I have few documents created around 1995 with AppleWorks. I wonder if I can still open them with some other application. TextEdit refuses to do so, because the original text encoding was not UTF-8 (if I remember well, it was Mac-Latin, or something like that).

You might want to experiment with LibreOffice. I have found it to be really good at opening file in older formats.

Textedit can open plain text files in macroman encoding. Use file > open , not double click.
