I appreciate you sharing the tip with everyone but this is not a fix, you are simply band-aiding the symptom and not fixing the issue. The fact that updating date and time "fixes" the problem is just a confirmation of the moronic programming involved here. Nothing should be sorting these messages, to me it is inconceivable that anyone would even attempt to sort anything, like pick a reply and place it before the question because the timestamp says so. All that needs to be done is to add whatever is sent or received to the end of the conversation, this cannot possibly be that hard to implement.

I see that your iMessage contacts appear out of order. Let's look into this together.
First, make sure your iPhone has been updated to the latest iOS version -- Update the iOS on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If the issue persists after updating, the following information may help isolate the issue further:
1. Does this happen with multiple iMessage conversations?
2. Do you have Date & Time set to Automatic under Settings > General > Date & Time?
3. Do you see a red exclamation mark or "Not Delivered" alert under any of the messages you send?
Cheers.
I too am receiving my texts out of order. It can really make some conversations confusing as I don’t know which text theybare responding to. This all started after the last update to 11.2.1. I have an iPhone 6s, my time settijng is set to automatic. Can you guys fix this please before relationships business deals are messed up, or an international incident occurs due to untimely out of sync texts. I am willing to help test fixes if you need a guinea pig.
Is there any further update from Apple on this? seems like a pretty obvious bug?
Quite frustrating and have been missing iMessages because of it.
It does seem to only happen when messages are sent very close in time to each other - then appears to alphabetically sort them... i.e. 2 messages sent at 10.24 - 1st one from me, 2nd one is reply from other person. The message that has the first letter higher in the alphabet appears first (even when it's sent second and is in answer to the first message) I have about 3 examples just from the last couple of days of this happening.
issues with the time stamp?
Same issue here with newest update. Tried all fixes posted and none resolve my issue, the texts are still out of order in 3 separate conversations (the fixes did not correct the order) and I assume more will continue. Frustrating!!!
This is an interesting observation that indicates that this issue is most likely a coding error. Is Apple listening? It would be nice to know that someone is at least looking into this issue. I’ve been an Apple consumer for several decades now. I love their products and I have to say I’m disappointed in this kind of error in the iPhone. This is the kind of crazy programming issues I saw ion OS8 and OS9 on the Mac side.
I have the exact same problem for a month now after updating to iOS. I wonder what phones you all have? I have an iPhone 6s. My sister has an iPhone 5s with the same problem. Her boyfriend has the same issue. My boyfriend with an iPhone 7 doesnt seem to have this problem.
Please Apple fix this!
I found that if I reset my iPhone 6 plus (power + home button), the conversation will go back to the correct order. The downside is that eventually conversations will return to an out of order state. Simply stated, the clocks don't match (even though they should) on the sender and receiver. iMessage is doing the correct thing by inserting the message where it belongs in order of time. Resetting my device seems to align my iPhone clock to the correct time, resulting in messages in the correct order.
Apple?
All the apparent "fixes" are temporary. I have a 6s. I just now tried to toggle the "set automatically" off, rebooted the phone and turned it back on. I don't know if this did anything. If it did, I am sure it won't last.
Same problem, iPhone 7, AT&T iOs 11.2.1
I've seen other forums that some Andoid users were having similar issues a few months ago as well so I thought maybe it was a carrier issue but reading these posts it doesn't seem to be the case. It's frustrating for sure.
Yay! I updated to the most recent security update today. I think it was dropped to users today. I’m almost afraid to say it out loud, but so far so good. I’ve had multiple conversations, with different people and this issue didn’t occur. Hallelujah! I’m hoping this isn’t one of those temporary fixes. Thanks Apple! 🏼
I'm in Sweden, on a Swedish ISP, with the same problem since a few weeks. I'll file a report to Apple.
I suppose it has nothing to do with iOS since the order is messed up in the desktop app as well. Must be a server thing?
So far it fixed it for me, but a lot of people have commented that it didn’t do anything for them. Maybe there is something (sequence of events) that has to occur to make the error start? I’m hoping they solve this soon!
No, Apple won't listen until the thread numbers start to get high indicating a problem.
Apple isn't the same company as when Job's was around. It'll be a name that will last a very long time, but slowly the culture is shifting.
This can be seen with product quality. Apple nickle and dime you while delivering subpar products.
There's no more ❤ at Apple. Employees no longer believe. ☹

Are you talking about the same Steve Jobs that fixed the iPhone antenna problem by telling owners "Just don't hold it that way?"
I posted this in another apple discussion thread, it appears to be fixing it for people.
Something that I found interesting is that my apple watch shows the iMessages in the correct order but my iPhone does not.
Following these steps worked for me, which are:
1. Turn off set automatically under date/time
2. At this point I changed the time to one minute early
3. Turn on set automatically.
4. Restart iPhone
At this point, iMessages in the past were out of order, but all future ones were coming in correctly.
Hope this helps.
