In Win10, itunes sees ipod classic, but won't sync

I have a classic ipod (160GB, software version 2.0.4) that is about five years old. I recently (within a month) bought a new laptop (Dell Alienware, Win10), and installed itunes (current version 12.3.7.46). I also successfully transferred my itunes library to the Dell. I've also done at least two syncs previously. The ipod was also working properly (with only one mysterious "freeze and restart") the whole time.

Yesterday, I plugged the ipod in, and got an itunes message saying that there was some trouble recognizing the ipod (sorry, I did not note the details). Eventually it suggested I reset it to factory default, so I did. Now, when I connect it, itunes "sees" the ipod (see attached screenshot), and the ipod screen shows "Connected", but pressing the "Sync" button in itunes does nothing.

The ipod is also recognized in Explorer, when selecting "This PC" in Windows. Both itunes and Windows show the ipod as empty (big mistake, but oh well).

I have tried restarting my laptop, starting itunes again, and re-connecting the ipod. Still, itunes (and Windows) "sees" the ipod, but pressing "Sync" does nothing.

By "factory reset", you presumably mean a Restore (using the Restore iPod button in the top right of your picture), which will have removed everything from the iPod. As a consequence, you now need to choose settings in iTunes to determine what goes back on it.

However, from your screenshot, there are a couple of things you need to do:

  1. You have Manually manage music and videos selected, which means that the Sync button will not do anything
  2. If you deselect Manually manage music and videos (remove the tick from the box) and then switch to the Settings/Music pane (you're currently on the Settings/Summary pane), you can then choose what to Sync. Either:
    1. Entire music Library, which will add all the music in your Library to the iPod
    2. Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres, which will then reveal panels for each of those headings and where you can choose which playlists, artists, albums and genres that you want on the iPod.

Then click on Sync for those changes to be implemented.
