thank you for your great customer service and support yesterday and making an
exception to fix my iPhone 8 + screen due to the home button cracking itself.
However, this is not the end of the issue and I will list them below;

  • I went to Oobe in Wellington NZ yesterday and the guy advised based on the notes that Apple will fix the screen (home button included) free of charge however any other damage resulting from this issue they will not cover.
  • He asked me to wipe my phone but back it up first at home – I tried to update it then back it up but the phone, either hardware or software, has corrupted terribly and now it has been restored to factory with several issues to me personally.
    1. I lost ALL my data as it would not update and self-restored to factory settings – I had a lot of baby photos from January (we had a newborn on Jan 3rd) and I hadn’t backed up my phone as we moved into my in-laws house while we
build our house so my computer is in storage making it difficult to do my once a month back up to my PC. I also had some personal notes not backed up anywhere which is also painful. I never thought my 7 month old phone would break so quickly.
    2. The phone after restoring still will not boot up to the hello screen or anything else so I used an existing back up to restore to the phone and that did not work so it keeps looping through apple logo, bar loading and then black screen which suggest it could be something more than just the screen itself, it could be a hardware or software issue that you advised would not be covered as only
the screen replacement is covered by Apple.
  • I have logged a claim with my insurance company as I think this will not be resolved as easily as I think and this will cost me $200 excess as well as a penalty on my non-claims bonus. This is pending and I haven’t undertaken this course of action yet but the claim is lodged.
  • I did some further research on this issue and found many threads that replicate exactly what happened to me and my device. Reading the comments reiterated to me that I did not drop or bang my phone but this happened on its own via some faulty hardware or just pure bad design. Below are the threads I have looked at and most come from the Apple community forums on the Apple website. I will
restate; I did not drop the phone, I did not bump it against anything, I did not handle it roughly prior to the damage and I never have. I had used it with no issues, then 5 mins later charged it, then not long after I pulled out the lightning cable and placed into my pocket but had not checked the phone so it could have been damaged by then. I went to the bathroom and kitchen and after 5 mins I went to my desk pulled it out of my pocket and saw the damage. It sits in a Otterbox symmetry case with a screen protector on it – it is cared for as if it is one of my children and cost me $1449 NZD which I still have not fully paid for yet.
  • Here are the threads I mentioned and they all have a common theme – they were charging it and came back to see damage. Could it be that the charging is causing this issue:
    1. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8153835 - my phone looks exactly as the picture in this thread
    2. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8269914
    3. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8308437
    4. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8250804 - this is exactly my issue
    5. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8069340 - subject line refers to iPhone 7 but some comments mention iPhone 8
    6. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7742979 - also iphone 7 related but they use the same/similar hardware for the home
      button
    7. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8093709
    8. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8046417
There are many more of these re iPhone 7 on Apple’s website and from other websites but I think you get the point.
Im very frustrated that I can easily see a common theme here but Apple doesn’t – I have wasted time, energy and money on this issue and Apple hasn’t accepted liability they have only just made an “exception” for me where I see a bigger issue.
I am tempted to go to my commerce commission, Fair Go (NZ TV show that deals with consumers being ripped off) and our media outlets to vent my frustration and make this known to the wider community.
My main concern is that this may happen to other people and they go through the same process as me and get frustrated and potentially lose all their data (like I did which is causing me a massive headache and my new-borns pictures from his birth cannot be recovered ).
This shouldn’t happen and the response from Apple’s reps is unacceptable.
I will await your response before proceeding with what action I will take.
Please reply as quickly as you can as I need to make a decision soon.
Thanks.

Well, I just had the same thing happen to me with my iPhone 8 plus. I had been sitting at my kitchen table editing images on instagram, I Got up to put my phone on it's charger and fixed some lunch, came back to the phone maybe 10 minutes later, and the white icon apple screen was appearing. I thought the low battery had shut it off initially, but once I was able to get it back up and running, I still had 49% charge. I could not get the home button to function, but a small home button icon, that looked like a little app type icon, suddenly appeared on my screen above my home button. I wasn't sure initially what it was, but then realized my actual home button was so hot, that I thought it might catch my phone on fire. I immediately took the phone up to Verizon, because it's less than 2 months old. The associate there said, there was either a software issue, or my home button was fried, but stated it was most likely fried. He suggested I take it to the apple store to have it replaced. He said they (meaning Verizon) could order me a replacement phone, but it would be refurbished, and that it would take up to a week. He stated that if I took it to apple, they would replace it right there in their store, with a new phone. It actually wasn't until this morning I noticed that the home button is cracked. I did not notice a crack yesterday, and when I came to grab it off the charger this morning, it was cracked. The associate at the store apparently didn't notice one either, if he did he certainly didn't say anything, hence the reason he is sending me to apple I suppose. This apparently is an issue that no one wants to deal with. I have an appointment tomorrow, I will certainly be arming myself, with all this information on this feed!!!

Just had this happen to my 2 week old iPhone 8+. All of a sudden crack on the home button. Went to Apple store and they said there was a $169 accidental drop. Feeling defeated and needing this phone ASAP, I agreed. Found this thread, and immediately contacted customer support. They said that there isn't a program setup, for this and doesn't know how or why other people are getting free screen replacements. I'm going to try one more time tonight for Apple Support, and see if they can waive the fee, but I'm doubtful.

I agree it happened to me too and now thanks to you guys I know I’m not alone but also know that Apple won’t take responsibility for the problem so I’m going to have to pay to get it fixed. As soon as I’m able to upgrade or my contract is up I will never get another iPhone as long as I live. It’s sad because I’ve used iPhones for the last 8 Year’s. I sat my phone in the passenger seat and walk in side a gas station with the car running for 4 minutes if that and I come back and the screen is black with the Apple sign then all of a sudden a crack appeared on the button and the phone messing up is covered under warranty since I haven’t even had it 2 months yep but not the button cracking. So now I have to come up with $180 to get the button fixed. Like I said I am done I don’t mind having to pay for things when it’s my fault but it’s bull crap when you didn’t do anything. I am a single mother with two kids who is struggling enough as it is and now I have to pay to get it fixed and scared this will happen again before I can switch my phone. If I had the money I would definitely buy out my contract So I can get a reliable phone.

The exact same issue just happened to me. My iPhone 8 was working fine, I left it on a table and after 15 min I found it with the white screen, infinite loop and cracked Home button. I was alone at home, no pets or something, the phone hasn't ever been dropped and I certainly didn't apply any pressure/force to it.

I already left feedback on this issue, but I'm really frustrated because nearest Apple service is in... another country. The phone was bought in Europe, I'm living in Ukraine, and I can't find an option on support website to contact them from my location. I can send the phone to the nearest service, but according to this thread, I have all chances to get it back in a month with denial of warranty repair if not contacting someone from Apple support first.

This just happened to me after 2 days of buying a brand new iphone 8 plus. I'm so heartbroken right now. I put it in my pocket not more than 5 minutes, the room of my pocket are quite loose so it does not give a pressure on the phone, didn't hit it with any hard object, and the phone is the only thing inside the pocket. Pull it out and put it on the table and the phone was already in boot mode with a home button cracked for God knows how :( I can't deny that i loved apple's product so much but for the first time in my life, i'm terribly disappointed in the quality of th product!! The only hope i have left is that apple can cover this damage under warranty. With a phone this expensive how can the home screen cracked untouched less than a week and expect us to pay for something that is broken by itself.

Where are you located? Did you get the free repair?

My Apple 8 button is cracked, the system was on a continuous loop and couldn't boot. Now the system has been restored and internally the phone is fine.... but I can't use phone until the button is repaired. Apple store won't budge on repairing it free even though it's still under 1 year warranty. They want $165 to repair and I just won't do it. I have over 10 phones and other devices in our family. Had to pay for numerous other issues (batteries, cracked screen, fried software but all those were out of warranty). I just want apple to stand by their products and do right by a loyal long term customer. I was thinking about buying a laptop for the future but I am getting bad feelings about this.

This has happened me... Have bought so many Apple products over the years and this is the first to cause me serious problems.

Spent 5 hours of my only day off last week trying to sort this out. An in store technician told me and reported on the work authorisation form, "Examined device at Genius Bar - there is no signs of customer misuse, no dents or damage to support how the home button could of gotten cracked. MRI diagnostics confirmed home button issues and both the home button and Touch ID could not be picked up." Yet still told me I would have to pay £149 to get the whole thing fixed, she said it was unfair I had to pay and also said she could escalate and arrange a call with Apple Support in regards to seeing what they could do RE: the repair fee.

Few hours pass and after a phone call with Apple Support who were utterly rude (kept cutting me off) and confusion surrounding everything I walked back into the store to see the manager. Never have I received worst customer service in my life - I was made out to be a liar and kept repeating the "obvious sign of a point of impact"... How there could be a point of impact from a phone that I left for 30 mins charging on my bed is mind boggling. A technician spent 30 minutes looking over my phone and operating my phone to then write a detailed report on how the damage was not caused by myself, yet the manager who took literally two seconds to look at my phone overruled that and refused to waive the fee. Told him he would need to sit down with his team to ensure they all get on the same page because one person telling me one thing and an incompetent manager overruling it is horrendous customer service.

Totally pleased with the service I received from the technician when handling my case and she was more than understanding, I even went as far as letting her read this thread on my phone and she herself admitted she didn't like the vulnerability of the home button.

I've since been passed on to Apple Support, specifically in contact with one agent who I can email and call directly, I have uploaded the report made by the technician. I will not give up on this until an acceptable resolution has been found.

I have this same issue - my I phone8 plus is 10 months old, one week ago had the screen replaced and paid £169 last night i plugged the phone in to charge (original apple charger), came back after gym to the apple logo and unable to turn on the phone. The home button was red hot and not making the click sound that was when i looked closer and noticed the crack which had gotten worse. I'm so worried about going to the genius bar tomorrow that I will have to pay again when its clear the screen replacement had something to do with it.

Same things happened to me after one month of using the my iPhone 8+. After realising the crack, I didn’t sent it to the service centre cause there is no problem on it. However, after 2 months the receiver speaker is not working, so I sent it to the service centre. They said my device was rejected for replacement because of the home button cracked, the warranty is void. I understand about the policy, so I have ask them is it possible for them to just repair the speaker for me because that’s only problem I’m having right now, even it is not under warranty I’m willing to pay. However, they insist that I have to pay half of phone price for a replacement. What kind of logic is that, who is willing to pay another 1/2 of the original price to get a new phone for a phone you just used for 3 months? They are such a bully. Just want to take money from customers.

I also had this same issue and they fixed it!

Recently my iPhone 8 home button shattered after I lightly pressed it (I'd had the phone for a month), as soon as it shattered the phone shut down and rebooted with assistive touch. I booked an appointment with apple for a few days later. The next day I was using the phone and the home button was extremely hot, unbearable to touch and the heat could be felt through my pocket even when the phone wasn't in use the battery was also depleting a lot faster than before the home button cracked. That night the phone rebooted randomly and then became stuck in a reboot loop. I booked a closer appointment and went in. When I first told my story I wasn't believed they told me it had an impact point meaning it had been dropped and I was lying which ticked me off. I told them to repair it but if any of the previous issues persist they would be covering those. The repair was quoted at $230 AUD. When I left the store while it was being repaired I thought I'd have a look to see if anyone had an issue like this before. Fortunately I found this thread and went back into the store to show them that people had had this issue when they didn't even touch the home button. We spoke to a different guy and he took another look and commented on the immaculateness of the phone (its been in a case and glass screen protecter since I bought it) he agreed that the home button was faulty and they covered the cost of the repair. Apparently the home button is made of glass which is a lot stronger than the display, so even if it was dropped the home button would be the hardest thing to break, indicating that it was faulty if it broke so easy. Apple need to be made aware of this issue so that it can be resolved easier. Keep persistent guys.
