Lay answer here so you have proberbly already solved it, but I’m here to help people that come here later.

I had the EXACT same problem, but I solved it by letting the case die then charge it back up. This made it so the left one could be detected witch made me able to reset the case!

No, not all reviews are that way. And most people writing articles that some product has a problem have more than their own experience and "many" people. How many is many? 1 million? 2 million? Seems like the trades and rumor sites would have landed all over this.

Obviously a warranty replacement item cannot be returned. And your AirPods are in warranty so you didn't spend anything to get the replacement unit. The question is when did you buy the AirPods. Was it in the last 14 days?

Well, after we got the AirPods reset, they continued to have the right one sometimes not work. I chatted online with Apple about it, and they said I would have to take them to a local Genius Bar. After looking at the AirPods, it was determined that the right one would have to be replaced and, so far, they are working well. The replacement was free because they are still under warranty.

Update: the AirPods continued to malfunction so we took them to the Apple Store in Georgia (I live in the capital city of South Carolina but there is no Apple store here) and they replaced the right earbud. The problems continued and we came back to the Apple store and they replaced the case. The problems still continue with the AirPods showing being fully charged but then, later, they will not work or only one will work and show no or low charge. It has been absolutely frustrating and don't know what else to do. We have reset them, turned off Bluetooth, and all other suggestions from the Apple team, but they continue to be unreliable. I bought my wife a pair of BeatsX just so she could hear something and, so far, they have been dependable. This has been a very frustrating time and wish Apple would address what is wrong with the AirPods :'(

I have had these a little over 2 months and have had the same issue the last 2 days. Monday they worked. I put them in the case to charge and Tuesday the right pod wasn't not connecting. Red "!". I have tried resetting my network settings, Resetting the charging case (no amber light only flashing white when held) and several devices. (MacBook Air and iPhone SE and another iPhone SE)

Nothing seems to work. Next step is me taking them into the store. It seems the cases can be defective. I've heard switching the case fixing it.
