iTunes 12.7.2 CD Burning Issues

On my Windows 10 PC that hosts my primary iTunes music collection (70000+ songs) just completed the upgrade to the latest iTunes release (shows 12.7.2.58 as the version) via the Apple Software Update process.

After completing the upgrade I attempted to burn the playlists for 4 new classical albums (all MP3 downloads) to CD-R media. The CD burning process for all 4 albums failed with the following error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred. (0x80004005)".

In each instance the albums played without issue when listening to them via iTunes (and my computer speakers).

Thinking that this may be an issue with iTunes 12.7.2 I logged on to another computer with an iTunes instance that had not been upgraded (the iTunes version on the other PC is 12.7.1.14). I copied the MP3 files for all 4 albums to that iTunes instance and then created playlists for each album. Was able to burn the playlists for all 4 albums to CD media with NO errors.

I will also note that with iTunes 12.7.2.58 I was able to burn one playlist to CD successfully but the burning process was painfully slow (4-5 times slower than normal).

Based on these results it appears to me that iTunes 12.7.2 has some significant bugs/issues relating to burning playlists to CD media.

Rolling back to iTunes 12.7.1.14 may be easier than transferring your playlists into Windows Media Player.

Uninstall iTunes then download and install one of the following as appropriate:

An alternative suggestion is to limit the burn speed to something slower than you would normally use.

Reports suggest Apple are aware of the issue but there is no ETA for a new build.

Turingtest2 posted this. this helped me and my library was in tact when uninstalling then re-installing the 10/30/17 version of iTunes

There would appear to be a general issue burning from iTunes 12.7.2.x for Windows.

A workaround is to uninstall iTunes then download and install one of the following as appropriate:

To backup just the database: With iTunes closed open the folder containing your library, typically C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes, select the file iTunes Library(.itl) and press Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste. You can rename the copy and/or move it into the Previous iTunes Libraries folder if you wish.

To backup the whole library: With iTunes closed select the iTunes library folder, press Ctrl+C to copy it, browse to any other location on your internal or external drives that you wish and use Ctrl+V to paste. This assumes all of the media is in is consolidated inside the media folder inside the iTunes folder. Obviously you need enough room for the duplicate copy. Updating the duplicate without simply nuking and recreating it, or dealing with overwrite requests, is hard to do by hand. Better is the process outlined in Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy. The target doesn’t have to be an external drive, but you ought to use different physical drives to get security from a drive failure.

Thanks for the tip 'hamster104' Your suggestions worked fine for me except upon attempting to burn a multiple playlist comprised of in excess of 80mins it would only burn the first CD, then, when requested to insert the second CD the burn would not re-commence plus it got stuck inside the disc player and would not eject. A prompt surfaced on screen indicating that a burn was still in process..........although it was not. ****! I wish Apple would finally get to the core of this problem 'cause it's for the pits!

I guess that makes sense. If the software thinks the burn is not complete, it wouldn't eject the CD. You're right - this is a horrible problem. Although the supervisor I spoke with at Apple was very friendly and helpful, it is clear that they are either not taking this seriously, or they know it's bad and are trying to keep it quiet until they find a fix. Probably the latter.

I too tried to burn on 2x speed..It worked for the first cd that had 4 songs on my playlist.

Then I tried the 2nd CD from another album on my playlist. It TOTALLY burned the wrong album!!!!

I have used probably at least 10 CD's trying to burn. NOT

GOOD!

I have spent $$$$ on Itunes for my music. (I teach dance and fitness) Now I can't use it!!! I am very frustrated and angry! PLEASE APPLE FIX THIS NOW!!!!

I am NOT buying another song until it is!!!!

I might be forced to use another company until it is!!

I guess I was lucky to get someone super helpful when I called, because he directed me to a supervisor who actually found the 2X speed solution after looking at one of these threads. I always say that when you call customer support for any large company, you have about a 1 in a 100 chance of getting someone who really cares about your problem. Thank God I did this time!

Do you mean transferring your iTunes playlist to a Windows Media Player library?

Actually, You can't transfer iTunes to Windows Media Player without burning the songs onto a CD since WMP only runs MP3s. You will need an available program to strip off the protection and convert the iTunes m4p, m4b, m4a pieces to mp3s. 'Tuneclone', for example is supposed to be quite reliable..........so I've been told.

You can't transfer iTunes to Windows Media Player without burning the songs onto a CD because WMP requires MP3s.
