I’m sad to announce that after a few days of use 11.2.2 update didn’t fix the issue. I was hopeful that it might not come back, but alas it did. I cleared my apps and as soon as I used my Messages app again it showed up again. Apple please hear us!

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I see that your iMessage contacts appear out of order. Let's look into this together.
First, make sure your iPhone has been updated to the latest iOS version -- Update the iOS on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If the issue persists after updating, the following information may help isolate the issue further:
1. Does this happen with multiple iMessage conversations?
2. Do you have Date & Time set to Automatic under Settings > General > Date & Time?
3. Do you see a red exclamation mark or "Not Delivered" alert under any of the messages you send?
Cheers.
The same thing started happening to my husband and me a couple of weeks ago, and our daughter who has her own separate account says her phone is doing it as well. It’s very aggravating because you don’t always realize someone has responded because their message now appears above the first text.
I contacted Apple and received following advice. Just be warned: You will lose connection and password to wifi, so be sure to be ready for that. (Although my phone found the wifi just fine after logged back in).
The order is important.
In settings, Turn off FaceTime. Turn off iMessage. Sign out of iCloud at bottom of name screen in Settings.
Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network settings.
Once have reset network. Log back into iCloud. Turn on FaceTime. Turn on iMessage.
IF this is too confusing, call Apple tech at 1-800-MYAPPLE. Had to wait awhile, but got great person that walked me through. So far, this has fixed it.
Having this exact problem, it's maddening. Just to add my datapoint: I am NOT having this problem on mu iPhone 7+, possibly because I haven't updated to iOS 11. For me the problem only appears on my Macbook running OS 10.13.2. Almost 2500 people have this question on the forum now, I wish Apple would fix it.

I wish the people would post relevant comments.

How did you arrive at the number?

Even if your number was valid (it's not), 2500 is insignificant compared with the several BILLION iPhones in the world.
I did not bother to read all 10 pages, but does this only happen between two iPhones (or iOS devices) using iMessage? I'm just curious if it only applies to iOS devices or SMS (all txt capable devices).
What the ****, dude. If you'd ready through all these posts, you'd know that several people had the problem on both iPhone and Mac OS. Mine was just Mac OS. Also, when I posted that, the " I have this problem too" count on the initial post was 2,411. Bear in mind that most of the people who have this problem will not come to this specific question and check that box.

Please read more carefully. The wording is "I have this question too." Having a question does not equate to having a problem.
Even if your figure is valid, that number is insignificant compared to the billions of iPhones in the world.
There is ZERO relationship between IOS and MacOS internals.
"The wording is "I have this
question too." Having a question does not equate to having a problem."
Come on man, that's absurd. You think a couple of thousand people who were NOT having this question took the time to read through this and think "gosh that's an interesting question, although I myself do not currently have any problem like that. " that's just silly.

I have no clue how many persons thought that this question is interesting but don't have the problem. I'm not a mind-reader. Perhaps you are.
Again, even if you wish to believe what you do, 2500 is minuscule compared to the quantity of iPhones in the field.
Hello,
I am having the same problem.
My software updates are all up to date on both my MAC, and my new iPhone X.
iMessages in the wrong order happen with lots of different people, so not just one person.
Date/Time is set to automatic, 24hrs Time and time Zone London
On the iPhone it is fine - just the Mac!!!
Thanks
Jan
Sorry but this is not a fix, this is a band-aid. Messages should not be sorted by time which is exactly what is happening here, messages should be store by the order in which they are received. Until someone changes this Mickey Mouse algorithm in the code this issue is not fixed, it is simply inconceivable that a reply can show up before the question in a conversation, trying to justify that this is working as designed by denying they have an issue or simply blaming on someone or something else is just poor programing.
I have tried all of the fixes in this thread and none have solved the problem for me. It continues to happen. When I contacted apple I was told they are working on a fix which will likely come out in yet another update. In addition, my newest glitch is that occasionally I know get half notifications - phone will make a noise and screen will light up but nothing appears on the screen. Happens randomly with different contacts. I know of a few other people having this issue as well. Sigh
I can confirm the same mentioned issue of getting false buzzing notifications after applying the workaround solution for the misordered messages.
This was happening earlier too and then got fixed I believe, an seems now back.
Me too! First someone told me it was happening to them and I thought they were nuts. Now I see it suddenly happening to me as well. I am on iOS 11.2.2.
There are a number of articles on different sites suggesting everything from closing the app to a hard shut down of the phone. None seem to work for me.
This bug makes conversations really confusing!
