Dropping the phone is not what this is about - the issue here is the camera glass breaking on its own by no fault of the user. Please keep it on topic as people dropping phones - we all know that can damage the phone and while it stinks that isn’t a manufacturing defect and if everyone who dropped their phone posted that here this thread would serve no purpose.

It's kind of hard for the user to prove that a crack wasn't the result of a drop. The other thing is that the sapphire doesn't necessarily crack like glass.
I have the same issue. Except mine external glass isn’t cracked. The actual camera lens (internal) has a crack on it. The only way to see this is to take a picture. I have an appointment on Monday at the Genius Bar. I’m ready for an argument with them.
Just had a similar experience to yours this morning. I woke up to my camera lens cracked! I had a few notifications go off during the night while the phone was laying on its back. There was no visible crack in the camera lens when I put it on the charger last night. I assume that the vibrations from the notifications cracked the lens but that seems crazy. I just don't have any other explanation as to how it could have happened. It seems this is a growing problem and $550 to fix it is unacceptable! At a total loss of what to do next.
I’ve had the exact same issue when I left on my trip phone lens was fine by end of week it was cracked down the middle. I’m the only one who handled my phone. Never dropped once and in a secure Kate spade case that is higher than lens level. Apple employee kept saying maybe you didn’t realize you dropped your phone! How does someone not realize that. I don’t drink or do drugs. But they insist it’s was me dropping it that caused it when I know I didn’t. They want $549 to fix. Clearly it’s a defect. They should be responsible. Most likely will be my last iPhone. They don’t want to fix anything anymore!
Same here. After investing $1500 (256/ AppleCare/case) in a phone one would think it would hold up for more than 90 days. Apple Genius looked at it and replied "you can replace it for $99 or live with it". Ummm, really?
Same problem but with iPhone XS. Absolutely gutted, walked outside between buildings at work with an otherwise empty front pocket and when I got to the other unit the camera lens was severely cracked!
Can’t understand why, unless some units are super susceptible to mild thermal shocks.. nothing else could have caused it.
My issue is NOT the dual camera's sapphire glass cover that is cracked...its the actual f2.4 lense that is cracked!
I can only see the crack if I select Portrait mode, or use the 2x zoom feature of normal photo mode.
Portrait Mode f2.4 lense (the bottom most camera under the flash)
And...Normal Photo Mode camera (the top most f1.8 camera)
This is a screenshot...not the photo. To show you all that this is NOT the sappire glass cover. That is fine.
So, how can the internal camera lens become cracked, and Apple Support tell me that its from misuse?
This expensive Phone has *never* been dropped.
Same issue here, never dropped, been in a case. Only thing I can think of is that the cold made the glass crack. Have an appointment on Monday with Apple to see what they can do.
I have the same issue ... my rear camera is cracked. I used to put my iPhone X in my pocket.. although i have a case the rear camera cracked .

I can see a few people have also had their iPhone X camera lens crack !!!! My was bought on a Thursday and instantly put into a case and had a glass screen protector fitted, by the end of the weekend my lens had a crack in it and then the next day a complete hole around the lens !!! No drops, no keys or coins in my pockets nothing.... same story from apple only complete phone replacement at a cost of $750.... obviously there is a flaw in the lens glass.... I’ve owned every iPhone since 2007 and ( touch wood ) never cracked a screen and finally to buy the panicle of iPhones only to have it break for no reason after a few days is extremely disappointing....
I had my X fall out of my pants pocket face on a cement while I was eating outside a restaurant patio.
I feared my X was a goner, but flipped it over and not a scratched or dent on my screen.
I had no screen protector or case on my phone either and nothing happen.
Not sure what is that supposed to mean. Do you work for Apple? Your iPhone fell out of your pocket and didn't break doesn't mean that won't happen to others (not mentioning in my case there was no drop or accident). We've had six iPhones so far the iPhone X is the only one having the issue.

Nobody in this user to user technical forum works for Apple. if you read the term of service when you signed up then you would no there is NO APPLE here monitoring these forums.
I’m having the same exact issue. Expensive case on the phone; never dropped it. The glass around the microphone hole of the lens has caved in. Apple wants $550 to replace the device. We deserve free replacements for this defect.
You can add one more to the list! Glass around the flash light cracked with no reasons.
Apple proposed to replace the device at £549.00! The level that Apple is getting to in the last few years is ridiculous.
