How do I know when Safe Mode is done checking? There is no 'Safe Mode' message on screen at start-up.

I have a Mac OS desktop, High-Sierra 10.13.3. When I try to start in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift at start-up, the screen changes color, but there is no message saying 'Safe Mode'. If this color change means it's in Safe Mode, how do I know when Safe Mode is done checking everything?

By the time Safe Mode presents you with a login window, it has already done its System level work, and Safe Boot appears (macOS 10.13.3 shown) in the upper right of the screen. When in Safe Boot mode, the laptop keys will not be lit.

After you sign in to your account, then you are expected to test the application behavior that drove you to boot into Safe mode in the first place — to see if there is a change from its behavior in normal boot mode. Afterward, you boot normally.
