Canon MP620 vs High Sierra

Canon has just informed me that I need to buy a new printer because my model is not compatible with High Sierra - here's an email I just got from their tech support team. Note: nice of them to offer a bit of a discount on a new printer ... ahhh...no thanks!

Thank you for contacting Canon product support in regard to your PIXMA MP620 and the High Sierra operating system. I can provide information regarding the printer and this OS.

The MP620 is not compatible with the 10.13 operating system. This printer is only compatible with Windows 8.1 and earlier, or Mac OSX computers running OS 10.9 and earlier.

If you wanted to consider it, you are eligible for the Canon Upgrade Program. This is for out of warranty units which have been diagnosed to require service or are incompatible with a new or upgraded system. This program allows you the opportunity to purchase a replacement product discounted from the list price. We will also include free ground shipping with your purchase.

If you would like to take advantage of this offer, please call our Sales Department at (866) 443-8002 seven days a week, 8 AM to midnight EST. Let them know you have been working with email technical support and that the Canon Upgrade Program was offered.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Michael

Download the CUPS printer driver for the most recent OS version they support (for OS 10.9) at https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/suppo rt-inkjet-printer/mp-series/pixma-mp620?tab=drivers_downloads and reinstall the printer through System Preferences . If you plug in the USB cord during installation you can create a USB printer, then disconnect and set up a wifi version, being sure to add the connection type to the name in the dialog box that sets up the printer (I call mine 'wifi MP620' and 'USB MP620' so my print jobs aren't lost by sending to the wrong driver). I'm assuming the local wifi netwrok is still talking to the printer from before your system upgrade.

You can get the scanner to work through the "MP Navigator EX 2.0" app. The 2.0 version talks to the MP 620, but you need to get the newest release that supports OS 10.13, it is available at http://support-th.canon-asia.com/contents/TH/EN/0200328544.html . This is NOT allowing me to scan from system apps like Preview, where import from scanner is in the file menu, but I can scan (even wirelessly) through the Navigator app.

Good luck. Please indicate if these fixes work for you.

Ok, your Canon printer is unsupported, but do you have a question?

If you want to purchase a replacement, don't consider anything unless it specifically indicates it is an AirPrint printer. Conversely stated if it is not an AirPrint printer, don't buy it.

A comprehensive and periodically updated list appears here: About AirPrint - Apple Support. An AirPrint print server is among the options potentially conveying the ability to continue to keep existing, non-AirPrint printers in service. They are usually more expensive than a printer though, and economically justifiable only if you use several non-AirPrint printers or particularly expensive ones.
