iMessage - messages arriving in wrong order

Hi, just realized that during conversations on iMessage the ordering is not correct. When I ask question and sb reply to it quickly, the answer is being displayed before my question in conversation. Anybody have the same issue and know any resolution ?

I contacted Apple and received following advice. Just be warned: You will lose connection and password to wifi, so be sure to be ready for that. (Although my phone found the wifi just fine after logged back in).

The order is important.

In settings, Turn off FaceTime. Turn off iMessage. Sign out of iCloud at bottom of name screen in Settings.

Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network settings.

Once have reset network. Log back into iCloud. Turn on FaceTime. Turn on iMessage.

IF this is too confusing, call Apple tech at 1-800-MYAPPLE. Had to wait awhile, but got great person that walked me through. So far, this has fixed it.

I‘m having the same problem. IOS 11.2.2. However this started to happen just recently after I got me a new IPhone. Before, when I was only using IPad I never noticed this problem. This could be just a coincidence though.

I mostly use my IPad for messaging. It‘s an IPad Air 2. So far, the messages are only messed up on the device I‘m typing them, they are in the right order on my IPhone. Really weird. My conversation partner on an IPad Air 1 is having the same issue, but also just recently.

Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Same on all counts. Just updated to iOS 11.2.5 today that is when it started. Among other things in messaging like group messaging omitting people visually but they are getting the texts. And texts being received from the incorrect contact. I set a text to my sister and she said it was labeled as coming from her house cleaner person. 😕

Just back to report that although the most recent upgrade seems to have solved this problem on my iPhone, the most recent OS upgrade (10.13.3), which was explicitly intended to fix the threading problem in Messages, has made no difference at all to the problem on my Macbook. In fact if anything, it's worse now, in that my own messages not only aren't correctly threaded into the conversation (my messages all show up below all the others), but they are also now all in reverse time order.

Hi Streetspy,

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

I see that your iMessage contacts appear out of order. Let's look into this together.

First, make sure your iPhone has been updated to the latest iOS version -- Update the iOS on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If the issue persists after updating, the following information may help isolate the issue further:

1. Does this happen with multiple iMessage conversations?

2. Do you have Date & Time set to Automatic under Settings > General > Date & Time?

3. Do you see a red exclamation mark or "Not Delivered" alert under any of the messages you send?

Cheers.

It’s not clear you understood the question. You said “I see that your iMessage contacts appear out of order.” But that’s not the issue. The problem is that messages are arriving out of order.

For example, I ask “What time is it?” You reply “7 o’clock” but the display in iMessage is:

7 o’clock

What time is it?

We see the ... display indicating a reply is being typed, but the reply appears above the question asked.

It is even hard to understand how there is a bug here honestly, there should be no sorting or rearranging anything of any sort here. You text something, it gets added to the end, something is received it gets added to the end, regardless if someone sent a message 2 days ago and you only received it today, just add the darn thing to the end Really how hard can this be?

I keep getting answers to my questions that show before I even asked the question, even if the date and time on my phone were set to October of 1950 this should make no difference at all, whenever you receive something add it to the end of the conversation, that is it. If anyone at Apple think this is working as designed I don't even know what to say.

This is not just cosmetics, you ask a question and keep waiting for an answer for hours because there is nothing after what you asked and then you realized the person already responded hours ago but it shows up somewhere above the question. I hope they get this fixed sometime this year, after they introduce some more cute Emojis.

I appreciate you sharing the tip with everyone but this is not a fix, you are simply band-aiding the symptom and not fixing the issue. The fact that updating date and time "fixes" the problem is just a confirmation of the moronic programming involved here. Nothing should be sorting these messages, to me it is inconceivable that anyone would even attempt to sort anything, like pick a reply and place it before the question because the timestamp says so. All that needs to be done is to add whatever is sent or received to the end of the conversation, this cannot possibly be that hard to implement.

I too am receiving my texts out of order. It can really make some conversations confusing as I don’t know which text theybare responding to. This all started after the last update to 11.2.1. I have an iPhone 6s, my time settijng is set to automatic. Can you guys fix this please before relationships business deals are messed up, or an international incident occurs due to untimely out of sync texts. I am willing to help test fixes if you need a guinea pig.

This is an interesting observation that indicates that this issue is most likely a coding error. Is Apple listening? It would be nice to know that someone is at least looking into this issue. I’ve been an Apple consumer for several decades now. I love their products and I have to say I’m disappointed in this kind of error in the iPhone. This is the kind of crazy programming issues I saw ion OS8 and OS9 on the Mac side.
