IOS 11.2.5 battery drain

I updated to IOS 11.2.5 a couple of days ago and the battery drain is immense. It went down 3% writing this!! Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix? I never had any problems with the previous software, only after updating. All settings have remained unchanged so it’s not them. I can use my phone and watch the % drain away within minutes. I have the iPhone 7. Any help would be appreciated

Hi Jinxedd,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand that since updating to iOS 11.2.5 you're having trouble with your battery draining faster than normal. I know how important it is for your device to stay charged properly, I'd like to help. First I'd recommend reviewing the information here regarding iPhone Battery and Performance

Next, you can use these steps to see how your battery is being consumed as well as Settings you can change to get the most from your battery:

Check battery usage

Go to Settings > Battery.

To see how long each app has been open and running in the background, tap User uploaded file. Under each app, you might see these usage types:

  • Background Activity means that your battery is used while apps run in the background.
  • Audio means that apps play audio while running in the background.
  • No Cell Coverage and Low Signal means that your device is searching for a signal or being used with a low signal.
  • Backup & Restore indicates that your device has been backing up to iCloud or restoring from an iCloud backup.
  • Location and Background Location means that your battery was used when tracking your device.

Adjust settings to improve battery life

While viewing your battery usage, you might get a suggestion like Enable Auto-Brightness or Adjust Display Brightness. This is because iOS determined that changing these settings could improve your battery life. You can also see the usage times since the last full charge.

bought my first iPhone (5s), very expensive in my country, I’m mad at this, how can this even be possibble?

100% charge won’t last moren Than 2 Hours at a regular use? Not even saying what happens when you play a game or use YouTube. This is outrageous. They will Fix this? I tried every fix that you post in this thread but none worked for me. Have they said something about this? What can I do?

Sorry if my english is bad

I updated my iPhone 6 to 11.2.5 just a few days ago in early Feb 2018 (i prenviously had a new battery installed about 6 months ago)

I immediately noticed it was running HOT and the battery indicator was going down so fast I could almostuse it as an egg timer! Restarts and reloads made no difference. I was having to charge maybe 3 times a day between 8am and 10pm !

AS A LONG TERM APPLE USER, I am disgusted that this bug has been out there since the launch of this software update and all APPLE can do is recite the same old CRAP about battery management for something that is clearly an actual error/problem created by them and affecting many, many users.

Let me put this in to perspective, I have NEVER had a PC (never!) and have been using and owning Apple products since 1986

I have had 7 or 8 iPhones since the very first one, I have currently, with my wife, approximately 5 iPads. We have in the house over 6 Mac laptops, I have a 27” iMac as a home server, currently my 7th, 8th or 9th+ desktop (I lose track now) I can reload them, take them apart, upgrade them (although Apple are now building in obsolescence by making their products non-upgradeable, another nail in the coffin lid)

I know Macs/Apple products really well....... so please believe me when I say “I am really really getting ****** off with Apple now” Apple, if you are reading this, check my product history with you, if your records go back that far!!!

This update should never have been released if it affects iPhone 6 phones and later..... BUT having done so, WHY has APPLE not corrected the fault, acknowledged the fault or admitted the problem, instead of just giving the same old scripted info about how to extend battery life???

APPLE YOU ARE LETTING DOWN LIFE-LONG CUSTOMERS.

SHAME ON YOU

I read ALL of the comments on this thread/topic/forum.

I then did all of the things listed here by ‘dianefromliverpool’ and also went on to turn off iCloud Drive.

After which I restarted my phone. Luckily for me, something worked and my phone is back working as normal and my phone was at 100% this morning at 9am and it is now 5:15pm and my phone is at 41% (and I have been using it)

so although I cannot say for sure if just ONE thing solved the problem, something did, so I recommend any readers to try these things and see if it works for the you.

Good luck!

...... and Apple, get a grip and look after your customers not your share-holders!!!!!

I had great battery life but have not updated my ipad air to ios 11. By accident the other day hit the update tab and there was no way to stop it. 😬 Now I have lost 14 apps, 3 I loved and the reason for not updating. With 11.2.5 my battery drains while not doing anything. I understand things are happing in the backround so went through and turned everything off.... Just did that so not sure yet on the drain or performance, however think its very unfair to not be able to use my device as I wish with the settings apple offers.

Please hear these complaints and fix it In your next patch ~ Thanks!

Your response to the issue is lame! I have not changed a thing except to update to iOS 11.0.5 from iOS 10+ Apple needs to own up to this disaster of battery drain—i used to charge my iPhone 6s+ once in a day and half—now my battery is down to 67% I’m a matter of 3.5 hours—don’t tell iPhone users to go hunting for a solution like we have nothing else better to do with our time—-own up by allowing us to revert back to iOS 10 !!!

Kidding? Not in the slightest. I have iOS 11.2.5 on 2 devices, and my battery life is excellent on both. I charge my phone overnight, and by the end of the next day my state of charge is up around 70%, unless I used the phone heavily during the day; it might dip to 60% then. Every time there has been an update in the past 10 years a few people are absolutely, positively convinced that the update killed their battery life. It did only once; 3.1.2. If you can't accept the fact that the version did not cause your battery problem you will never resolve it.

what a genius

Actually, I am. But that's besides the point. The FACT is that whatever problem you have with battery life it is not a problem with iOS 11.2.5. If it were there would be millions (I am not exaggerating) of posts about it. There are a few posts after every update claiming that the problem is the specific version. It never is. (Well, it was once, 5 years ago, and there were 13,000 posts about it in the 2 weeks before Apple fixed it). But if you live with the assumption that it is, as I said, the problem will never be resolved. Yes, it occured after you updated. But look up the "post hoc, ergo propter hoc" fallacy.

Sorry lawrence but you are wrong and your comment is not helpful to others with a problem.

I updated to 11.2.5 from 2 perfectly good and healthy devices (no way am I going to update the other devices I have!)

One was unaffected and works ok. The other (an iPhone 6 with a 6 month or so newly replaced battery) immediately began to act slow, was needing a charge at least 3 times a day a ran really hot... immediately after the update... I had changed nothing but it was terrible.

After reading these posts I made some of the suggested changes in settings and the problem went away. (Battery cool and lasting all day again)

Therefor the battery drain and heat problem was 100% an update software issue.

Maybe it only affects some phones, maybe it only affects some phones with certain settings turned on or off? But it definitely is a software issue

Unusually high battery drain is a symptom, not a problem. There are many possible causes for this symptom. In theory, as many as there are apps installed on the phone.

Sudden change in battery drain is caused by an app or apps that are using more energy than they should. It can happen at any time, but is slightly more likely after an update, because the update process interrupts apps in the middle of some activity, either foreground or background, and some apps do not recover cleanly and get stuck attempting to repeat a failed data update, essentially forever. Killing the app doesn't always resolve it, because the real problem is data that was corrupted by the interruption, and the app will continue trying to recover the corrupted data after it restarts.

MS Exchange email accounts will do this frequently, due to a bug in the Microsoft ActiveSync process which, unfortunately can never be fixed, because it would break millions (billions) of older MS Exchange clients that cannot be updated. If you have an MS Exchange account the only fix is to delete the account, restart the phone, and add it back. Or have your administrator restart the MS Exchange server (which most admins don't really want to do). If you are interested I can provide technical details on this bug, but I don't want to distract from solving the problem.

Other IMAP email accounts can exhibit a similar problem; again, the easiest solution is to delete the account, then add it back. As the email server is always the master for IMAP accounts no messages will be lost.

Accounts that sync data from a server (and this includes iCloud) can get out of sync between the server and the iPhone. Given enough time this can resolve itself (at least for iCloud), but it's easier to shut down the sync service, restart the phone, and start it up again. Yes, even for iCloud syncing. And I had to do this over the weekend when my iCloud Contacts stopped syncing correctly. It took about 14 hours for my contacts to again sync.

As many 3rd party apps sync with a server all can be suspect. That's why checking to see which apps are using the most energy in Settings/Battery is a good diagnostic step.

Lawrence,

THIS was a helpful answer. At least it gives us a general idea a step to the scenarios that would cause the symptom of battery drainage. Since going app by app seems cumbersome, even if it’s narrowed to the scope of email exchanges, in your opinion is it safe to assume that a full factory reset of the iPhone in question will prove that the issue is either

- App related (if the problem goes away)

Or

- Battery related (if the problem persists)

But in either case NOT OS related?
