how to open .png files

Product: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011), 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 133 MHZ DDR3, 2 TB SATA Disk

Operating System: MacOS High Sierra

I'm trying to grade assignments for school. My students have submitted their work as .png files. However, this is what I'm seeing on my end:

I know it's not a problem on their end because the image opens properly on my iPhone. I've tried restarting the computer, but that doesn't seem to help.

It just gives the link to download from BlackBoard, there isn't an actual image. The only reason I know it works is because i opened the file on my iPhone.

Unfortunately, it does do the same thing. I've also tried Chrome as well as Firefox.

This is a bit concerning, especially the part about Safe Mode.

Just in case, it does not hurt to try resetting the NVRAM and SMC.

Also, try running Etrecheck and post its report here.

Hi again. It's possible Blackboard is corrupting the files somehow but without access to the files there's no way to check.
