IOS 11.2.5 battery drain

I updated to IOS 11.2.5 a couple of days ago and the battery drain is immense. It went down 3% writing this!! Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix? I never had any problems with the previous software, only after updating. All settings have remained unchanged so it’s not them. I can use my phone and watch the % drain away within minutes. I have the iPhone 7. Any help would be appreciated

Hi Jinxedd,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand that since updating to iOS 11.2.5 you're having trouble with your battery draining faster than normal. I know how important it is for your device to stay charged properly, I'd like to help. First I'd recommend reviewing the information here regarding iPhone Battery and Performance

Next, you can use these steps to see how your battery is being consumed as well as Settings you can change to get the most from your battery:

Check battery usage

Go to Settings > Battery.

To see how long each app has been open and running in the background, tap User uploaded file. Under each app, you might see these usage types:

  • Background Activity means that your battery is used while apps run in the background.
  • Audio means that apps play audio while running in the background.
  • No Cell Coverage and Low Signal means that your device is searching for a signal or being used with a low signal.
  • Backup & Restore indicates that your device has been backing up to iCloud or restoring from an iCloud backup.
  • Location and Background Location means that your battery was used when tracking your device.

Adjust settings to improve battery life

While viewing your battery usage, you might get a suggestion like Enable Auto-Brightness or Adjust Display Brightness. This is because iOS determined that changing these settings could improve your battery life. You can also see the usage times since the last full charge.

bunrattyMKS,

Out of all the options that I have tried yours is the one that I noticed had the biggest impact. [for everyone's reference, it was to turn off Siri) I can't say that the battery drain has been completely reversed to how it was prior to the upgrade, but it is lasting a little longer. So I really appreciate the advice. I've seen people comment here with iPhones 7, 8 and Xs having battery drain issues because of this upgrade, and some of the even changed out their battery to no avail. So I'm going to live with it until my phone until it breaks. Because my conclusion from reading this insanely long thread is that the final solution is to move to Android. It was a good journey.

"You Can’t Downgrade from iOS 11.2.5

If you’re currently running iOS 11.2.5 on your device you’re stuck until Apple releases a new upgrade!

Apple is no longer signing off on iOS 11.2, iOS 11.2.1, and iOS 11.2.2 which means you can no longer drop back down to an older version of iOS 11 in an effort to improve your device’s performance.

Apple also stopped signing on iOS 11.1.2, iOS 11.1.1, iOS 11.1, iOS 11.0.3, iOS 11.0.2, iOS 11.0.1, iOS 11.0 or iOS 10.3.3. This is a permanent change and Apple won’t bring any of these updates back."

Really can't understand why apple wouldn't keep signing at least the latest stable update (11.2.2) just in case the 11.2.5 came out as pile of crap which it did. Wouldn't that at least avoided so many people's hunger but most and all of their customers who are starting considering android after this update and I've I heard too many these days?

I think Apple is changing into a banana..

Thanks Apple 😠

Same here on my iPhone SE and even worse on my iPad. It’s so bad that even recharging while using the iPad is not enough to keep the battery from draining fast. Normally I can use my iPad for two days without charging, and i always charge around 30%. Today the device depleted twice with an actual automatic shutdown while doing some browsing and watching YouTube videos. Apple should fix this ASAP.

When I started this reply my device was at 12%. I kept it plugged in (official wall charger) all the time, now the battery level is 9%. That is just ridiculous.

Restarting my phone seemed to work for me. Did not disable anything. Maybe some service can accidentally get stuck when booting the phone? Not sure. You can check if the problem still exist using "Settings" -> "Battery". The "time since last full battery" the "usage" and "standby" times should differ more than a only few minutes. If the difference is only a few minutes try restarting you phone once more.

A little encouraging update from my side. iPhone 8, almost new. I tried to use all of solutions provided above, at once. So these are 8 steps that made my 8 back from the "batteries-not-included" toy world:

1) reinstalled 11.2.5. via iTunes using a recovery mode;

2) set up my phone as a new device (no restore from iCloud or iTunes);

3) manually downloaded all essential apps except youtube;

4) turned off/on iMessage;

5) turned background apps refresh off;

6) turned iCloud Drive off;

7) turned Siri off (completely, all toggles in "ask Siri' section are down);

8) force restart.

Since then no battery drain at all - after a small indexing period I've got about 6 hours of active usage and more than 70 hours of standby time according to battery stats. Still got 23% of battery left. Don't know which one in particular of the above listed is the one that helped, but thank God! I have a working phone again. Thank you all guys for all your advises!

I have the same issue! Updated to 11.2.5 and battery drains over night by 13% while the phone is on airplane mode! Unbelievable! Also, battery stats shows the same time for idle and use! I never saw such stats. It only started with 11.2.5. I have an iPhone X and I’m very disappointed. This is not what you expect to get when buying the most expensive phone. Really srated to think that I need switch to Android, which is more reliable and not baggy.

Apple you are falling down!

To add a little more context, since I've commented on this thread from the beginning, is that I have two iPhone 6s'

- Personal

- Business

I've kept them both at the same version throughout the years, and both had excellent, and the same battery life (works for about 24 hours with a single charge and I use them both about the same). The moment I upgrade my personal phone to 11.2.5, is when the problems started occurring (detailed heavily in this thread). I have to charge my personal 3-4 times a day. My business phone keeps asking me to upgrade since it's still on 11.2.2, which I will not.

Same here. I had 6plus after upgrading to 10.3 the battery drain issue started. apple advised that battery is of good health no issues. I was forced to upgrade to 7plus. it was fine until i updated to 11.2.5 after update battery drain baittery drain issue started. apple support repeats the recorded message like what i heard during my 6plus days. They have to realise that they release faulty updates and the users has to suffer for that. I am felt being let down by apple. thing time to switch to android. **** with Apple.

Apple mention that the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 7 had issues with the battery and you have to make an appointment with the Apple Genius Bar to replace the battery with a new improved one. A few weeks ago, Apple ordered new improve batteries for your iPhone 6 and 7. Cost for a new battery is $75.00, but since its no fault of yours so Apple will charge you about $25.00 to put in the new battery for you at the Genius Bar. Within weeks all of the replacement batteries were gone. Apple is ordering more batteries. Make a appoinment as soon as possible with the Genius Bar because they are thousands or maybe millions of iPhone 6 and iPhone7 users that needs new replacement batteries. After December 2018 if you don't replace it then Apple will charge you the full price of $75.00 for it. Do it now and make an appointment with the Genius Bar soon.

I have exactly the same problem. I also got my iPhone 8 four months ago, and since I’ve installed iOS 11.2.5 it drains in about 7 hours.. I already checked the battery use of the apps, and even the smallest apps use a lot of energy. I try not to charge my phone throughout the whole night but only 2 hours, but at this point I have to charge it two times a day! Also my keyboard is doing weird, clicking on things I don’t touch.. Calling with Apple Support is not really helpful, because they will only say ‘Maybe you could turn on the energy saving mode’ as if I did not think about that before calling them...
