High Sierra gmail problem

Since upgrading to High Sierra, Apple Mail will not connect to gmail. When I type my password I get a message, "Unable to verify account name or password". If I go to gmail on the web using Safari I can get right onto the account so the log in info is fine.

I chatted with Apple. They had me delete my gmail act and reactivate. Nothing. Then I noticed that I had an iCloud acct for the same email address. Once I deleted that I could reactivate my gmail account.

Hi, this did not work for me. I also have problem using the mail app towards all my google accounts after upgrading from osx 10.13.5 to 10.13.6. This is only the case on my iMac and not my older MacBook Pro. I have 2-step authentication on all my accounts and this works perfectly fine on osx 10.13.6 on my MacBook Pro (Late 2012 model), but not on the iMac (late 2015 model). Turning off 2-step authentication on one of my google accounts did not solve the problem for me, as several here describes.

I have tried most of the recipes posted in this thread but none have worked. What to do?

if your iCloud account is not connected ( just an example ) , open mail application click on I cloud and send a mail from - iCloud address ( in To - field type your gmail address ) the mail will be sent to your inbox in your apple mail application a pop up appears .in this screen shot it is showing could not connect to outgoing server , thats the reason when connection doctor is opened SMTP for iCloud is totally vanished .You can apply same with gmail say if IMAP or SMTP is not working . Simply click on always use this server to get joined .

And you will observe all IMAP / SMTP for gmail account and iCloud account are showing green dots and joined to their respective server .

Two of my gmail accounts worked and one did not. I discovered that if I have the mailbox list showing in the menu at left (click on "Mailboxes" at top left to hide/show this), and then CONTROL CLICK on the recalcitrant mailbox, a pop up menu shows with one option being "Take "xx.gmail online." I chose that and Bingo - mail working. Have no idea why that account defaulted to offline, nor why I haven't found that solution before now.

Is anyone having this problem on iOS? Google is saying that google limits the amount of data that can be transferred through the IMAP protocol. When the limit is reached, gmail takes forever to populate in iOS and desktop. They recommended setting gmail up as an exchange account on iOS (exchange setup doesn't work on macOS). I've tried to set gmail up as an exchange account but it keeps saying that it cannot connect to the server. These problems just started happening about 6 weeks ago.

I too have a problem signing into Gmail using Thunderbird. It refuses my password whilst I have no problem logging into Gmail using Chrome with the same password. Maybe I am a cynic but it could be that Google is trying to control which software can access Gmail as it is losing out on advertising.

I prefer to use Thunderbird as it is far more useable and versatile. There are no adverts whereas using Gmail in Chrome I get many unsolicited advertisements.

I have tried all the recommended solutions but none of them work.

I'm going to give it 30 days to see if things change after which I will use a new email account and stop using Gmail and Chrome altogether - ADVERTISERS IN GMAIL NOTE!
