iPhone screen dims randomly

My iPhone X Screen dims on its own For about 10-15 minutes Then gets brighter again All on its own! I do not have auto brightness on I do not have tutone on I have no settings on that would affect the screen it’s very annoying paying $1200 for a phone and this is happening. I love Apple have every single product they make.

ANY THOUGHTS ON WHATS CAUSING THIS?

Thanks!

I also believe that this is a heat related issue. It happens to me almost every day, but it always seems to be when the phone is connected to a charger, and specifically when the phone is warm to the touch.

I agree with you. I don’t really game on mine but use Waze and Apple Maps and within 2 minutes my screen dims, 2 minutes which is ridiculous. Then there must be a manufacturing issue or quality issue if it’s over heating in less than 2-3 minutes.

This is totally unacceptable in my mind. In the past with older model iphones I did experience over heating and received the warning explaining the phone is too hot. This is not the case with the iPhone X as I do not receive the message. All other things work on the phone except the screen.

Again this exact same issue is affecting different iPhone models that do not have the same screen as the X. Like I stated how many pages ago, my wife used a 6 and her screen dims and all she is doing is reading.

This is Not a safety feature because you do not get the warning. I have seen that pop up and when that happens the phone is incredibly hot! Like left in the sun hot. When my screen dims a) there is no warning b) none of the apple techs have told me my phone is doing exactly what it is supposed to do, c) they replaced my phone because it isn’t supposed to be doing what it is doing and c) there is NO way Apple would have made a product that functions this way on purpose (ie people using the product like any normal person would and It have the result that you can’t actually see the screen). This is a design defect!

Ah. I see. Sorry about that.

The trouble is that I do want auto-brightness to work as it should, according to the level of ambient light. (ie. Dim light = dim display.)

I just don't want my display to dim when the ambient is perfectly bright daylight, which was the problem I was having in full sunshine.

For the sake of experiment I will turn both mine on and see if that makes any difference.

I have had X for less than a month and have had this dimming problem since new but was unaware of others having same issue. Having read this entire thread and all replies it seems that Apple support both at stores and on website are are being totally dismissive, as though we are stupid and don’t understand functionality of device.

My thoughts are that the issue may not related to OS but instead be related to a bad batch of hardware relating to light sensor which inputs to CPU and OS. This is just my theory but if Apple does not find a resolution fast mine is going to be returned permanently.

I just bought a new iPhone X, and I don't seem to have issues with unpredictable automatic dimming (yet?).
However, screen brightness was terrible low (really dark, like, hardly readable in summer sun).

It seems that this long thread discusses all direct iOS brightness options (Auto-Brightness on/off, True Tone on/off, Reduce White Point on/off), except one feature that apparently also affects the brightness (why????): Zoom (Settings>General>Accessibility>Zoom)

Turning the Zoom feature off did the trick for me: (auto) brightness immediately worked as it should!

Perhaps helpful for some of you.

I have the same issue. It also happens on my 10.5 iPad Pro. Have tried all the suggestions in this growing thread. It’s a real problem as both my devices are fine and readable in the sun and then they “auto, auto dim” making them barely readable in sunlight. Safe to say it is definitely not a settings issue as also noted by others and appears to be a software driven issue as it’s happening across multiple device types. It also remains despite numerous IOS updates (currently 11.4.1). Sure looks like it’s design intentional to reduce heat. What I don’t understand is why Apple isn’t acknowledging this. This is clearly costing them in terms of needless hardware replacements and customer satisfaction. Apple?

I have iPhone X and I have same issue but only when I’m outside in the sun. By default phone should be getting brighter so you can see it, instead, mine goes darker and darker and then little brighter for a second and then back to super dark to the point where you can barely see anything and it doesn’t change even if you cover the sensors with your hand. It only gets better when you bring inside the house and leave it for a bit alone. I see how people say to turn off auto brightness, but on iPhone X you don’t even have that option under display settings and when you swipe your screen down to adjust brightness there, it’s all the way up to the max, but screen is still dark and dimmed out.
