iPhone X Excessive Data Usage

I got the iPhone X exactly a week ago. Ever since, I have completely regretted it. All-in-all, the phone is amazing, and I love it... but I have never run into to many issues as I have in the past week with this phone, than I have over the past 5 years that I have owned iPhones.

The phone I had before the X was the 7... I use data once and awhile, but I never go over my data plan which is 4GB per month. The morning after I get the iPhone X, I curiously check my data usage through my cell provider, and I had used almost 1GB. Rogers had stated that I had used almost 1GB of data at 10:34am last Friday (I didn't even have my phone on me as I was in a meeting, and it was connected to WIFI). Ever since, the data usage has been insane on this phone, to the point where I have contacted Apple and they have told me to turn my data usage off so I do not go over my usage. Almost all of my apps have their data usage turned off, I have always had WIFI assist and iCloud drive turned off, as well as background app refresh. It doesn't seem to matter if I am connected to WIFI, the phone seems to still love to eat up the data. Apple has given me no answers, other than the fact that the iPhone X has enhancements that might use cellular data regardless of a wifi connection. But for these enhancements to use so much that I have to actually turn off my data is ridiculous... They haven't been able to give me a more reasonable answer. This phone has become virtually useless to me, the second I turn my cellular back on the feast of data begins. Has anyone else experienced this issue or have any answers? It's sad that this is what it's come to... Apple can't even give me an answer to an issue with their product.

I've been having this same issue. It started after the recent iOS 11 updates to my iPhone 7. Most of the usage comes from System Services under the "Apple ID Services" heading. It was hundreds of MB a day while still connected to WiFi. I have changed all the cellular settings like you, but Apple told me the same thing. They said it was a known issue and that the guys that made the software update saw it as a feature and not a bug. Their advice was to turn off cellular data but that pretty much prevents the phone from functioning as intended when off WiFi. This is frankly ridiculous that there isn't more of a solid answer from Apple. If their only answer is to upgrade my data plan then I'm ditching my iPhone.

Double check that the update didn't restore your Background App Refresh settings to WiFi + Cellular as it did for me. That was killing some data too.

I bought it about a month ago.

Same as you I have turned off everything I know. Everything using wifi and mobile data on the background, iCloud and iTunes, apps, even the one in Privacy>Analytics>Share iPhone Analytics. I only downloaded Facebook and WeChat into my iPX. I have no problem with my iP4 before. Now, a 1GB of data lasts for only 3hrs. 😕😢

I too have the same issue. I tried 3 geniuses in 2 stores, called multiple times, reset the phone in all kinds of ways, and changed my apple ID to a new one after a factory reset. None of this works. I honestly thought that new ID would do it but nope. "Apple ID Services" takes up cellular data even when wifi is ON and the phone is not doing anything. Say goodbye to 300mb of data while you sleep with all apps turned off and with wifi on. The only workaround is to have the cellular data turned off at all times. This has been happening to me for about 3 months or since the release of iOS 11. Prior to the forced update, I never had this issue. Even though I have 0 control over this (meaning, I can't turn off "Apple ID Services" like I can with apps) and paying for data I am not using, Apple obviously has bigger problems and won't even let me downgrade to iOS 10 which actually works.

First visit had me reset the phone using iTunes so that a brand new software can be installed. Then I was told to go home and observe. Hoping that the second visit won't be an utter waste of time, I had a new genius try to disable wifi assist, background app refresh, location services, iphone analytics, and icloud - only to find that they had been already disabled by me. Their next suggestion was to send my phone in for an inspection but I was also told that option rarely results in a concrete solution. Eventually, I got a new phone as the last resort. Unfortunately, that did nothing. My last attempt to fix this was to factory reset again and use a completely different apple ID. That also did not work. I am so vexed at the fact that I have to manually toggle cellular data that I switched my plan to unlimited even though there is no need. Someone cry with me.

That is crazy... ever since I starting this thread, my issue has completely disappeared and my data usage went back to normal.. mind you it took a few weeks for the issue to subside.. and I have no idea why it stopped on its own. I do still have system services eating up data on apps that I don't have on my phone and have cellular data turned off for (game centre), but it is such a small amount that it doesn't bother me anymore.. and I am sure the same thing was getting used up on my old phone but I didn't realize it since I didn't start managing my data until the spikes I had with the new phone. I thought it originally was just iPhone X users but it clearly is happening to anyone.

One thing I've noticed since upgrading to iOS11 are Photos taking up a lot of data. Since photos and videos are no longer saved locally but on the iCloud, the device was uploading them all the time. The went for videos. So in either the photo or cellular settings, I turned off photos from using cellular data and only WiFi. That has seemed to help a great deal. Like you, the system settings still eat up data for some reason even though much of my time is spent on WiFi. Another thing I've noticed, and maybe it's always been this way and since I'm watching my data I notice it now, but iMessage is eating up a lot of data when sending pics or videos. Maybe because of the iPhone X's better camera (than my SE) and the photos are in higher resolution, more data is used.

I just realized I have the same issue. Got the X three weeks ago and I’m burning through cell data. Normally use .1 per month because I’m always on WiFi. Have used 1.8 in three weeks already, and at times I’m connected to WiFi AND in the middle of the night: 12AM, 3AM, 6AM, 9AM, 12PM, etc., day after day. WIFI assist has been off.

I saw your post and checked my settings to see if I had an issue there as I'm finding cellular use higher than normal for me, regardless of all else I've done although those steps helped too, just not to the degree I'm used to. I just went into the YouTube app itself and turned off my data usage for it as well as limiting high data usage unless on WiFi. Going to be doing this for a few other apps on both of my phones. I had done this under cellular settings but as is fairly common for me, I got lax after updates to not only the phones but after updates to the apps as well. Many apps will default back to cellular after they update, so this is a nice and necessary reminder. Thank you for adding this to the post ~

Yep, same here. Spent 2 weeks with apple investigating this and their final response is that it is not unusual behavior, and that this is the way the phone was designed to work. Told them my 6s never did this, and same response. Nothing they can do because it was designed to use OBCENE amount of cell data. So now I have a 1000.00 cell phone that I cannot use for cellular.

Hello- I am having the same issue. I have had my iPhone X for 18 days. My carrier swapped out the phone and gave me a new one. I got the X due to my 6 Plus battery no longer sustaining a charge beyond 20 minutes. Now I am almost over all my data from my carrier after 17 days. I am partnering with Apple regarding this issue. However, if this continues I may seek additional recourse as I had to replace my iPhone due to Apple messing up the batteries for us older iPhone users. Now I am the proud owner of a $1,000 paper weight as I cannot turn on the data without incurring additional charges and fees.
