iTunes 12.7.2 CD Burning Issues

On my Windows 10 PC that hosts my primary iTunes music collection (70000+ songs) just completed the upgrade to the latest iTunes release (shows 12.7.2.58 as the version) via the Apple Software Update process.

After completing the upgrade I attempted to burn the playlists for 4 new classical albums (all MP3 downloads) to CD-R media. The CD burning process for all 4 albums failed with the following error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred. (0x80004005)".

In each instance the albums played without issue when listening to them via iTunes (and my computer speakers).

Thinking that this may be an issue with iTunes 12.7.2 I logged on to another computer with an iTunes instance that had not been upgraded (the iTunes version on the other PC is 12.7.1.14). I copied the MP3 files for all 4 albums to that iTunes instance and then created playlists for each album. Was able to burn the playlists for all 4 albums to CD media with NO errors.

I will also note that with iTunes 12.7.2.58 I was able to burn one playlist to CD successfully but the burning process was painfully slow (4-5 times slower than normal).

Based on these results it appears to me that iTunes 12.7.2 has some significant bugs/issues relating to burning playlists to CD media.

Rolling back to iTunes 12.7.1.14 may be easier than transferring your playlists into Windows Media Player.

Uninstall iTunes then download and install one of the following as appropriate:

An alternative suggestion is to limit the burn speed to something slower than you would normally use.

Reports suggest Apple are aware of the issue but there is no ETA for a new build.

Further info on this issue from RogerBat.

I have multiple computers available to me and have iTunes installed on several of them. I took one of my spare systems that had iTunes 12.7.1.14 installed on (running Windows 10) and successfully burned an audio CD from a playlist (one of the classical albums that I first encountered this issue on).

I then used Apple Software Update to upgrade the iTunes instance to the latest 12.7.2.58 release and attempted to burn an audio CD using the same playlist and the result was the same error message reported above.

So everything was identical (same computer, same OS and same playlist and MP3 content) and all that changed was the iTunes version - successful audio CD creation with 12.1.1.14 and failure with 12.7.2.58.

Thus, this clearly appears to be a "bug/issue" with iTunes 12.7.2.58.

Thank you for using my initial posting to initiate the follow-up call to Apple Support. I had mistakenly thought that they were more active in monitoring these user forums. If something like this happens again I'll follow up directly with Apple Support after posting my discussion item to the community site.

MUCH appreciate your reaching out to them and hope that they get this bug resolved soon after their engineers take a look at things!!

Hi, wanted to let you know that I just finished up an extended call with Apple Support (was escalated to one of the Senior members of their team) which included sending him an e-mail with a detailed outline of the issues that so many of us have encountered and a "snapshot" of the error message that we are getting when we attempt to burn a playlist to blank CDR media.

His shift ends shortly but will follow up with him tomorrow afternoon when he starts his next shift (have his phone number and extension) to see if he gets anything back from engineering or other staff after they review the information I sent him.

I have the same issues. Further, upon investigating the registry I discovered an object that, when a third-party service attempted to remove the object, caused my hard drive to fail. I have uninstalled itunes from my new hardrive (it was installed against my wishes by the third-party), and have yet to try to burn my music to cd using alternate software. My concern is that Apple has placed something in my registry that damages my pc's ability to burn media.

Well, we are definitely in competition then in terms of who has wasted more CDs 😠 (LOL, but not really funny) because I am sadly nearing that number and, in fact, just bought a new 50-pack of CD-R CDs. So, here's my most recent update: Spent another 2 hours on the phone today with a senior advisor at Apple. Although nearly every Apple employee I've spoken to has been kind and eager to help (notice how I wrote "nearly every," LOL), Joe seems to be the only one who is determined to figure this out. He walked me through specific steps to send certain info to Apple's engineers and is supposed to contact me early next week (so Monday or Tuesday) for an update. When I couldn't reach Joe yesterday on his direct line, I worried that he had given up and deserted me so I ended up calling the general # and speaking to someone else--another Apple senior advisor, I believe (I've spoken to so many people there since last week that I've literally lost track!). This guy was basically telling me that it's a Windows error and that I need to go through Microsoft. But I already tried that. I had to wait several days to even be able to schedule a call from Microsoft. It was supposed to be on Tuesday at 1:15 p.m., and you know when the call finally came? Somewhere between 6 and 7 p.m. that night! Are they serious?! The woman from Microsoft was awful. She was pretty darn cold, and I could tell almost from the second she spoke that she was not going to be any kind of help to me. And well, she wasn't. She blamed the error on Apple/iTunes, which don't get me wrong honestly seems to be the case, but the lady wasn't even the least bit interested in trying to help. I think I will have to file a complaint with Microsoft. So, let's keep our fingers crossed that this Joe guy will come through for me and, in the process, for the rest of us frustrated fans 😮.
