Music stored on mac is calculated twice

i have 40GB on my Macbook.

Other than music i have very few files in the Mac. Like 1 GB Google Drive and 1 GB other files.

When i see system storage properties it is calculated twice.

Once in documents and second in iTunes.

Why?

itunes and music doubled storage Looking in "about this Mac" in storage, I can see that documents and iTunes take up very similar large storage amounts. When I went to Manage it comes up with my music folder including in the documents storage space. This makes me think that my music has doubled somehow. But looking at iTunes it says I have 49 GB of music. When I right click on music in finder and select get info it says 49 GB. Inside the music folder is my music as well as the iTunes folder. When I right click on the iTunes folder it says it is only 173 MB. I definitely don't have 53 GB of documents and I'm certain something is wrong with the music files that they show up twice. I also have all my music on an external hard drive so I can start again but I don't want to because all my playlists will be deleted. I really need help because I basically have no storage left. I read one article about keeping music on an external hard drive but I couldn't figure that out. If its possible that would be neat because I could free up so much space. Thanks in advance.

Apple Music / iTunes Storage Differs from Finder Hi Everyone- When I open Apple Music (aka iTunes) and click on the album view at the bottom of the screen it says I'm using 155GB of storage. However, when go to my Music folder and "Get info" (command i on my Mac) it says I'm using 359GB of storage, over twice as much. There are a number of sub folders in the Music folder, but the largest one is "iTunes" and it's 356GB. (The Amazon MP3 folder comes in second with 2GB.) Inside the "iTunes" folder there are a few other folders but the biggest one is "iTunes Music" at 342GB. Inside that are all the albums and music files. I checked duplicate songs (file -> library -> show duplicate items from the song tab) and there is nothing out of the ordinary there. Any ideas on why there is such a big difference between the 155GB Apple Music is reporting and the 350+ GB finder is reporting? It would be great to cut out 200GB of waste. Thanks for your help!

iTunes typically creates a copy in the iTunes Media folder when it imports in. So you probably do have two copies of it if you look. One in /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music and the other in your documents folder.

The iTunes Media folder is only 345 MB.

The categories are not mutually exclusive. The Documents category, using File Browser as you have, shows everything in your Home folder. As the Music folder is in your Home and contains the iTunes Library, it calculates the size of the iTunes Library there. The iTunes category shows you all of the music files in the Library.
