iTunes 12.7.2 CD Burning Issues

On my Windows 10 PC that hosts my primary iTunes music collection (70000+ songs) just completed the upgrade to the latest iTunes release (shows 12.7.2.58 as the version) via the Apple Software Update process.

After completing the upgrade I attempted to burn the playlists for 4 new classical albums (all MP3 downloads) to CD-R media. The CD burning process for all 4 albums failed with the following error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred. (0x80004005)".

In each instance the albums played without issue when listening to them via iTunes (and my computer speakers).

Thinking that this may be an issue with iTunes 12.7.2 I logged on to another computer with an iTunes instance that had not been upgraded (the iTunes version on the other PC is 12.7.1.14). I copied the MP3 files for all 4 albums to that iTunes instance and then created playlists for each album. Was able to burn the playlists for all 4 albums to CD media with NO errors.

I will also note that with iTunes 12.7.2.58 I was able to burn one playlist to CD successfully but the burning process was painfully slow (4-5 times slower than normal).

Based on these results it appears to me that iTunes 12.7.2 has some significant bugs/issues relating to burning playlists to CD media.

Uninstall iTunes. Download and install one of the following as appropriate:

Thanks to Ridley1555 we know it isn't necessary to uninstall the other components in this instance, nor do you need to roll back your database.

Does this uninstall remove playlists I have spent several years creating?

No, you are only removing the current software and reinstalling an older version. Your database remains unchanged. That said I strongly recommend you Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy, or something similar, to protect your data against drive failure and other adverse events.

latest update to the above:

I uninstalled iTunes version 12.7.2.60 and installed iTunes version 12.6.2.20 for which I had luckily kept an old download. This completely solved the CD burning problem.

Note, however, that to make this work I first had to delete the iTunes folder from Music on my hard drive because the older version of iTunes was incompatible with the newer iTunes Library.itl file. So yes I've now lost the local copy of my library contents and playlists but I'm pleased to say I can re-download everything I need from the cloud whenever I want to create a new playlist and/or burn to audio CD.

Ouch, that should not have been necessary. Did you delete the whole library or just the database? Do you have a backup? If you'd gone back to 12.7.1.14 as advised elsewhere in this thread there would have been no problem. When you do need to revert to a version that doesn't want to open the newer library there is a workaround presented in Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash that would minimise the impact.

Installing iTunes also installs Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update and Bonjour. Uninstalling iTunes doesn't automatically remove them, and depending on which version you choose to go back to all components need to be removed first. I haven't tested this personally but the reports from other users suggest that the CD burning issue is limited to iTunes for Windows 12.7.2.58 & 12.7.2.60 and that reverting 12.7.1.14 fixes it. Perhaps on this occasion you should try removing all Apple components, reboot, then reinstall the selected build. There is more in the Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates tip.

See Getting iTunes & Windows Media Player to play nicely.

Can you post a screenshot of what you see in iTunes? Adding your iTunes media to WMP shouldn't have affected the iTunes library unless WMP reorganized the files, but even that wouldn't have made duplicates although it could potentially have made existing entries show up with an exclamation mark.

Make sure that your image file has a simple name like Screenshot.jpg. I asked because apostrophes didn't make sense, but if they are exclamation marks that at least is familiar. The duplication shouldn't have happened if you simply added some iTunes Media to WMP, however if WMP moved the files that would explain the exclamation marks.

When you restart iTunes it assumes that every file is where it is supposed to be until it has reason to find out otherwise. If they come back see Re: Locating all files with !. See also Re: Duplicate songs for advice on removing duplicates. Perhaps you tried adding you media back into iTunes when it didn't work properly?

I take it you don't have a simple backup of the library you can roll back to?

What actions did you perform? I'm pretty sure I can help you undo the damage once I understand exactly what has happened.

To backup just the database: With iTunes closed open the folder containing your library, typically C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes, select the file iTunes Library(.itl) and press Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste. You can rename the copy and/or move it into the Previous iTunes Libraries folder if you wish.

To backup the whole library: With iTunes closed select the iTunes library folder, press Ctrl+C to copy it, browse to any other location on your internal or external drives that you wish and use Ctrl+V to paste. This assumes all of the media is in is consolidated inside the media folder inside the iTunes folder. Obviously you need enough room for the duplicate copy. Updating the duplicate without simply nuking and recreating it, or dealing with overwrite requests, is hard to do by hand. Better is the process outlined in Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy. The target doesn’t have to be an external drive, but you ought to use different physical drives to get security from a drive failure.

After the update, I have the same issue. I did, however, discover one thing.

I just burned a new CD to my computer, via itunes. After that, I burned a copy of it and it worked without any issues. I tried it with several other CD's in my collection. I burned them onto my pc, then tried burning another copy. It all worked.

So currently, anything that was in iTunes, previous to the current version, will not burn.

Anything put into iTunes after the current version, will be able to burn.

What build of iTunes do you currently have installed?

iTunes 12.7.3.46 for Windows has just been released which appears to burn CDs normally.

It can be downloaded from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

I've just burned a CD at maximum speed that had a mix of AAC and MP3 source files, each of which was in my library prior to the update. It burnt without error and plays properly.

Of course you are. You need to replace the buggy version with a patched one.

iTunes 12.7.3.46 for Windows has just been released which appears to burn CDs normally.

It can be downloaded from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/. Some regional Apple sites may serve an older build.

I can again burn a CD at maximum speed with a mix of AAC and MP3 source files without error and it plays back properly.

There was a general issue burning CDs with iTunes 12.7.2.x for Windows at anything over 2x speed.

iTunes 12.7.3.46 for Windows appears to burn CDs normally at full speed and with mixed formats.

It can be downloaded from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/. Some regional sites may supply an older version.

When burning or printing use the right-click context menu on the playlist in the sidebar. File > Burn Playlist to Disc still seems to be unreliable and may attempt to burn the wrong list.
