El Capitan 2018 001 10.11.6 Security Update caused kernel panic on reboot

I have downloaded the latest security update onto an Mid 2009 MacBook Pro.

The MacBook Pro has been regularly updated and was functioning normally until the re-boot after installation.

I managed to restore the previous version using the "Restore" function and the MacBook Pro was again working, but still showing an outstanding update available for the offending software.

In case it had been a download problem I repeated the process with 100% the same result.

I've now restored again and I am wondering how to overcome this hurdle ?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), updated to El Capitan 10.11.6

Try uninstalling the VPN program using the Developer's uninstall instructions. It is crashing. You also might consider uninstalling the Trend Micro product as a test.

Trusteer Rapport Uninstall

Jan 26, 2018 12:24 PM in response to Eric Root

Hi Eric,

I removed TrendMicro Toolbar, CleanMyMac3, resolved the now working VPN (inadvertently changed password caused crash).

I disabled the Trend Micro AntiVirus before attempting the 2nd download, but it made no difference.

I need Trusteer to gain access to a work site I visit, Client insists.

Ran the Report again - anything look out of place now ?

Thanks in advance,

John

This looks like it might be an anti-virus package. Many of the long time forum contributors do not recommend running 3rd party anti-virus, nor Mac cleaners, nor memory cleaners, as they all tend to interfere with the normal operation of macOS.

If you are still having kernel panics, please post the panic report(s)

The panic report should have "panic" in the file name.

Try running this program in your normal user account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Hi Bob,

I will retry updating again, as soon as time permits, after completely uninstalling Trend Micro, as proof of concept.

I had a look in Diagnostic Reports, couldn't find anything that said specifically "panic" but did find the report posted below.

Is this a likely culprit as there was a second (almost?) identical report after my second attempt (also included below).

Thanks for your interest and suggestions,

John

Hi again Bob,

I completely uninstalled TrendMicro Anti-Virus and repeated the Security Update - Eh Voila ! It worked without any difficulty. I guess Trend was doing it's job and preventing any Kernel access ?

Problem now solved and a relieved me.

Thanks to you and the others who have contributed to resolving this issue for me.

Have a good weekend,

John
