IOS 11.2.5 battery drain

I updated to IOS 11.2.5 a couple of days ago and the battery drain is immense. It went down 3% writing this!! Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix? I never had any problems with the previous software, only after updating. All settings have remained unchanged so it’s not them. I can use my phone and watch the % drain away within minutes. I have the iPhone 7. Any help would be appreciated

Hi Jinxedd,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand that since updating to iOS 11.2.5 you're having trouble with your battery draining faster than normal. I know how important it is for your device to stay charged properly, I'd like to help. First I'd recommend reviewing the information here regarding iPhone Battery and Performance

Next, you can use these steps to see how your battery is being consumed as well as Settings you can change to get the most from your battery:

Check battery usage

Go to Settings > Battery.

To see how long each app has been open and running in the background, tap User uploaded file. Under each app, you might see these usage types:

  • Background Activity means that your battery is used while apps run in the background.
  • Audio means that apps play audio while running in the background.
  • No Cell Coverage and Low Signal means that your device is searching for a signal or being used with a low signal.
  • Backup & Restore indicates that your device has been backing up to iCloud or restoring from an iCloud backup.
  • Location and Background Location means that your battery was used when tracking your device.

Adjust settings to improve battery life

While viewing your battery usage, you might get a suggestion like Enable Auto-Brightness or Adjust Display Brightness. This is because iOS determined that changing these settings could improve your battery life. You can also see the usage times since the last full charge.

I think I have fixed mine

i started having this issue as soon as I installed the 11.2.5 update this morning on my 6s. So have read this entire thread and found this post mentioning that turning off icloud Drive fixed the issue.

So I just turned iCloud Drive off, and my battery instantly stopped drawing and stayed at 10% for over 10 mins while using it.

please can people try this, and see if it works on everyone’s devices or if it’s just mine.

It's not iCloud itself - leave that on - but with iCloud enable on your device, only turn off iCloud DRIVE if you have it on. Then see if the battery drain stops. That's the test I was asking others to try this past weekend. I upgraded to 11.2.5, went nuts for 2 days and downgraded from my iCloud backup back to 11.2.2, but the drain was still happening on an iPad mini2, iPhone 5S AND iPhone 6S Plus. This was the only solution where I was able to make the battery drain stop completely.

Don’t know what I did but my battery is back to normal. I deleted YouTube and turned off iCloud. I then did a hard restart and turned iCloud back on. I had 100% this morning and as of 5:45 pm, I have 82%. Not sure if this will help everyone but it’s worth a try. I did not reload YouTube basically because I don’t use it on my phone. Good luck.

I too have had my battery draining rapidly since updating to iOS 11.2.5. My battery is also taking longer to charge due to it draining quickly. I have had my phone plugged in at work for most of the day and it still is not fully charged. I can usually charge it an an hour. I have no apps running in the background. I have turned all of them off. This is ridiculous.

Well I think that worked for me also! Ive turned off icloud drive as it was on (i have also taken out my sim card and rebooted my phone then put it back) when my phone battery was at 72%, 4 hours after and after i used my phone a few times like a quick whatsapp call, read a few emails etc my batter is now at 67%.. Im definitely happier than before thats for sure, maybe it worked as my phone is just a 5s dunno but I would give it a try people..

Depending how old your iPhone 5S is (they were discontinued in September 2016) it maybe time to get your iPhone 5S battery replaced.

The iPhone 5 models are NOT part of the reduced priced iPhone battery replacement program, so you’ll be paying the regular $79 U.S.D. cost for a new replacement battery.

iPhone and iPod Touch Li-ion batteries do NOT last as long for top battery performance due to smaller size and power capacity.

Get your iPhone 5S battery check out your “local” Apple Store or an Apple authorised service center.

Good Luck to You!

Surely this is not the point.

Apple provided an IOS update - battery life before was fine, battery life after was rubbish.

A new battery won't fix this problem. As owners of expensive iPhones, we shouldn't be scrabbling around trying to fix it.

Suggestions are always helpful, but it looks like this isn't a one-size-fits-all issue.

Apple are NOT testing their updates prior to release!

Yeah you are absolutely right! I have never used more than 500mb per month, this month though 90% of my monthly data allowance which is 1 gigabyte is gone in just 4 **** days! I've opened a thread on my net.provider's forum about that and the suggestions they gave me was "switch off data assist" but that was never the case as my phone is connected to my wifi 99% of the time. The problem must be 11.2.5.

And by the way switching "iCloud Drive" off did not improve my battery at all even though I thought it did last night..

APPLE JUST TAKE US BACK TO 11.2.2 UNTILL YOU HAVE REPAIRED THE MESS YOU'VE MADE ON 11.2.5 RIGHT NOW!

Apple has already stated that iPhones with older Li-ion batteries results in degraded performance and if the batteries are old enough, can cause freezes or slowdowns and regularly occurring shutdowns.

If you keep updating an older iPhone with an original, older degrading Li-ion battery, your older iPhone performance is only going to get worse and not better.

If you have an iPhone 5/5S 6/6S/6S Plus/7/7S, then you need to get your battery check for performance AND,if necessary, pay to get a new, replacement battery! Period!

A new battery WILL return an older iPhone to its former, normal performance state!

Cheaper to purchase a replacement battery to restore your iPhone performance than to purchase a new iPhone which, I think, Apple has been hiding from users for years.

They wanted users to purchase a new phone when their old phone was slowing down RATHER THAN restoring the phone’s former performance with a much simpler and cheaper Li-ion battery replacement.

I’m also having a problem with my battery draining quickly since this update on my iphone 6. The first day Ihad a few apps running in the background but bluetooth was turned off. I was trying to send a text message, I noticed that my battery was down to 25%, which surprised me as I’d been at home all day and barely used it. As I went to send the text message my phone just randomly shut down and wouldn’t restart until I’d recharged it. The same thing happened yesterday, but this time my phone shut down with still 34% battery and wouldn’t restart until I’d recharged it. As I’m disabled I really rely on my phone, so I hope this problem is sorted as soon as possible
