I had the same issue with iOS 11.4 and i resolved it this way (it never came up again):

  • Press and release Volume Up button
  • Press and release Volume Down button
  • Long press Lock button and 'Slide to power off'

This is not the normal procedure used to shutdown your iPhone (Volume Up button + Lock button) because it will also empty the cache.

Once you have powered off your iPhone DON'T POWER ON FOR ~30 MINUTES this step made the difference.

As you apparently didn't read the thread you posted to, I will summarize it:

If it only happens when you have the phone plugged in, you have a bad cable. Replace the cable.

if it happens all the time you have a bad digitizer in the screen. Make a Genius Bar appointment to have the screen replaced. Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

There is a very slight chance the problem is software. Restore iOS to factory settings using iTunes (Restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support). If the problem is still present, see above.

There are 2 possible causes of this problem:

  • It it only occurs when the phone is plugged in you have a defective Lightning cable, so try a different cable. And make sure it is either certified as Made for iPhone or an Apple cable.
  • If it occurs when nothing is plugged in the phone has a defective digitizer. Apple will repair it under warranty.

esteemed applex in my case is the same. The problem started on Monday and worsened each day until it became unusable. I'm on vacation and I can not change the iPhone until February but as in all cases I want to change it for a brand new, not a refurbish. in your case the model that you replace starts with "n" or with "m"?. The first letter of the model describes what type of unit it is, whether it is brand new or refurbish. thanks for your answer.

I had this issue pop up on December 18. Which was exactly 15 days after getting the iPhone X on 11/3. Can you guess the terms of the return policy (from carrier)?.... 14 days. Luckily, and I mean seriously.... luckily - I did not purchase from a direct Carrier, I purchased from COSTCO and they have a 90 day return policy. I was able to have COSTCO order a brand new device direct from Verizon, and did an exchange. I just wanted to add my experience to the conversation and put a phrase in my comments that I was searching for when I was looking for help. "Phantom Touches".

Having this issue - so frustrating. Just got the phone about a month ago, while at work it started going crazy - apps opening/closing quickly, when trying to select something on the screen it was as though I was touching another part of the screen, zooming in/out quickly. Tried hard reset, did factory reset and installed iCloud backup, then factory reset and set up as new phone without restoring from any backup and still did it. I was told if this happens, it must be a hardware issue, not software issue. I guess this means I need to try to go get a new one. :/

I went to my local Apple store, told them what happened. They took me right away with no appointment (next available appointment was a week later). They had me speak with a manager. Then, They brought someone from the back room. This was the person who would handle my repair. They offered a two tiered solution - calling it a “false touch” issue, they were going to replace the screen. And, if that didn’t work, they were going to give me a new phone.

They replaced the screen in about 45 minutes. It has worked fine ever since.

I recommend going to the store - capture the craziness on video if possible (I used someone else’s phone).
