Some characters not appearing in keyboard viewer

ׁWhen I'm using my custom Hebrew keyboard, I find that some characters don't appear in keyboard viewer.

While this is mildly irritating for some issues, I mapped all of the cantillation characters to option-numbers and none of them appear. Since I don't recall which is which, this is incredibly problematic.

Is there a way to change the keyboard viewer so as to show these characters ?

My guess is that one of the fonts you may have installed in Home/Library/Fonts is interfering with the one normally used by Apple, so you will eventually need to deactivate it in any case.

You might also try a safe boot

macOS Sierra: Start up in safe mode

and setting up a new user account.

The layout works, it's just that the keyboard isn't displaying properly, now.

Understood. But I've made dozens of keyboards without having that problem, and there is nothing you can change about keyboard viewer anyway. So presumably something is amiss in the .keylayout file. Those question marks are not normal either. Email the flle. if you would like me to take a look.

I don't think your problem could be missing or damaged Apple fonts. It's most likely some font you have installed which is botched and causing a conflict. Have you tried just temporarily removing them to your desktop and restarting to see if helps fix the problem? If it does, you can put half back in at a time to narrow down the possible culprit.

It a bit tricky, having many fonts... I'm using FontBook but also Fontexplorer X to manage them.

I'm using also Skyfonts, Microsoft and Adobe fonts by their apps...

I did as you wrote: restoring system fonts in FontBook, it removed from the Library about 10 fonts only, I deactivated them, but no change: ok in new user, not ok in my account.

The same also in another Mac, here: in Sierra there was no problem, after High Sierra I noted the problem, without change nothing else.

I'm trying other ways...

What font uses the Keyboard Viewer in Mac OS X 10.13 High Sierra?

Go to Font Book and the Uncode Hebrew range and select a letter like ק. Then go to the Font Variation pane at bottom right and see which font is closest to what you see in Keyboard Viewer. I am on El Capitan at the moment and it looks like Arial or Arial Hebrew is the default. Your keyboard viewer may be using something other than the default, so you might need to check in the new user too what is being used.

In my High Sierra it definitely looks like Lucida Grande, and all the characters display correctly. I wonder if somewhere you may have another older version of this font which is more limited, or another more limited font which is being mistaken for Lucida Grande.

Doesn't that jklstudios link explain how to disable/remove fonts in system/library/fonts?

However the symbol for Enter in English or Italian keyboard in the new (functioning account) is definitely Helvetica Neue (↩︎). I think that for Hebrew it is used more than a font: Enter, accents and normal letters...

Anyway: Helvetica (and Helvetica Neue), Lucida Grande, Menlo and the other system fonts seems to be regularly installed in both accounts.

Tried also restart in safe mode: it doesn't help. always missed font (or better: substituted by "Last resort") for Enter in every keyboards, and no accents in Hebrew and Arabic keyboard.

Ok in standard new user (both normal and safe mode).

Switching to safe mode, the user fonts were reduced by an half but always with the issue.

Could it be some preferences? And which?
