High Sierra gmail problem

Since upgrading to High Sierra, Apple Mail will not connect to gmail. When I type my password I get a message, "Unable to verify account name or password". If I go to gmail on the web using Safari I can get right onto the account so the log in info is fine.

I have this problem too.

I can sign in to the app store. I can get an apple ID verification code (multiple times) but there is no place to type it.

Two choices only:

1. Username and password

2. I forgot

no place for verification code.

and i did not forget my username and password.

if your iCloud account is not connected ( just an example ) , open mail application click on I cloud and send a mail from - iCloud address ( in To - field type your gmail address ) the mail will be sent to your inbox in your apple mail application a pop up appears .in this screen shot it is showing could not connect to outgoing server , thats the reason when connection doctor is opened SMTP for iCloud is totally vanished .You can apply same with gmail say if IMAP or SMTP is not working . Simply click on always use this server to get joined .

And you will observe all IMAP / SMTP for gmail account and iCloud account are showing green dots and joined to their respective server .

I found the problem and fix for this.
Apparently, Apple Mail may not be using SSL out of the box, and Gmail sees the login request as originating from "a less secure app" ... I received this email from Google shortly after trying to add my Gmail for business hosted email address to Apple mail.

After clicking on the "allowing access to less secure apps" link I was presented with this option. After selecting "On" I was able to successfully add an account for my Gmail address to my Apple Mac Mail.

Once the profile is established, then you can go into Apple Mail preferences (not Internet Accounts in System Preferences for some reason) and confirm that SSL is indeed on, by turning off "automatically manage connection settings" as documented here:

https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/articles/222597488-MacMail-How-to-make-chang es-to-an-existing-Mail-account

Even though Apple appears to have TLS/SSL turned on, Gmail sees the initial IMAP login as a "less secure app"

Hope this helps =)

I have exactly the same problem. Gmail works fine in Safari as webmail but not with Mail, same response as you are getting. The password used by Keychain logs me into Gmail fine in Safari but not in Mail. It also works fine with older versions of OSMac and on other devices. WHAT have you done Apple? One of the most popular email services and you've screwed it! Get your finger out and get it sorted.

It was frustrating me too. What finally worked was to delete All my email accounts. It was scary when they asked if I was sure I wanted to delete the GMail, because all the mail would be lost, but there was something to uncheck and that grayed out the warning. One of the accounts I had to delete was iCloud AND Google and some account for gaming with Apple (didn't know I even had it). THis had to be done in the Internet Accounts System Prefs Panel, but I did it in the Mail application and Mail referred me to that panel and even opened it for me. Very nice Apple. Then I started a new Gmail acct (in MAIL) by selecting Google (after having deleted it earlier, remember) and then I only typed my email address and password, and in came all the mail. Ahh!

Hi,

I had this and similar problems with Gmail on my Mac after reinstalling High Sierra the other day to get past various bugs I couldn't fix. For what it is worth, here is how I got it to work although I don't know how long I have before it goes down again.

I wasted time trying to configure my Gmail account in Apple Mail. I tried IMAP and POP. You all know how much time this takes with 2-step verification, increasingly complicated passwords etc etc. Irritating to say the least. At one point, I got a message saying Mail was not a trusted App. Obviously trying to get me to install the App on my Mac as on my iPhone. Anyway, I just stopped trying and quit Mail after configuring Gmail via the web to forward my mails. On a hunch, I went into System Preferences––with Mail turned off––and tried setting up Gmail.

It worked. I just opened Mail and my Gmail account is there although it doesn't seem to be recovering all the mails from the web server. But at least I can receive mails to that address on my Mac.

I am having this issue with all accounts through mail as well as through iCloud. All gmail accounts prompt me to enter my password. When I enter the correct password, the screen goes gray and does nothing. Outlook prompts a different error:

"Connections to host outlook.office365.com on the default ports failed."

These issues appear to have started randomly on Friday but maybe there was a small update I am not remembering.

More concerning, perhaps, is the fact that my computer also prevents me from logging in to iCloud. Similar phenomenon - when I enter the correct password, the verification applet becomes unresponsive or says "An unknown error occurred".

The big problem here is that now I can't access the app store to receive updates!

I see that some people have had luck with removing and re-adding accounts. This is not a fix! It's a work-around. So...where is the fix?

I have the same issues now too. Continually prompted to login to icloud - won't connect. Google Calendar won't connect, when enter password and verification code it just grey's out. Until I found this thread I thought I had been hacked in some way to capture all my passwords.

logged out of icould on imessage, can't log back in. Guess I will keep an eye on this thread for a solution.

Frustration.

For anyone following this thread and still having this problem, nothing suggested here worked for me but I found my solution here (and I have no affiliation with this site whatsoever): http://simoncox.com/article/how-to-solve-the-apple-mail-unable-to-verify-account -name-or-password-issue

In short, if you re-enter the password on the Internet Accounts window, as opposed to the prompt window or even the Mail Preferences window, it should work. It worked for me anyway, when nothing else did. Fingers crossed that it sticks.

I've just solved this. May have been luck, but this is what I did.

I changed my google password as it was the same as my icloud. Not sure if that affects things but just in case. I then logged out of Google Drive. Removed passwords from keychain. Went into Google in My Account and removed Mac OS. Then I deleted every internet account I had on the Macbook.

Closed it down then I added the account through calendar, just as a calendar. Then when I went into Internet Accounts I could add in mail and so far it's working! I hope for good now!!

Two of my gmail accounts worked and one did not. I discovered that if I have the mailbox list showing in the menu at left (click on "Mailboxes" at top left to hide/show this), and then CONTROL CLICK on the recalcitrant mailbox, a pop up menu shows with one option being "Take "xx.gmail online." I chose that and Bingo - mail working. Have no idea why that account defaulted to offline, nor why I haven't found that solution before now.
