iTunes 12.7.2 CD Burning Issues

On my Windows 10 PC that hosts my primary iTunes music collection (70000+ songs) just completed the upgrade to the latest iTunes release (shows 12.7.2.58 as the version) via the Apple Software Update process.

After completing the upgrade I attempted to burn the playlists for 4 new classical albums (all MP3 downloads) to CD-R media. The CD burning process for all 4 albums failed with the following error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred. (0x80004005)".

In each instance the albums played without issue when listening to them via iTunes (and my computer speakers).

Thinking that this may be an issue with iTunes 12.7.2 I logged on to another computer with an iTunes instance that had not been upgraded (the iTunes version on the other PC is 12.7.1.14). I copied the MP3 files for all 4 albums to that iTunes instance and then created playlists for each album. Was able to burn the playlists for all 4 albums to CD media with NO errors.

I will also note that with iTunes 12.7.2.58 I was able to burn one playlist to CD successfully but the burning process was painfully slow (4-5 times slower than normal).

Based on these results it appears to me that iTunes 12.7.2 has some significant bugs/issues relating to burning playlists to CD media.

There was a general issue burning CDs with iTunes 12.7.2.x for Windows at anything over 2x speed.

iTunes 12.7.3.46 for Windows appears to burn CDs normally at full speed and with mixed formats.

It can be downloaded from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/. Some regional sites may supply an older version.

When burning or printing use the right-click context menu on the playlist in the sidebar. File > Burn Playlist to Disc still seems to be unreliable and may attempt to burn the wrong list.

12/12 2 pm. I am on musical hold with Apple right now. Built a playlist this weekend and burned 4 copies. Today, I was listening to the playlist via iTunes at work. Was surprised when the track labeled B.B. King, Please Come Home for Christmas, was actually some rap song I never heard before. I deleted the bad song, re-downloaded B.B. When I attempted to burn the new playlist I got the same error message everyone else here has mentioned (0x80004005). Wasted about 6 disks before I looked and found this info online. Being transferred from one guy at Apple to another. Been on hold through all this typing . . .

12/13 Talked with Apple yesterday. Went back to my computer and rebooted and confirmed that all songs were downloaded. Had the same issue (among others, more to follow). Today I attempted to burn the same playlist from my work computer. All songs were downloaded locally. Burn stopped and same error message popped up about 60% of the way through. I also had similar experiences to those mentioned in other posts:

  • Received the message several time that there was too much content to fit on the disk, although the total was 78 minutes and I had burned the disk before.
  • Disks of the same playlist burned prior to the update were produced without issue.
  • When I attempted to burn other playlists to see if I got a similar error, I encountered a couple of situations in which iTunes indicated that several items on the list "could not be burned." When I looked at the details, including the items that could not be burned, the list was made up of songs that were not on the playlist.

I have a follow-up call in to Apple support this morning.

Exact same issue here. I just installed the new version 12.7.2 today on a Windows 10 PC and was still in the process of burning a massive playlist for use on my Xbox 360 (yes, still doing that as of now). Same situation as many of the others on here have mentioned. I wasted 6 perfect blank Sony CD-R discs that were part of a 50-set that I purchased from a wholesale store recently. What a complete waste of my time and money trying to figure out what I was doing wrong with trial and error before wasting 6 entire discs. Eventually I found this post and uninstalled version 12.7.2 and reinstalled 12.7.1 and picked up where I left off with no problems. I suggest anyone else do the same until iTunes fixes this nonsense glitch. They never really put a lot of effort into improving their CD burner function anyway.

Never thought of asking this until now. Does anyone else have the issue where iTunes will repeat the same set of checked songs while burning a playlist if you don't start burning the playlist from the beginning but are still burning enough songs on the playlist to burn multiple discs? I have always had this issue as long as I can remember and it drives me insane. I always have to cancel the disc burning after the 1st competed disc is ejected, uncheck the songs that were just burned, insert a new blank disc and pick up where I left off, and then repeat the same process all over again until the playlist is finished burning. iTunes only progresses the checked songs properly if I burn the playlist from beginning to end. And it's not my PC or Windows 10 because I had the same issue on my Windows 7 PC that was of a different brand with a different type of disc burner. The problem is iTunes.

Thank you for posting this. I upgraded to the new version of iTunes and have experienced the same problems myself this morning, whilst trying to put togther a festive album for a family party.

Disc burning starts fine but then gradually starts to slow down before rejecting the disc and the message " the attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occured ( 0x80004005) "

I have been having the same issue since I changed over to the updated version of iTunes. Just got off the phone with someone from Apple Support and the person told me that they have nothing about this error on their radar, nor did they even know that people were having issues with it.

At this time the support person told me I would have to un-install iTunes in a very specific order to remove all of its components and then download the 12.4.3 issue since the 12.7.1.14 version is no longer available. That was the only suggestion he had.

I suggest that we all call Apple Support and voice our concern so that maybe they will start addressing this issue. I was told that they do not monitor the support communities very much so anything posted on here may not be noticed.

Sincerely,

JHM

Thank you for using my initial posting to initiate the follow-up call to Apple Support. I had mistakenly thought that they were more active in monitoring these user forums. If something like this happens again I'll follow up directly with Apple Support after posting my discussion item to the community site.

MUCH appreciate your reaching out to them and hope that they get this bug resolved soon after their engineers take a look at things!!

See alot of people are venting frustration here. You have to remember Apple does not monitor this site. So instead of going off, call support line. Have a conversation with anyone who is there to help. If they tell you they are unfamiliar with problem they probably are. Be intelligent. Reference RogerBats original bug report, the lead comment on this board. Have details. Operating system, iTunes version, when downloaded, error message etc. If you act ***** you'll be forgotten in a hurry. People answering phones are no different than you. If you don't like this message don't respond.
