is the 512Gb SSD drive worth the price

*I'm considering converting to a 27" Mac from a Win10 PC. One of the options I'm considering is an SSD drive, How much capacity does the MAC OS & other supplied programs use? Is the upgrade worth the cost? EWhat is the best additional data storage media. allowing direct access?

is there anything else to consider with this conversion? My critical applications all have MAC versions, Quicken, Office, Etc.

Dell Studio XPS-OTHER, Windows 10, Gaming display carf.

FWIW, I prefer keeping just the OS, apps, any "work in progress"

and any personal data that needs daily access on the SSD system

drive.

All is is off loaded to external drives. With USB 3, speed isn't near

the issue it once was and USB 3 is limited by the technology of

the drives in the USB 3 enclosures. You don't view every single photo

you have taken every single day nor do you watch all your movies every

single day. And in terms of music, even USB2 drives were more than

capable of streaming your music from a library there.

So, take stock of what you really need access to on a daily basis to determine

what size SSD you need and off load everything else. The vast majority of people

really don't need more than a 256 GB SSD based on the above criteria.

How much drive space is your current system using?

If for example your current music, photo, movie and doc libraries are fixed around a hundred GB and not rapidly growing, then you you could easily get by with the 256GB SSD option.

If for example your current music, photo, movie and doc libraries are in the 200 GB range and growing, then the 512GB SSD upgrade is by far the better choice.

Optionally if your having a hard time swallowing the 512GB price? Then macOS is very capable of accessing your iTunes, Pictures and Movie Libraries that are stored on an External HDD. While this option works great, it is extra work to ensure and maintain good backups of both your internal and external data.

FWIW my current Mac system is using around 280GB and personally, because my Music and Photos libraries are still growing by approximately 30 to 50GB a year, I would go for the 512GB SSD option.
