Iphone 8 plus microphone issues

The microphone on my iphone 8 plus is constantly fading in and out. I may have a perfectly fine conversation over the phone for 10 minutes or so, but in the end I always end up having to switch to the speaker because the people on the other end can’t hear me.

Anyone else experience this? What can I do?

I have the same problem. No-one I call can hear me, and when they do, it's always very faint and muffled. I don't use a cover and I have cleaned the microphones so I don't think that is the issue. I did the test with the voice memo, where the voice was clear, but it still is massively unclear on calls., The first person I contacted from Apple Support said it was a problem with the carrier (completely untrue and incredibly unhelpful) as I have made the same call with the same sim switched into another phone right after the failed call (from the same spot) and there I can be heard perfectly clearly. I have had the phone for two months (brand new) and regardless of whether I call from within a building, road, park, no-one can hear me.


Regardless of all the other uses of the phone, it is completely useless as a phone if it can't be used to make and receive calls. I have also read a number of other threads going back to Oct 2017 where other Apple users complain of the same problem - mainly iphone 8+ and 7 users. I think there is a big problem with the mic in this particular phone and Apple have instructed support to fob it off with idiotic responses like "it's your carrier" and generally deflect from the problem. They even suggested I use headphones or the speaker to make a call, which is clearly NOT a solution. I have made a genius bar appt, let's see if they say anything constructive. I have begun to hate Apple and its products because with problems like this, they are simply not worth the exorbitant prices they charge. I think the quality has drastically fallen over the last few years and Apple is not what it was and this is for certain the last iPhone I will have. I've had an iphone since 2008 and until the 6 came out, never had any issues with it. Now it's the exact opposite. (The first 8+ I got broke in less than a week and they had to replace it).

cant make calls on speaker or send voice notes.... video and all works fine, send it in Monday today they send me bil for new phone, mic can not be "cleaned" i have debris in my mic, Think its quick answer not to pay for replacement,,,,,,I asked How does it get in if water can not...…. cant give answer but other tec guy said I must bring see if he can clean it

This is happening to my new iPhone 8 Plus. I have taken it to the Genius Bar who altered the microphone settings in the accessibility menu as they said the microphone adjusted due to my case obstructing the microphone. I have also completed a SIM swap and having been through all of this with a £800 phone I am still fading in and out. What next?

I’m joining the others in this complaint. My wife just told me that a friend of hers just bought an iPhone 8 Plus and she keeps fading in and out. I have had this problem with my phone for months. I don’t see anyone saying they have solved this problem. Maybe Apple is waiting for the number of complaints to reach some critical mass before they throw some serious brain cells at it. It drives me nuts knowing that every phone call I make is causing problems for the person trying to listen on the other end. I wonder what that critical mass number is.

i have the same problem and went to the genius bar. they diagnosed a faulty bottom right microphone and gave me a replacement handset as the microphone can not be repaired. the replacement phone has exactly the same problem. looking at the scale of feedback about the same problem from different users in different countries it must be a hardware or software problem...?? if the phones do have faulty microphones and at a large scale this would be massive for apple as replacement handsets required. if its software surly and IOS update would have been sorted by now...?

I bought a IPhone 8 Plus, had this problem, Apple support online and Best Buy Geek Squad authorized Apple Repair tested phone and said it was fine. Since it’s an intermitent problem it’s what an expected. I returned the phone to Costco and ordered another (which was a big pain since they messed up the order). Now I have set up my new phone and am having the same problem. I’m not covering mic and talking right into it. I have to switch to speaker or headset. Spend $1k on a phone and then this! Apple fix this. Im about to switch to Samsung and say goodbye to Apple!!

So, we have all decided this is maddening and Apple is either stalling or avoiding this trouble symptom. How can we get this to become a public embarrassment to Apple such that they will throw together a focused engineering team to resolve this. If it is being avoided because of the high costs of replacements, then that is not acceptable. If it is being avoided because it would be a major black eye on Apples public face, then it is unacceptable. I suspect the latter. Can someone with some tech savvy or media connection please create a public outcry via social platforms with the ultimate attempt to embarrass Apple into action. On this forum alone, the complaint numbers are high enough to establish the existence of the problem. How can we garner CNET’s or MAC 9 to 5 support on exposing this? Any ideas fellow complainers?

Multiple calls to EE and Apple have not resolved this. Latest is I’ve been sent a profile to load on the phone by Apple Customer Services. This will log more data for 24 hours which will be uploaded by Apple and looked at by engineering. Very frustrating as every call, of which there have been many, results in no progress and the same questions every time.

I’m having the same mic problem with my second iPhone 8s plus in a month. it was tested by an Authorized dealer and it was told the mic works fine. No, it doesn’t. Im told by everyone that I’m fading in and out. I switch to speaker and it’s fine, but that’s not an acceptable solution. Luckily I purchase my phones from Costco with a 90 day return policy. Then I have to argue with my carrier to remove the replacevent activation fee. What a pain. I am about to try a iPhone 6 because aside from the battery problem owners I know recommend them, but I’m losing my faith in Apple.
