IMessage/Text Messages Out Of Order

It is a shame when us “iUsers” have to do these fixes ourselves.. however;

Hold the Home and on/off button together for about 10 seconds.. the screen will go off and the Apple logo will appear. Let go of the buttons. This reboots the phone and sorts the problem.

My phone was connected to my computer and text messages were coming up on there before my phone received them. It's possible it was throwing the order out of whack. I disconnected my computer and it seems to be fine.

To be fair, I also reset my phone too, so I'm not 100% positive which one did it.

Ok found a fix that may be a little different than others. Hold the sleep button on the side of the phone until you get the shut down or cancel screen. Hold your home button down until it goes back to regular screen. After I did this I went back to my messages and everything was rearranged to normal and new texts were normal.

Because the carrier sends the messages to the phone over the network. Then a setting or some other hiccup in the phone displays them improperly. All the carrier does is deliver the message to the phone. How the phone then displays the message in its software is the problem. Its obviously some sort of glitch in the iOS software.

And if you don't believe that, then the simple fact that people who use different carriers are having the same problem. I have AT&T and my wife has Verizon, and we both have experienced this same issue.

Okay. I did the "turn the set automatically off for 15 + seconds and then turn the 6S off then back on again" and if fixed the problem. However, when I did that my wife's iPad started doing the same thing (which wasn't happening previously to my fixing the problem). Now, when she did the same fix it fixed the problem on her iPad and did NOT re-introduce the problem on my 6S. So I'm happy now.

Actually, I have iPhone 7, and my phone was not rebooting with standard home button power button combo. I tried multiple times. The tip about volume down in lieu of home button worked for me, so I appreciated that tip.

This is incorrect. The carrier has nothing to do with the delivery of iMessages, other than they're providing the data conduit. iMessages are handled by Apple's servers. iMessage doesn't even require a carrier -- for example, Macs and iPads/iPod Touches without any carrier are able to send and receive iMessages.

After trying everything in this thread, turns out nothing worked. I contacted Apple support who said 11.2.2 had a fix for this. It just came out yesterday so I installed it and it appears my issue is resolved ... for now

So, interestingly enough a similar issues has been happening since 2008. I saw it in a forum at http://iphone.appleinsider.com/articles/08/01/28/apple_details_potential_fix_for _mis_ordered_iphone_sms_messages

Maybe it’ll be a good while before it’s fixed. :(

I was experiencing this problem around the time you posted this question, but I never saw it at that time and couldn't find any help from googling the issue but I took it upon myself to do a complete restore of my phone when simply turning it off and on again wasn't fixing it. The restore seemed to have fixed issue for a week or so but now it's back.

I applied the fix (iOS 11.2.2). And it worked fine for me. Keep in mind that anyone you are texting with also needs to apply the fix. Had the same issue with a few family members, had them apply the fix and all is well.

This works for a while then the issue comes back. It seems to only occur during rapid fire texts. Unfortunately, I tend to do this often. This problem/issue is very annoying and there are multiple threads on this issues. See Streetspy’s thread.

11.2.2 update did not fix it for me. After the update, everything worked fine for a few days but the problem is back today. Toggling automatic time and date setting does absolutely nothing to fix this problem. Only restarting Messages app “fixes” message ordering for some time, a day or two. Then it is back again.

The update didn’t help mine either. It seemed to for the first 2 days. Now I’m back to out of order messages. I’m ready to give up and get the new Samsung! I’ve always loved my IPhones but this is driving me nuts!! This issue and the side ways screen issue.

TECH SUPPORT HAD ME DO THE FOLLOWING AND IT FIXED MY PHONE.

1. Settings > General > Date&Time.

2. Disable "Set Automatically, choose a random time zone.

3. Open Messages app and then force quit the messages app. (Double click home button, swipe up on app)

4. Go back to Settings > General > Date&Time.

5. Enable Set automatically.
