Ever Since I updated to iOS 11.2.1 my messages do not show in correct order Ive tried restart manually setting time and 24hr time. Nothing seems to fix this issue driving me nuts constantly missing text because overlooking. They are showing as if they were received before other messages. Common Apple your killing me how can I keep speaking so highly of you when lately you've been letting me down.
iPhone 6s, iOS 11.2.1
I just got off the phone with Advanced Support from Apple and Now have mine working.
If you go into Settings > General > Date & Time > Turn off Set Automatically for about 10-15 seconds and turn it back on.
I did this and have now tested it with a new message thread as well as an exiting message thread with two people that I have had the problem with and it is now working correctly.
Because it's not, I work in telecoms and IT and I'll tell you it's not, you're probably better listening to the guy who also advised he worked for a carrier (Verizon)... If I text someone and it shows on my phone as delivered, then they send me one back and it goes above the one I sent them as a reply to my delivered message, then that is a bug in the software, just so you know
It happens when the conversation is within the same minute, which is MOST of my conversations. Super annoying because I look at the conversation and it looks like my message was the last message. Then, a minute later I'll get "??" from the person I'm in conversation with and notice that they have responded but it's ABOVE my message instead of below.
SMS or MMS messages are handled, delivered and managed by your carrier. How can that not be a carrier issue?
Same thing happens to me across multiple contacts. Seems to be the latest in a string of Apple bugs.
This doesn't fix it.
Use the support app or support page.
I am actually right now in the process of getting this escalated to the Phone Engineering team.
Just downloaded the update and everything is fixed with my messages. Go for it

This isn't a carrier issue (I don't think). It also happens on my Wi-fi only iPad Pro.
Have done the 'Turn Off Set Automatically' on both my iPhone on iOS 11.2.1 and my Macbook Pro running macOS 10.13.2. Did NOT do this on my Macbook Air (macOS 10.13.2) to use it as a control for the test. Will update with results.

This issue has been reported all over the web, twitter, reddit, etc.
It's pathetic that Apple released an update with such a glaring flaw.
It's doubly pathetic that Apple support has not bothered to respond on this well known issue.
Apple, do you care about your customers? Do you care about product quality? Seems like the answer is no.
I have been having the same issues!!! but for longer actually. It's only with one person, and when I send an imessage to them their reply will come in before whatever I sent. it's driving me crazy!! I've messaged apple and they aren't replying
I have the same issue, however it happens on both my iPhone 6S and my MacBook air iMessage app. I haven't found a solution unfortunately =\ if someone finds one please let me know it is quite frustrating
