Numbers - Sort and Unsort

Trying to figure out how to sort in a Numbers spreadsheet, change some data, and then be able to go back to the original order. Everything I've read had basically indicated the only way to get back to the original sort order is thru Undo, over and over again. This is not useful. I find it hard to believe there's no way to recreate the original order without making a column of numbers, which I tried to due using a formula and adding +1 for each row. (My list is 441 rows long.). When you use the formula and then change a different row, the formula becomes moot. So, the ONLY way I can figure this out it to actually type 1, 2, 3, 4,.....441 into each consecutive cell so that I can have a fixed list in the order I need, in order to change other data. This is non bueno. And makes me want Excel back. Which I can't believe I am saying. I hope I am missing something and there is an easier method. But I don't think there is... Thanks

Same problem in Excel, I think.

Have you tried the formula =ROW()-1 (assuming you have 1 header row) in the first non-Header Row? Fill (or copy-paste) that down to the bottom of the column. Select the entire column, command-c to copy, and Edit > Paste Formula Results. This "removes" the formulas. Then, to get back to the original sort order, just sort on that column. This all takes less than a minute.
