Apple 4K TV Black Screen Audio Only in Netflix

I have recently installed the 4K Apple TV. It was working fine until the latest update on January 23rd 2018.

Now Netflix videos play but the screen goes black. You can hear the audio and you can bring up the red control bar but the video is a black screen. I can navigate the menus just fine but as soon as I play any video it goes black. Itunes content works fine. I am not sure about other apps as I only use itunes and Netflix.

I have it connected to a 75" Samsung QLED 4K TV with a certified 4.4.4 SnapAV Binary HDMI 4K cable.

The latest update doesn't give you the option to pick a resolution or "match content"

I have 4 of the new 4K Apple TV's and I turned off automatic updates on the other ones and they are working fine.

Same problem, no fix. Actually had two ATV 4Ks and they both have the exact same problem. When I talked to Apple support they just referred me to the Genius Bar after blaming everything from my internet to my TV. Even though I get video to play for hours at a time without a problem. Unfortunately, even after numerous restarts there is no promise that the picture will come back. I asked the woman at Apple support if she’s heard of these issues as there are literally hundreds of people online complaining about them and she just said, well that could be anything. I explained this was a very specific problem and that all video playback works if it’s purchased from the iTunes Store, just not within apps like Netflix, Hulu, or directv now. No one seems to have any answer or fix in sight. Very disappointed in Apple. There are tons of other streaming devices that work flawlessly, so I might be ditching this and just upgrading my Xbox to the 1s.

On a side note, when you use Apple support there is an option to have them contact you, which I only assumed would save time as they would call you when an agent was available. No, the only convenience of having them call you is to save the time of having to type in their phone number. They called me and I just sat on hold for 15 minutes. I know I’m just whining at this point but I’m so frustrated with this ATV that I’m just angry at Apple in general.

Thanks, Players1xx - I'll give it a try and let ya know.

I'm also going to check the Netflix and Amazon forums - the Apple update may now require that other apps "catch up" to their recent changes.

I think if you have a product offering - like ATV4K - it should be your responsibility to ensure all the pieces are well integrated and functioning properly.

Exact same issue here with a Samsung 4K tv. Seems to have started recently (aka last update).

Right now the fix I have is to switch to a different source and back to the Apple TV source. This seems to force the tv back to the correct resolution.

I switched off the new video settings in the Apple TV (her & framerste) but thus doesn’t fix the problem (but does lessen it).

I’m glad to hear this could be a bug and not a problem that requires a repair...

Same for me.

I have to reboot the ATV4K a few times a day because of this. Same thing with Prime Video, but Apple trailers and videos works fine.

I have tried every combo of hdr and resolution there is, and also tried switching hdmi cables (using very good ones latest standard).

Some discussions about this on the web say that disabling the ATV4K from going to sleep helps, but it hasn't for me.

I had mostly seen this about sony tv's, so am glad to see it isn't just limited to that brand.

I am using latest 11.3 OS. Have had this issue with beta and non-beta tv os.

Hopefully apple can fix this soon, it is bad that i mapped a button on my harmony remote to reboot the atv.

Other discussions going on about this as well. They say having it not go to sleep helps (hasn't helped me), turning off screen saver (trying that now) and/or doing a full restore (connecting it to iTunes) helps. This only occurs for me on my Sony TV. I don't have the issue at all on my Samsung.

Like Helmet, I have now mapped a button my Harmony remote to reboot the AppleTV.

I have the exact same issue connected to a Sony TV, XBR65A1E. I’m oh HDMI-2 with Enhanced HDMI enabled.

Spent a lot of time on the phone with Netflix support answering questions. Called Apple support. No one seems to be able to nail this thing down. They all give you the impression that your the only person in the world that has that issue.

If Apple is monitoring this thread they are either stumped or Hopi g it just goes away.

Same issue!! Finally I found a thread with people experiencing the same problem.

I recently bought the Sony A1 TV and the AppleTV 4k and have had so many problems with this. After it entering sleep mode it's always problems the day after with video not starting and black screen on Netflix etc. You need to do a fresh reboot of the AppleTV to get things in to normal. For me as a Sony TV owner I've experienced this problem for several months (November 2017). It seems Samsung owners has managed to get a fix.

I have this problem with several apps (from Sweden) and not only with Netflix. I've also received the same error problem as Helmet2279 with the HDCP problem. Just a reboot will make it work.

Are there any other high end Sony TV owners out there that has this problem fixed???

Thanks!

I have the Sony A1E OLED and 64 gb Apple TV 4k (Stunning picture quality I must say). I had the same problem when the Apple TV was plugged into any HDMI port directly on the TV but I did find what appears to be a permenant solution.

I purchased a 4K Marantz AVR (NR1508), ran the Apple TV through that, then ran the Marantz to the TV via ARC, and whala, that problem disappeared. Going on close to a month now no issues. The Marantz allows 4k and Dolby Vision pass-through and has the added benefit of directly decoding the audio.
