Redownloading a digital copy

Over the last couple of years I have been buying DVD's that come with a digital copy for the movie and I have been downloading then onto either my iPad or my MacBook Pro. I have been following the directions exactly on the papers. Then I updated my laptop and now I cannot play the movies on my MacBook and when I try to put the movies on my iPad they don't show up. When I double click the movies on iTunes it says the movie cannot be found.

I wasn't sure if there was a way to get new codes or how I can prevent this from happening in the future.
