Apple TV 4K Random HDMI Signal Loss

Anyone have a similar issue they have solved? I originally had the issue of flicker that was solved on my LG C7 by changing motion to User set at 0, but an issue I am having is the signal from my ATV to the TV drops out randomly. Usually I can make it through a show, but a movie it will drop at least once. Audio seams to reset here and there too, but it comes right back with the little Dolby Vision logo on the TV flashing. To get the picture back I have to put the ATV to sleep and then turn it back on. If it wasn’t for the free 4K iTunes upgrades I think I would just be done with this thing. I have tried brand new cables too by the way.

I’m having the same issue as well. I have an LG 65” SJ8500 with Dolby Vision connected to the Apple TV 4K. I’ve tried turning the SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) settings off and on on both the Apple TV and LG and still have the same issue. Glad to find other people having this issue because I almost returned my TV thinking it was defective.

For people who cannot afford the Echogear cable, they will be restricted to 1080p 30Hz, and should sell their Apple TV 4K and get an older model.

That is quite untrue. I bought HDMI cables from Amazon at a cost of £ 7.50 and they work perfectly well. They were incorrectly classified as Ultra High Speed which is incorrect but many resellers do this, the correct certification nomenclature is Premium High Speed.

Hello all,

I don't have a solution, but I believe that I'm into something that causes the issue: the music.

- When I listen to music in Apple Music, I have the signal loss pretty quickly. It is super annoying.

- When I watch Netflix, I don't get the signal loss. I didn't get it for ages. However, in the episode 18, season 2 of Riverdale, they had 2 musical dance and guess what? I got the signal loss both times in each of the musical dance.

Coincidence? I think not. My setup is the Amazon Basic HDMI cable, with the Boss Soundbar and the LG C7.

Hi,

Is it still working for you? And I suppose you mean the Belkin HDMI cable they’re selling on the Apple website? We‘re using a Belkin High-Speed HDMI cable (not the same they have at the website now) on a LG OLED 55B7V, and it worked fine for 3-4 weeks and then the random HDMI signal loss started again (we got a new Apple TV 4K after the first one had terrible trouble with signal loss and lots of other errors). And now the signal loss happens frequently when using the device...

I found something in another thread discussing audio that might be worth trying.

If you're like me you have your Apple TV 4K connected to the HDMI 2 port (my Sat/Cable-box is on HDMI 1).

HDMI 2 is a HDMI ARC port. At least on the B/C/E7 series of LG OLEDS.

Appreantly ARC is a new nifty standard that sends audio and other control signals back through the HDMI-cable, which might be good if you use a soundbar etc. Apparenly it can also screw things up and I think that's what causing my Apple TV 4K to loose hdmi sync every now and then.

I've now switched to HDMI 3 instead and haven't had this issue since.

Might be worth trying!

As a side note: any new HMDI cable should be good enough.

Problem still persists even with the right cables. I'm using the 48Gbps Belkin cable from my LG OLED65C7 (non-ARC port) to my Onkyo TX-NR676 receiver and the Echogear 48Gbps cable from the receiver the Apple TV. The problem disappeared for around 2-3 weeks after installing the new cables but it just happened twice in one night: black screen with audio and white static flashes. All I have to do is pull up the Onkyo setup menu and then exit out and the Dolby Vision resets, but this shouldn't be happening!

Michael, I have exactly the same setup that you do: The Onkyo receiver, Apple 4K, the LG OLED65C7, and even one Echogear cable and one Belkin cable. The only difference is that my Belkin cable runs from the Apple TV 4K to the receiver, and the Echogear from the receiver to the TV. So far, no problems.

My guess is that if you replace the Echogear with another Belkin cable, the problem will go away.

Pretty sure it’s an appletv issue as I don’t have any issues when I used to have the amazon fire t. 4k streamer hooked up (using a regular hdmi cable) to the LG TV.

I will say since I switched to hdmi 2 and bought that $13 echo gear hdmi cable I haven’t had any issues, but from the sounds of this forum it’s just a matter of time. The only sure solution for me was to kick it down to Dolby vision 30hz (which has obvious drawbacks)

Amazing how 4k worked fine with the amazon fire streamer and my LG TV, but I get dropouts (as well as everyone else but you on this thread) when watching AppleTV on 4K (especially with Netflix when it’s on the 60HZ setting).

Help me understand why 100’s of people who all have AppleTV and a LG set ups in this thread are getting dropouts while watching 4k material, and yet the problem ISN’T the AppleTV?

Jun 1, 2018 5:26 AM in response to mick0016

Firstly, you have no idea how many folks are suffering this issue; there are a handful only in this thread, however even if it's hundreds it's quite insignificant when correlated with the fact that there are millions of Apple TVs in use.

Secondly, NetFlix is lower quality than iTunes movies; this potentially means the bandwidth used by the HDMI connection could be lower (conjecture)

Finally and I'm repeating myself here, millions of Apple TV's including mine, don't have this problem

And you don't know how many people are suffering from this issue that aren't aware / posting on this thread or even what the problem is... Millions of people that own 4K AppleTV's don't have an LG OLED 4K TV - notice the similarity in this thread? (**** - most of them don't even have a 4K TV).

Bottom line, there's a technical / software issue with the AppleTV 4K when using it on 60Hz with an LG TV that needs to be corrected by Apple.
