Early 2009 MacBook Pro failed Security Update 2018-003

My update to MacBook Pro running El Capitan 10.11.6 also failed on Security Update 2018-002 back in January. I restored my drive and did not attempt further updates until the recent release of Security Update 2018-003. This update caused my MacBook to hang during restart and never booted for over a day and a half. I am currently restoring from my back up drive.

Why is this happening? I realize that my hardware will not support Sierra or High Sierra but I would hope that security updates to El Capitan would still work.

Is there a solution or am I stuck?
